Jeonju sells itself on three things: a whole neighbourhood of hanok houses in the middle of the city, its bibimbap, and a food scene that people from other provinces travel for. All three are in the old walled town around Pungnammun Gate. The KTX station is not.

Jeonju Station sits on the north-eastern side of the city, at the end of a broad boulevard, and the old town is a 25-minute bus ride away. The station building itself is also a work site: an expansion that started after passenger numbers grew in the KTX era is about two-thirds done and due for completion at the end of 2027. None of this makes Jeonju hard, but it does mean your day starts with a bus, not a stroll. If you want to plan the Hanok Village itself in detail, read our Jeonju Hanok Village guide; this page covers the station, the transfer and where to eat around it.

The short answer

  • From Seoul: KTX on the Jeolla line from Yongsan or Seoul Station; former SRT trains from Suseo are now KTX too.
  • Into town: about 25 minutes by city bus (79, 101, 112, 119, 508, 536, 542, 545, 546 or 999) to the Jeondong Catholic Church stop.
  • Help on arrival: the Hanok Village is open to walk around 24 hours a day, all year; tourist information desks there keep daytime hours.
  • Must-see: Jeonju Hanok Village, Gaeksa, and Nambu Market by Pungnammun Gate.
  • Must-eat: Jeonju bibimbap and kongnamul gukbap, bean-sprout rice soup.

How long is the KTX from Seoul to Jeonju?

Check KORAIL+ for the exact time of your train; it varies with the number of stops and the Seoul station you leave from. Jeonju is on the Jeolla line, which branches off the Honam high-speed line at Iksan and runs south to Suncheon and Yeosu. Three Seoul stations have high-speed trains on this route.

The 2026 merger matters here more than on most routes. Until August 2026, Suseo trains to Jeonju were SRT and had to be booked in a separate app; now every option shows up in one KORAIL+ search, so pick whichever Seoul station is closest to your hotel.

KTX, SRT and the 2026 merger

Since 1 September 2026, the high-speed trains that ran as SRT from Suseo Station have been folded into KTX: Korail took over SR's high-speed rail business, and every high-speed train is now sold as a KTX. Book on Korail's website or in the KORAIL+ app (the old Korail Talk app, updated), which searches Seoul, Yongsan and Suseo departures together. When the merger was announced in August 2026, Korail said the old SRT app would keep selling tickets for a while, but only to non-members. Since 1 October 2026, tickets go on sale at 07:00 two months before departure. Suseo is still a separate station in Gangnam, so check which station is printed on your ticket.

How do you get from Jeonju Station to the Hanok Village?

By city bus from the stop in front of the station, about 25 minutes, or by taxi. Jeonju City’s Hanok Village website lists ten routes that run from Jeonju Station to the Jeondong Catholic Church stop on the edge of the village, and puts a taxi at roughly 6,000 to 7,000 won. The same stop is a few minutes’ walk from Nambu Market and Pungnammun Gate, so it works for the whole old town.

Two things are changing in 2026 and 2027. First, the station works: from 27 July 2026 a new rear car park and a walkway leading straight to the platforms opened, and the city says passengers with tickets can now reach the trains without going through the old concourse. Expect temporary signs and moved entrances until the expansion is finished at the end of 2027. Second, Jeonju is building a bus rapid transit corridor on Girin-daero, the road that runs past the Hanok Village, with the first 9.5 km section targeted to open by the end of 2026 and later extensions planned along Baekje-daero and Songcheon Jungang-ro. Bus numbers may change when it opens, so check Naver Map or KakaoMap on the day.

What is Jeonju known for?

Jeonju is the old provincial capital of Jeolla, the region Koreans associate with the country's best home cooking. Its two signature dishes are 전주비빔밥 Jeonju bibimbap, rice topped with seasoned vegetables and beef, and 콩나물국밥 kongnamul gukbap, a bean-sprout and rice soup eaten for breakfast or after a night out, often with a cup of 모주 moju, a warm, sweet drink made from makgeolli and spices.

Jeondong Cathedral — The red-brick Catholic church facing Gyeonggijeon is the first thing you see when you get off the bus, which makes it the natural meeting point and start of a walk. It is still a working parish, so keep quiet inside during services.

Nambu Market and Pungnammun Gate — Pungnammun is the south gate of Jeonju’s old city wall, and Nambu Market spreads out behind it. By day it is a working market with food stalls; upstairs, the 청년몰 Youth Mall fills an old floor with small shops and bars. According to a March 2026 Kyongbuk Maeil report, the night market runs on Fridays and Saturdays from 19:00 to midnight (18:00–23:00 from November to February). It has closed for the winter in some years, so check before you go. A travel guide updated in October 2026 lists the Youth Mall as open 11:00–23:00 and closed on Mondays; check that too, as stall hours vary.

Gaeksa (Pungpaejigwan) — The guesthouse where royal envoys stayed when they came to Jeonju, now standing in the middle of the downtown shopping streets. Excavations found Goryeo-period roof tiles on the site. After repairs to its west wing (2018–2021), Jeonju City reopened it to the public in May 2022. Hours at the reopening were 09:00–18:00; check tour.jeonju.go.kr before you go. The streets around it, known as Gaeksa-gil, are where young locals shop and eat.

Where do locals eat in Jeonju?

In the old town, and mostly at places that have been doing one dish for decades. The four below are all within walking distance of the bus stop at Jeondong Cathedral.

Gajok Hoegwan (17 Jeollagamyeong 5-gil) — A bibimbap restaurant opened in 1973 and now run by the third generation of the family. The rice is cooked in beef-bone broth so it stays soft, and the toppings use Jeolla-grown produce. Korea Tourism Organization’s listing, updated in October 2026, gives hours of 10:30–20:00 (last order 19:50), open all year. Order the Jeonju bibimbap or the yukhoe (raw beef) version.

Veteran Kalguksu (135 Gyeonggijeon-gil) — Started in 1977 as a snack bar opposite a girls’ school and now an institution inside the Hanok Village. The kalguksu comes in a thick broth with perilla seed, minced meat and egg, with thin, chewy noodles. A listing based on tourism-office data, updated in October 2026, gives hours of 09:00–20:00, open all year. The queue moves fast.

Jojeomrye Nammun Pisundae (39 Pungnammun 2-gil, inside Nambu Market) — The market’s best-known blood-sausage house. Order 피순대 pisundae, Jeonju-style sundae stuffed with blood and vegetables, or the sundae gukbap soup. VisitKorea’s listing, updated in August 2026, gives hours of 06:00–22:00, open all year. Not for everyone, but it is what locals eat here.

What does a day in Jeonju by KTX look like?

Last train and luggage

Book the return first, then work backwards: allow at least 25 minutes for the bus to the station, more on Friday and Saturday evenings, and extra time to find your way through a station that is still under construction. Check the last train to your Seoul station in KORAIL+; Yongsan, Seoul Station and Suseo trains are listed together. We could not find official information on coin lockers at Jeonju Station, so ask at the station information desk, or travel light.
