The name on your boarding pass is misleading. Gimpo International Airport is not in Gimpo; its terminals stand in Seoul’s Gangseo-gu. The land was part of Gimpo County until 1963, when it was handed to Seoul and the airport kept the old name. The real Gimpo starts a few kilometres northwest, a long wedge of rice fields, new apartment towns and military fences between the Han River and the strait facing Ganghwa Island.
At its northern tip the Han meets the Imjin and flows out to the Yellow Sea, and the far bank is North Korea. From the observatory at Aegibong, Gaepung County is 1.4 km away. Most visitors who come for that view never see the rest: a Joseon fortress that fought French troops in 1866, a UNESCO-listed royal tomb behind City Hall, and a working fishing port that sells fish you rarely find in Seoul.
The short answer
- Where: northwest of Seoul, on the south bank of the Han River estuary. AREX, Line 5 or Line 9 to Gimpo Airport, then the Gimpo Goldline into the city.
- Best for: seeing North Korea without a tour, a fortress hike with sea views, and seasonal seafood. Plan a full day; the sights are spread out.
- Must-see: Aegibong Peace Ecopark — book an entry slot online and bring your passport.
- Must-eat: whatever is in season at Daemyeong Port, North Korean-style dumplings at Rakwon, and rice red-bean bread from Chef Boulanger, a bakery Gyeonggi Tourism lists among the province's old-timers.
Is Gimpo Airport actually in Gimpo?
No — it is in Seoul, and has been since 1963. On January 1, 1963, Gimpo County’s Yangdong-myeon and Yangseo-myeon were transferred to Seoul’s Yeongdeungpo-gu, along with two villages from neighbouring Bucheon County. That area is now Gangseo-gu and Yangcheon-gu, and the domestic and international terminals sit at Haneul-gil 112 and 38 in Gangseo-gu. Parts of the airfield spill into Gyeyang-gu in Incheon and Gogang-dong in Bucheon, but none of it lies in Gimpo City.
Gimpo in six dates
- 1694 — Munsusanseong fortress is built on Munsusan to guard the Ganghwa strait.
- 1866 — French troops fight Joseon defenders at the fortress during the 병인양요 Byeongin Yangyo, the French campaign against Korea.
- 1963 — the airport area moves from Gimpo County to Seoul.
- 1998 — Gimpo County becomes Gimpo City (April 1, marked each year by Citizens' Day).
- 2019 — the driverless Gimpo Goldline opens, linking the new towns to Gimpo Airport Station.
- 2021 — the 1978 Aegibong observatory reopens, rebuilt as Aegibong Peace Ecopark.
If you are staying near the airport for an early flight, our Gimpo Airport hotels guide covers the Seoul side.
How do you get to Gimpo from Seoul?
By rail to Gimpo Airport Station, then the Gimpo Goldline. Gimpo Airport is a hub for AREX, Line 5, Line 9 and the Seohae Line. The Goldline continues 23.6 km northwest through Gimpo’s new towns to Yangchon. For Aegibong, Munsusan and Daemyeong Port you still need a bus, taxi or car from a Goldline station.
🚇 Seoul to Gimpo by public transport (operator timetables and Gimpo City / park pages, Oct 2026)
| Leg | Line / bus | Approx. time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Seoul → Gimpo Airport Station | AREX from Seoul Station or Hongik Univ.; Line 5; Line 9 | 15–25 min | Follow signs for the Gimpo Goldline |
| Gimpo Airport → Unyang or Gurae | Gimpo Goldline | About 20 / 30 min | Two-car driverless trains, every 3 min at peak |
| Sau, Unyang or Gurae → Aegibong | Bus 7 (Sau, Unyang); weekends also 3-2 (Unyang), 7-2 (Gurae) | Varies | Get off at Aegibong entrance; park shuttle from the ticket office |
| Gimpo Airport → Jangneung | Goldline to Sau (Gimpo City Hall) | 10–15 min, then walk | The tomb is just behind City Hall |
| Seoul → Munsusan | Ganghwa-bound intercity buses via Gimpo | Varies | Gimpo City lists stops at Seongdong checkpoint and Gimpo College |
The Goldline is the weak link: two-car trains that Money Today reported running at around 180% of capacity at rush hour in 2026. Travel against the commute — into Gimpo in the morning, back before 18:00 or after 19:30. A Line 5 extension passed its feasibility review in March 2026 (Herald Corporation), but it is years away.
What is Gimpo known for?
The border, the estuary and rice. Gimpo is home to the Marine Corps 2nd Division, and the fences you see along the river are real. The Han River estuary here is a neutral zone; on the far bank is North Korea’s Gaepung County. Inland, the flat Gimpo plain is rice country, even as the apartment blocks of Gimpo Hangang New Town spread across it.
The new town has its own landmark: 라베니체 La Veniche, a Venice-themed canal lined with cafés and restaurants in the Janggi-dong area, which held a concert-and-fireworks festival on October 17, 2026. It is pleasant after dark, but it is not the reason to come.
What should you see in Gimpo?
Aegibong Peace Ecopark — Aegibong is a 154 m hill that saw fierce fighting in the Korean War; a Marine Corps memorial stands in the park. The name comes from a 17th-century story about a woman named Aegi who climbed it every day to look north for a lover taken away by Qing troops; President Park Chung-hee wrote the name in calligraphy for the hill in 1966. The 1978 observatory was torn down and replaced by a park designed by architect Seung H-Sang. A shuttle runs from the ticket office to the exhibition hall, and a trail with a 112 m swaying bridge leads up to the Jogang Observatory, where North Korea’s Gaepung County is 1.4 km across the water. The on-site Starbucks drew 120,000 visitors in its first seven months, Hankyung reported in July 2025. Allow about two hours.
