Ulsan is Korea’s industrial powerhouse, the home of shipyards, a car plant and a refinery belt along the coast. It is also, unexpectedly, one of the best places in the country to understand how people lived seven thousand years ago. In July 2025 a pair of rock-art sites in its western hills, carved with whales, deer and hunters, became Korea’s 17th UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The catch for train travellers is distance. KTX Ulsan Station, officially Ulsan (Tongdosa) Station, is not in Ulsan proper. It stands in Samnam-eup, a rural town in Ulju-gun on the western edge of the city; the name refers to Tongdosa, a major Buddhist temple across the border in Yangsan. That shapes the day: either stay on the west side for petroglyphs and bulgogi, or commit to a long transfer to the centre and coast.
The short answer
- Trains: KTX from Seoul Station or Suseo to Ulsan (Tongdosa). Since 1 September 2026 both are sold as KTX in one app, KORAIL+.
- Station to sights: the station is on the city's western edge. Use the buses in front of the station or a taxi; nothing on the coast is walkable.
- Must-see: the Bangucheon petroglyphs (UNESCO, 2025), Taehwagang National Garden, Daewangam Park.
- Must-eat: 언양불고기 Eonyang bulgogi, grilled a short taxi ride from the station.
How long is the KTX from Seoul to Ulsan?
Check the exact time and the number of trains in the KORAIL+ app; Busan-bound trains make different numbers of stops. We could not open Korail’s official timetable for this guide, so we have not printed minutes or train counts. Here is where to board.
🚄 Seoul departures for Ulsan (as of October 2026)
| Seoul station | Line | Travel time | Trains per day | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seoul Station | Gyeongbu high-speed line | Check KORAIL+ | Check KORAIL+ | Arrives at Ulsan (Tongdosa), west of the city |
| Suseo | Suseo high-speed line, joins the Gyeongbu line | Check KORAIL+ | Check KORAIL+ | Former SRT trains, now sold as KTX; closer from Gangnam |
| Cheongnyangni | KTX-Eum via the Jungang and Donghae lines | Check KORAIL+ | Check KORAIL+ | Arrives at Taehwagang Station, in the city; slower route |
KTX, SRT and the 2026 merger
Since 1 September 2026, the high-speed trains that ran as SRT from Suseo Station have been folded into KTX: Korail took over SR's high-speed rail business, and every high-speed train is now sold as a KTX. Book on Korail's website or in the KORAIL+ app (the old Korail Talk app, updated), which searches Seoul, Yongsan and Suseo departures together. When the merger was announced in August 2026, Korail said the old SRT app would keep selling tickets for a while, but only to non-members. Since 1 October 2026, tickets go on sale at 07:00 two months before departure. Suseo is still a separate station in Gangnam, so check which station is printed on your ticket.
The third row is worth a look if your plans are all in the city. Taehwagang Station is Ulsan’s downtown rail hub, and Ulsan City says KTX-Eum services there rose from six a day to as many as 24 on weekends from late 2025 (reported by Twig24 in January 2026). The ride from Cheongnyangni is longer, so compare times in KORAIL+ before choosing.
How do you get from Ulsan Station to the city and the coast?
By bus or taxi, and allow plenty of time. Limousine and city buses leave from the stops in front of the station for different parts of the city. Ulsan reorganised its whole city-bus network on 21 December 2024, so older blog posts often list numbers that have changed; read the destination board at the stop or search the route in Naver Map before boarding.
🚌 From Ulsan (Tongdosa) Station to the sights (as of October 2026)
| Destination | How | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Eonyang bulgogi restaurants | Taxi | Same side of the city as the station; the shortest hop of the day |
| Bangucheon petroglyphs | Taxi to the Bangudae petroglyph parking lot | Free shuttle between the sites, Wednesday to Sunday |
| Downtown and Taehwagang National Garden | Bus towards downtown, or taxi | Check the stop board; routes changed in December 2024 |
| Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Village | Bus or taxi to downtown, then taxi | On the industrial harbour in Nam-gu |
| Daewangam Park | Bus towards Dong-gu, or taxi | The far side of the city from the station |
With one day, pick a side. West: petroglyphs and bulgogi, with no long transfers. City and coast: garden, whales and Daewangam, with a long bus or taxi ride in each direction. Trying to do both usually means seeing each in a rush.
What should you see in Ulsan?
Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream — Two rock faces on a stream in Ulju-gun: Bangudae, with whales, deer and hunting scenes, and Cheonjeon-ri, with geometric patterns and later inscriptions. They were inscribed as Korea’s 17th World Heritage Site on 12 July 2025, and the two sites are 2.3 km apart. The Ulsan Petroglyph Museum between them, a wooden building shaped like a sperm whale, opened in 2008; Herald Economy reported that visitor numbers in the second half of 2025 were about 73% higher than a year earlier. From 24 April 2026 Ulsan City runs a free shuttle that loops from the Bangudae parking lot past the museum, both sites and the Ulsan Daegok Museum, eight times a day from 09:50 to 17:50, Wednesday to Sunday. One loop takes about 50 minutes.
Taehwagang National Garden — In 2019 the floodplain of the Taehwa River in central Ulsan became the country’s second national garden, after Suncheon Bay. Its signature is 십리대숲 Simni-daesup, a long riverside bamboo forest that was once due to be cleared for flood control and was saved by local campaigners. The VisitKorea listing says it is open 24 hours a day, every day. Late afternoon is a good time to walk it, before heading to the coast or back to the station.
Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Village — Until commercial whaling was banned in 1986, Jangsaengpo was Korea’s whaling port. The village recreates the old whaling town, with an old-village street, life-size whale displays and photo spots, next to the Jangsaengpo Whale Museum and a monorail. VisitKorea lists it at 09:00–18:00 on weekdays and to 20:00 at weekends, closed Mondays, with adult admission of 3,000 won.
Daewangam Park — A headland of pine forest and red-brown sea rocks in Dong-gu, with a lighthouse and the rock said to be the resting place of a Silla queen. The 303 m suspension bridge across a cove is free; the VisitKorea listing gives hours of 09:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:40, closed on the second Tuesday of each month.

Where do locals eat in Ulsan?
On the station side, the answer is Eonyang bulgogi. Eonyang and neighbouring Bongye have marketed their beef since the late 1990s, and in October 2026 Ulju-gun held the first Eonyang Hanwoo Bulgogi Festival in ten years. Eonyang style is soy-marinated Korean beef, sliced thin and grilled on a wire rack. Hours below come from VisitKorea data; check before you go.
Eonyang Jinmi Bulgogi (Jungpyeong-ro 33, Samnam-eup) — The closest of the well-known bulgogi houses to the station, in the same town. Order the house bulgogi and a bowl of doenjang stew; 육회 yukhoe, seasoned raw beef, is on the menu too. VisitKorea (updated March 2026) lists it as open every day, 11:00–21:00, closing at 20:40 on Saturdays.
Eonyang Giwajip Bulgogi (Heonnyang-gil 86, Eonyang-eup) — A restaurant of more than 40 years in a converted hanok over a century old, in Eonyang’s old town. Bulgogi is the order; finish with cold buckwheat 막국수 makguksu. Open 11:00–21:00, last order 19:50, closed on the day before and the day of Seollal and Chuseok.
Hamyangjip (Sinjeong-dong, Nam-gu) — For a downtown lunch, one of the oldest bibimbap restaurants in Korea. Maeil Shinmun reported in June 2025 that it dates from the Japanese colonial period and has been run by the same family for three to four generations. The order is yukhoe bibimbap in a brass bowl, with very little gochujang, so the vegetables and Wando seaweed come through.

What does a day in Ulsan look like?
- Plan A, west side (Wednesday to Sunday): KTX to Ulsan (Tongdosa), taxi to the Bangudae parking lot, ride the shuttle loop and walk to the rock faces. Back towards the station for a late bulgogi lunch in Eonyang or Samnam, then the train home.
- Plan B, city and coast: bus or taxi from the station to downtown and Hamyangjip for lunch, Taehwagang National Garden in the afternoon, then Jangsaengpo or Daewangam before a taxi back for an evening train.
- Plan C, downtown only: take KTX-Eum to Taehwagang Station instead and skip the cross-city transfer.
Last train and luggage
Book the last train back to Seoul first, in KORAIL+, then work backwards. From the coast or downtown, leave a generous buffer for the ride to Ulsan (Tongdosa) Station, especially at the evening rush. Check that you are going back to the right station: Ulsan (Tongdosa) for the Gyeongbu high-speed line, Taehwagang for KTX-Eum. For bags, ask the station information desk; we did not find official locker details. On fare rules, see our guide to KTX fare evasion surcharges.
