Most visitors finish with Lotte World Tower and head back toward Gangnam. Ride Line 8 four stops south instead, and you reach a neighborhood where the people queuing outside restaurants are wearing company lanyards, not carrying shopping bags.
Munjeong has one of the busiest lunch hours in Seoul. The city’s eastern district court and prosecutors’ office moved here in 2017, and a forest of “knowledge industry center” office towers grew up around them. Next door in Jangji sits Garden Five, a giant mall originally built for merchants displaced by the Cheonggyecheon stream restoration. Farther south and east is Wirye, a new town whose first residents moved in at the end of 2013.
None of the three shows up much in guidebooks. That’s exactly why prices and menus here are set for residents and office workers, not tourists. Go down to any basement food court near Munjeong Station at 11:30 on a weekday and you’ll understand how the area runs within five minutes.
The short answer
- Munjeong is four stops from Jamsil on Line 8; Jangji is five. The Songpa side of Wirye is a bus or taxi ride from Jangji Station.
- The court district is a weekday lunch area. Choose a shop after checking its current hours and opening days.
- On the old side of Munjeong, a back-alley soupy tteokbokki shop off the old Rodeo Street and a noodle house in a converted home have outlasted the redevelopment.
- Outside Jangji Station Exit 1 are pork galbi and beef tripe restaurants; nearby Okdol Hyeonok is on Michelin’s official Bib Gourmand list.
- Wirye’s central plaza has cafés and local Chinese restaurants. Check official service notices before planning to use the tram.
Where are Munjeong, Jangji and Wirye, and how do you get there?
They form the southern tip of Songpa-gu, Seoul. Take Line 8 from Jamsil toward Seongnam, and after Garak Market Station comes Munjeong, then Jangji. Just past Jangji you cross the city line into Bokjeong (Seongnam). Wirye New Town spreads out east of Jangji and Bokjeong, and its Seoul portion is the administrative neighborhood of Wirye-dong in Songpa-gu.
Which station to use
- Munjeong Station (Line 8), Exits 3 and 4 — the court complex and office towers. Step out and you're in the Munjeong Culture Valley, an open-roofed sunken plaza that runs 390 m to the Eastern District Court. Come here for the office lunch scene.
- Munjeong Station, Exit 1 — the old Munjeong Rodeo Street. Once known for fashion outlets, it's now a mix of old snack shops and neighborhood stores.
- Jangji Station (Line 8), Exit 1 — barbecue and tripe restaurants plus neighborhood cafés. Exit 4 points toward Garden Five and Songpa I-Park.
- Wirye (Songpa side) — no subway station in the middle of the neighborhood. Take a bus or taxi from Jangji or Bokjeong, or come down from Macheon or Geoyeo stations on Line 5.
Why is this area busiest at weekday lunch?
Because courts and offices arrived all at once. Munjeong-dong was once known for Munjeong Rodeo Street, a strip of fashion stores. Later, a legal complex and huge office buildings filled the land south of Munjeong Station, and when the Seoul Eastern District Court and prosecutors’ office moved in in 2017, the area’s center of gravity shifted for good. Squeezed by big suburban outlets and online shopping, Rodeo Street has lost much of its old buzz.
Three layers of neighborhood
- Munjeong (文井) — the name is said to come from a Mun-clan village and a well (jeong). According to local lore, King Injo praised the water here while fleeing to Namhansanseong Fortress during the 1636 Qing invasion.
- Garden Five — a relocation mall for merchants pushed out by the Cheonggyecheon restoration. It cost ₩1.3 trillion, sold poorly, and didn't officially open until June 2010. For years locals called it a "ghost mall." Wirye's new residents, the court complex and a department store eventually brought it back to life.
- Wirye — a new town whose first residents moved in in December 2013. It straddles three local governments (Seoul's Songpa-gu, Seongnam and Hanam), so crossing a single street can change your address.
Restaurants here revolve around the office worker’s lunch break: a straightforward meal without a long detour. For travelers, the useful clues are building names, restaurant menus and the flow of local lunch customers.
What do Munjeong office workers eat for lunch?