Munsusanseong and Munsusan — Built in 1694 under King Sukjong, the fortress faced Gapgotjin on Ganghwa Island across the narrow Yeomha channel. In 1866 French troops landed and fought here; the seaward walls and gate towers were destroyed. Of roughly 6 km of wall, about 4 km survives along the ridge, with the south and north gates rebuilt. Trails start at the Munsusan forest bathing area; from the 376 m summit you can see Songaksan in Kaesong on a clear day. Peace Nuri-gil course 2 links the south gate to the Aegibong entrance in 8 km (about 3 hours 20 minutes, Gimpo City says).
Gimpo Jangneung — The tomb of Wonjong and Queen Inheon, the parents of King Injo. Wonjong never reigned; his son moved the grave here in 1627 and made him king posthumously in 1632. It is one of the UNESCO-listed Joseon royal tombs, and it sits right behind Gimpo City Hall.
Daemyeong Port and Gimpo Warship Park — Gimpo’s fishing port faces Ganghwa Island across the Yeomha channel. Its fish market moved into a new building in March 2026, with 42 seafood stalls, 31 salted-seafood and dried-fish shops and 440 free parking spaces. Next door, the free Warship Park displays the Unbong (LST-671), a landing ship launched for the US Navy in 1944 that served at Okinawa and in the Korean Navy until 2006. On November 7, 2026, a Marine Corps festival here adds a sunset food market on the fish-market roof.
La Veniche — The canal streets of the new town in Janggi-dong. Come at dusk for the lights. For shopping, Hyundai Premium Outlet Gimpo is in Gochon-eup on the Ara Waterway, close to Gimpo Airport.

Where do locals eat in Gimpo?
Gimpo’s food draw is the port, plus a handful of neighbourhood places people drive across the city for. All of these had visitor reviews on Naver in October 2026; prices are quoted from those posts.
Daemyeong Port fish market — A producers’ market where much of the catch comes in on local boats. Besides flatfish and rockfish, look for river-mouth fish such as 웅어 ungeo (grenadier anchovy) and 준치 junchi (Chinese herring), sliced bones-in and hard to find at Noryangjin. Buy live fish and have it cut as sashimi, or pick up blue crab, shrimp and salted seafood next door. Stay for sunset. For the autumn catch, see our guide to Korean autumn seafood.
Chef Boulanger (Sau-dong) — Gyeonggi Tourism Organization included this bakery in its January 2026 list of the province’s old-timers. Owner Lee Byung-jae trained at Lee Sung Dang in Gunsan and Coa Yanggwa in Masan, opened in Seoul in 1989 and moved to Sau-dong in 2002; his two sons now bake with him. The shop opens at 08:00. Best sellers: rice red-bean bread, the pecan-covered “Alligator” and carrot pound cake with cream cheese. A larger café branch sits by Modam Park in Unyang-dong.
Rakwon Ibuk Mandu (Janggi-dong) — Ibuk means “north of the border”: large, mild northern-style dumplings. October 2026 reviewers paid 14,000 won for rice-cake dumpling soup and 15,000 won for a bibim-guksu and dumpling set; many locals just take grilled dumplings home. It is in Janggi-dong, like La Veniche.
Gangwon Makguksu (Gochon-eup, Jeonho-ro 68) — Gangwon-style buckwheat noodles, in cold broth or with chili sauce, plus boiled pork. An October 2026 review listed mul-makguksu at 11,000 won and suyuk at 20,000 won. Weekend lunch means a wait. Gochon is one stop from Gimpo Airport — the easy meal before a flight.
Hansung Chicken (Yangchon-eup) — The chicken Gimpo people bring up first: fried, sauced or half-and-half, with a thin, crisp coating. Dine-in is weekdays only; weekends are takeaway, and there is usually a wait. Combine it with Daemyeong Port if you are driving.
Ttukbang Guksu (Geolpo-dong) — A plain noodle shop by the stream embankment (ttukbang). The bibim-guksu sauce — cooled broth, smoked chili powder and grated fruit, aged for a week — is spicy, sweet and deep. Janchi-guksu and dumplings round out the menu. Geolpo-dong is next to Jangneung, so the two pair well.

What does a one-day Gimpo route look like?
- Before you go: book an Aegibong entry slot (late morning works well) on the park website and pack your passport.
- 08:30 — Gimpo Airport Station. Change to the Goldline and ride to Unyang (about 20 minutes), going against the rush-hour flow.
- Morning — Aegibong. Bus 7 to the Aegibong entrance, shuttle up, and allow about two hours for the exhibition hall, trail and observatory.
- Afternoon — Munsusan or the port. By taxi, either walk a stretch of the Munsusanseong wall or head south to Daemyeong Port and the Warship Park (last entry 17:00 from September to April).
- Sunset — Daemyeong Port. Pick out seafood at the market and watch the light go down over the Yeomha channel.
- Evening — La Veniche. Back to Janggi Station, dumplings at Rakwon, a walk along the canal, then the Goldline to Gimpo Airport.
Practical tip
- Mondays: Aegibong is open, but Jangneung and the Warship Park are closed.
- At Aegibong: arriving more than 30 minutes after your slot counts as a no-show, payment is card only, and the over-65 free entry applies to Korean nationals only. Do not photograph military posts anywhere along the river.
- Driving helps. Aegibong, Munsusan, Daemyeong Port and Hansung Chicken are far from the Goldline. A rental car from Gimpo Airport makes the loop easy — see our guide to renting a car in Korea.
- Seasons: spring for jukkumi and cherry blossoms along Gyeyangcheon stream (the 2026 festival was April 11–12); autumn for shrimp, gizzard shad and crab, and the clearest views across the estuary.
