Walk past any Korean bakery in mid-December and the window is wall-to-wall cake: strawberry-covered sponge, white cream “snow” houses, chocolate logs and cakes shaped like cartoon bears. By the evening of December 24, office workers are carrying cake boxes home on the subway, couples are queuing at hotel pastry counters, and some convenience stores are stacking cake boxes by the till.

For many Koreans, Christmas without a cake feels unfinished. This guide explains why, compares what hotel, bakery and convenience-store cakes cost last season (Christmas 2025), shows when pre-orders open, and covers how visitors can actually get one, including what happens if you try to fly home with it.

The short answer

  • A whole cake is the centerpiece of a Korean Christmas, and December is the peak cake season for bakeries and convenience stores.
  • Last season, convenience-store cakes started at ₩4,900 (mini) and CU's whole cakes were ₩28,000–29,000, while hotel signature cakes ran far higher, up to Shilla's ₩500,000 truffle cake (press reports).
  • Pre-orders opened in mid-November last year. As of October 11, the 2026 cakes haven't been announced; expect news from early to mid-November.

Why do Koreans buy a cake at Christmas?

Because Christmas in Korea is a celebration day rather than a religious family holiday for most people, and a cake is how you celebrate. December 25 is a public holiday, but for most Koreans it’s a night out: couples book restaurants, friends throw small parties, and families with kids light candles on a cake at home. The cake does the job a turkey or a roast does elsewhere.

You can see it in the numbers. Tous les Jours told Edaily in 2022 that the Christmas season used to bring in about 30% of its annual cake sales, and still sold about twice a normal month. The Plaza Hotel said its December cake sales were more than 300% of an average month. At GS25, average cake sales in November–December 2024 were 195.1% higher than the monthly average for January to October, as reported by Smart Today. And for Christmas 2025, Munhwa Ilbo reported that “super early bird” pre-order sales at Pascucci, an SPC café chain, were about eight times the year before, while Baskin-Robbins ice-cream cake pre-orders rose 197%.

Christmas as a couples' holiday

Korea marks a lot of romantic days, from White Day to the "14th of every month," and Christmas Eve has become one of the biggest. That's why local bakeries told Kyeonggi Ilbo in 2025 that most of their Christmas customers were couples in their 20s and 30s, and why December 24 pickups sold out first. Our guide to Korean couple anniversary culture explains the whole calendar.

How much do hotel Christmas cakes cost in Seoul?

Last season, Seoul’s luxury hotels sold their headline cakes for roughly ₩160,000 to ₩500,000, with simpler cakes from about ₩80,000. Hotels use their Christmas cake as a status piece, and every November the press runs a “most expensive cake” story. These are the 2025 prices as reported by the Korean press, citing the hotels.

The prices keep climbing. Shilla’s truffle cake went from ₩250,000 in 2022 to ₩300,000 in 2023, ₩400,000 in 2024 and ₩500,000 in 2025, according to Munhwa Ilbo, and Walkerhill’s top cake rose 35.7% in a year. Even the plain strawberry cakes went up: SBS Biz reported Shilla’s strawberry shortcake rising from ₩100,000 to ₩110,000 and Lotte Hotel’s premium strawberry cake from ₩105,000 to ₩115,000, in a year when wholesale strawberry prices actually fell about 15% (Herald Economy).

Hotel cakes are mostly pickup only, from the hotel’s deli or pastry shop, and the popular dates sell out. Last year Kyeonggi Ilbo reported that Shilla’s ₩500,000 cake was already fully booked for Christmas week by mid-December.

How much is a bakery or convenience-store Christmas cake?

Chain-bakery cakes mostly cost ₩30,000–40,000 and convenience-store whole cakes about ₩18,800–29,000, with app pre-order discounts on top. This is where most Koreans actually buy their cake.

🥖
Paris Baguette
Korea's biggest bakery chain. In 2025 it took pre-orders Nov 19 – Dec 19 through its apps and KakaoTalk, and its strawberry-covered "Berry Bomb" went viral and sold out widely (as reported by Twig24). In-store, stacked discounts of up to about 30% ran until Dec 25.
🎂
Tous les Jours
App-only pre-orders ran Nov 14 – Dec 22, 2025 for about 50 cakes at up to 30% off, with pickup Dec 19–25 (press reports). Sanrio cakes with Hello Kitty, Kuromi and Cinnamoroll were the kids' favorites.
🏪
Convenience stores
CU sold a Ditto blueberry cake (₩29,000) and a honey sweet-potato cake (₩28,000) in stores from Dec 22, per BGF Retail. GS25 had ₩4,900 mini cakes and app pre-orders for whole cakes from Dec 2; 7-Eleven offered up to 50% off on app pre-orders Nov 25 – Dec 10 (press reports).
☕
Cafés & neighborhood bakeries
Starbucks Korea's pre-order cakes all sold out early in 2025 (Munhwa Ilbo), and its snowman cake with Josun Deli cost ₩79,000. Independent bakeries typically charged ₩40,000–50,000 (Kyeonggi Ilbo).

The real price at a chain bakery depends on how many discounts you stack. In Paris Baguette’s 2025 in-store promotion, as reported by Hankyung, you could combine up to 8% back in Happy Points, up to 10% off with a Korean mobile carrier membership (SKT, KT or LG U+), and up to 15% off when paying ₩20,000 or more with Kakao Pay, Naver Pay or Toss Pay. Most of those need a Korean account, so visitors usually pay closer to the sticker price.

Is the cake cheaper if strawberries are cheaper?

Not really. In early December 2025, retail strawberries cost about ₩2,900 per 100 g, roughly 10% less than a year earlier (Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation data reported by Herald Economy), yet hotel and bakery cakes still went up. National statistics reported separately by Herald Economy in November 2025 showed cake prices up 4.5% and chocolate 16.3% year on year, against 2.4% overall inflation. Our Korea fruit prices guide explains why winter is strawberry season.

When do Christmas cake pre-orders open in Korea?

In 2025, Pascucci (an SPC café chain) opened its super early bird deal on November 3, Tous les Jours and Paradise Hotel started on November 14, Park Hyatt and JW Marriott Seoul on November 15, and Paris Baguette on November 19. As of October 11, 2026, we found no announcement of 2026 Christmas cakes from any major Korean hotel, bakery chain or convenience store, and Korean brands have stuck to a November reveal in recent years. So if you’ll be in Korea for Christmas, mid-November is when to start looking.

Can tourists order a Christmas cake in Korea?

Yes, and the easiest way is simply to walk in. Paris Baguette, Tous les Jours and convenience stores all sell cakes over the counter right up to December 25. You just won’t get the most popular designs on the afternoon of the 24th.

For a specific hotel cake, here’s what works:

Flying home with a cake?

Think twice. Incheon Airport limits liquid and gel foods in cabin baggage on international flights to 100 ml per container in a single 1-liter bag, and it doesn't say whether a cream cake counts. The airport tells travelers to check with their airline or its customer center (1577-2600). Cream cakes also need to stay cold, so eat it here and take home packaged sweets instead. Our guide to taking Korean food home covers what travels well.