The basements of the big buildings around Munjeong Station Exits 3 and 4 are one enormous food hall. Knowing the building names (M-State, Terra Tower, SKV1) saves you a lot of wandering. The three places below kept appearing in office workers’ blog posts throughout 2026 as “the ones with a line.”
Illu Fusion Korean Buffet — Munjeong’s hansik buffet
Illu is in Songpa Terra Tower 2, Building B, B1, near Munjeong Station Exit 4. It follows the neighborhood hansik buffet format: pay a flat price, take a tray and choose from the day’s mains and side dishes. Check the current buffet price before paying.
Check Illu’s current hours before making it your lunch stop, especially on a weekend or public holiday.
Usagi Soba — house-made noodles in a basement arcade
Follow the underground passage from Munjeong Station Exit 3 toward M-State. Usagi Soba is in Building E, B1, with a Japanese-style frontage. Visit reviews describe house-made soba, sesame-sauce noodles and tempura, alongside tendon and unagi-don. Check the menu and Saturday hours with the shop before visiting.
Namu Jeotgarak, Munjeong — mazesoba worth the wait
Namu Jeotgarak is in M-State Building B, B1. Sit at the curved counter, mix the mazesoba, then stir rice into the remaining sauce. It appears in 2026 visit reviews as an office-lunch stop with queues. Read the current menu at the counter and check the shop’s opening days.
Surviving Munjeong's basement food halls
- Arrive before 11:30 or after 13:00. Noon to 1 p.m. is when every office empties at once.
- Check the building name and wing (A–E) first. M-State Building B and Building E have different entrances.
- Driving? Ask the shop about parking validation and any conditions before leaving the car in the building’s car park.
What do locals eat in old Munjeong’s back streets?
The Munjeong that predates the court complex survives north of the station, out of Exit 1: the Rodeo Street shopping strip and the residential lanes behind it. Businesses here grew up on neighborhood students and residents, not office expense accounts.
Golmok Tteokbokki — soupy rice cakes in old Munjeong
From Munjeong Station Exit 1, turn toward Rodeo Street and look down the side lanes for Golmok Tteokbokki. Its compact menu is soupy tteokbokki, sundae (Korean blood sausage) and fried dumplings. The sweet, peppery broth is the draw; regulars dip the dumplings into it.
Visit reviews describe a shop with long-time neighborhood regulars. Check the current menu and opening hours before leaving, and ask whether ingredients have sold out. Use public transport if you want to avoid looking for parking.
Neutinamu Kalguksu Shabu-Shabu — a converted house behind the community center
Behind the Munjeong 1-dong Community Service Center, a converted house beside the large zelkova trees contains Neutinamu Kalguksu Shabu-Shabu. Look for perilla kalguksu, sujebi, noodles with dumplings and beef-and-mushroom shabu-shabu. Use the address 3-7 Dongnam-ro 6-gil in a journey planner; contact the restaurant about prices and Saturday or evening service.
Where do locals eat near Jangji Station and Garden Five?
The streets by Jangji Station Exit 1 offer pork galbi and beef tripe restaurants. They give you an alternative to the chain restaurants inside Garden Five.
Suwonjip — charcoal-grilled pork galbi
Suwonjip is at 108 Songpa-daero, near Jangji Station Exit 1. The focus is marinated pork galbi grilled over charcoal; naengmyeon and beef soup with rice are alternatives mentioned by visitors. Before ordering, ask for the current galbi price, serving weight and minimum order rather than treating a platter price as a price per person.
Jangjigol Yang-Gopchang, Main Branch — beef tripe and gopchang
Jangjigol Yang-Gopchang is at 106-16 Songpa-daero, just past the junction by Suwonjip. It specializes in beef gopchang (small intestine) and yang (tripe). Visit reviews mention a self-serve soup bar. Ask the restaurant about today’s cuts, portion sizes, prices and opening days.
Okdol Hyeonok — Michelin Bib Gourmand naengmyeon
Okdol Hyeonok is on the ground floor of Songpa I-Park, Zone D, at 55 Beobwon-ro. Michelin’s official current Bib Gourmand list includes it, and the guide’s 2025 Bib Gourmand announcement also introduces the restaurant. The official description highlights pure-buckwheat Pyongyang naengmyeon, tofu-rich dumplings and eobok jaengban (a brass-platter beef hot pot). Check the current menu for prices.
Michelin’s restaurant page lists daily hours of 11:00–21:30 (checked 2026-11). It does not settle the conflicting break times, so contact the restaurant for the break, last order and waiting arrangements before visiting.
Where to eat on the Songpa side of Wirye?
Honestly, Wirye is too young to have old-timer restaurants. The first residents arrived in December 2013, so even the oldest shops are only about a decade old. The ground floors of the apartment arcades lean heavily toward chains, which makes the independent places residents actually recommend stand out all the more.
The invisible line through Wirye's central plaza
- Wiryegwangjang-ro, where the tram tracks run, is Wirye's main street. The Songpa-gu district is literally named Wirye-dong, and its community center sits on this road (210 Wiryegwangjang-ro).
- The Wirye Central Prugio Complex 2 shopping arcade (290 Wiryegwangjang-ro) on the north side of the central plaza has a Seoul, Songpa-gu address. Wirye Central Tower (300 Wiryegwangjang-ro) across the plaza is in Sujeong-gu, Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. One plaza, two provinces.
- Wirye tram line — Seoul’s 2026-02-27 notice describes a 5.4 km, 12-stop project from Macheon to Bokjeong and Namwirye, with testing in progress at that time. Check a current official service notice before including a tram ride in your itinerary.
Seolhyang — yuni jajang on the central plaza
Seolhyang is a neighborhood Chinese restaurant on the ground floor of the Prugio Complex 2 arcade, 290 Wiryegwangjang-ro. Yuni jajang (black-bean noodles with finely minced toppings), white jjamppong and pork sweet-and-sour dishes appear in local visit reviews. Check the current menu, closing time and regular day off directly before visiting.
Suhyang Kalguksu, Geoyeo Main — noodles in old Geoyeo
Suhyang Kalguksu’s Geoyeo main branch is outside Wirye New Town, in old Geoyeo-dong at 20 Geoma-ro, 2nd floor. Use Geoyeo Station Exit 3 as the subway starting point and check the walking route to the address. Visit reviews mention seafood kalguksu, mung bean pancake, boiled pork and hand-made dumplings; the pancakes and pork can make it more than a noodle stop. Ask the restaurant for its current menu, prices and hours.
Which cafés in Munjeong, Jangji and Wirye are worth it?
In an office district, cafés split cleanly into cheap, fast takeaway and neighborhood places to linger. The area in front of Munjeong Station is the former; Jangji’s residential streets and Wirye are the latter. If you’re walking toward Garak Market looking for a salt-bread bakery, see the one we covered in our Garak Market guide.
Brown Chip — coffee and cakes in Jangji
Brown Chip is on the ground floor of the AKOM Building, 108 Saemal-ro, in Jangji’s residential streets. Visit reviews describe a roastery with coffee, cakes and baked goods where residents and people with laptops spend time. Check its current menu and opening days before making a special trip.
K&K Roastery Café — a bean shop across from the court
K&K Roastery Café is on the ground floor at 17 Beobwon-ro 4-gil, opposite the Seoul Eastern District Court. Visitors describe a bean-aroma corner and a kiosk offering nutty or brighter coffee profiles. It is a useful stop for coffee beans as a souvenir. Read the current menu and check opening days with the café.
Peak Coffee Roasters — choose your coffee profile
Peak Coffee Roasters is on the ground floor of Songpa Terra Tower 2 near Munjeong Station Exit 4. Visit reviews describe on-site roasting and a choice of nutty, brighter or decaf coffee. Read the café’s current menu and check its hours before planning a stop.
Flat Door — croissant sandwiches in Wirye
Flat Door is in Building 1 of the arcade at 230 Wiryegwangjang-ro, opposite Wiryebyeol Elementary School. The cobalt-blue exterior, British-style objects and croissant sandwiches are its distinguishing features. Check current hours and days off directly before choosing it for breakfast.
MODAN Bakery — bread beside the tram tracks
MODAN Bakery is on the ground floor of Wirye I-Park arcade Building C, 136 Wiryegwangjang-ro. October 2026 visit coverage describes baton-style bread and a signature latte. Choose from the day’s display and check current prices and opening days with the bakery before visiting.
