The short answer

  • Autumn's three star seafoods are jeoneo (gizzard shad), daeha (fleshy prawn) and kkotge (blue crab). Their legal closed seasons end in summer, which is why they all arrive together.
  • Blue crab fishing is closed nationwide from 21 June to 20 August; daeha from 1 May to 30 June; jeoneo from 1 May to 15 July (Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries rules, 2026).
  • Hongseong's Namdang Port Daeha Festival runs until 8 November 2026, according to Hongseong County.

Korea has a spring seafood season and a winter one, but autumn is the one people plan trips around.

From late August the Yellow Sea ports start landing three things at once: the small, oily 전어 (jeoneo, gizzard shad), the big 대하 (daeha, fleshy prawn) and the 꽃게 (kkotge, swimming blue crab). Seafood restaurants hang banners with all three names, coastal towns hold festivals, and Seoul’s fish markets fill with crab. This guide is about those three specifically: when and why they are in season, how to tell the good stuff from the substitutes, what they cost in 2026 and how to eat them without leaving Seoul. For the wider autumn table, from new rice to persimmons, see our Chuseok and autumn seasonal food guide; for raw fish generally, our Seoul sashimi guide.

Why do jeoneo, daeha and kkotge all peak in autumn?

Because each one has a legal closed season during spawning that ends in summer, and because by autumn all three have spent the warm months feeding.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries sets closed seasons under the Fishery Resources Management Act and its enforcement decree. The 2026 schedule for these three is below.

🚫 Closed seasons for autumn's big three (Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, rules as of 1 January 2026)

SeafoodKoreanClosed seasonNotes
Blue crab꽃게21 June to 20 AugustLater windows near Yeonpyeong (1 Jul to 31 Aug) and Baengnyeong, Daecheong and Socheong islands (16 Jul to 15 Sep). Crabs with a carapace of 6.4cm or less, and females carrying eggs outside the body, may not be caught at any time.
Fleshy prawn대하1 May to 30 JuneNationwide
Gizzard shad전어1 May to 15 JulyDoes not apply in Gangwon or North Gyeongsang

So jeoneo reopens in mid-July, daeha in July, and blue crab in late August, and by September all three are at their best. Catching them in the closed season is an offence, which is one reason the arrival of “new season” crab in late August is treated as an event.

Jeoneo: the fish that brings the daughter-in-law home

Jeoneo is a small, silvery, bony fish about the length of a hand, and it is the reason for one of Korea’s best-known food proverbs:

가을 전어 굽는 냄새에 집 나간 며느리 돌아온다. "At the smell of autumn jeoneo grilling, the daughter-in-law who ran away comes home." The Korea Tourism Organization's VisitKorea also records a companion saying: autumn jeoneo holds a whole bushel of sesame, meaning it is as nutty and rich as sesame seeds.

The name itself is often read as a pun. The first syllable, jeon, is written with the Chinese character for money (錢), and the usual explanation is that the fish was so good people would pay whatever it cost. According to VisitKorea, jeoneo puts on flesh from September to November after spawning, and is at its best from late September to mid-October, before the bones harden in November.

There are three classic ways to eat it:

A hard year for jeoneo

2026 has been a poor year. The Aju Business Daily reported, citing Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries data, that jeoneo landings at nine South Gyeongsang fisheries cooperatives in August 2026 were 50,773kg, down 72.2% from 182,339kg a year earlier, after the KMA recorded the South Sea's warmest June-to-August sea surface temperature in ten years (25.4°C). Retail prices at Busan's Jagalchi and Bujeon markets reached ₩35,000 to ₩40,000 per kg in early September.

Daeha: is it really wild?

Often it is not, and the price difference is large enough to matter.

대하 daeha is the fleshy prawn (Penaeus orientalis, also called the Chinese white shrimp) native to the Yellow Sea. It is hard to keep alive: wild daeha die quickly once out of the water. Most live shrimp you see swimming in tanks at restaurants are 흰다리새우 (whiteleg shrimp), a farmed species. Both are sold in autumn, and both are sometimes loosely called daeha.

🦐 Wild daeha vs farmed whiteleg shrimp (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries guidance)

FeatureWild daeha (대하)Whiteleg shrimp (흰다리새우)
Snout spike (이마뿔)Extends beyond the tip of the headShorter than the tip of the head
AntennaeTwo to three times the body lengthNoticeably shorter
TailGreenishReddish
Legs (raw)ReddishTranslucent white
Sold howUsually already dead, on iceOften live, in tanks
PriceTwo to three times more expensiveCheaper

Cooking turns both red, so check the snout spike and antennae before you pay, not after.

The classic way to eat either is 새우 소금구이 (saeu sogeumgui, salt-grilled shrimp): the shrimp go into a covered pan on a thick bed of coarse salt over a gas burner at the table, and roast in their shells until pink. You peel and eat the body first. Many restaurants then take the heads back to the kitchen and fry or butter-grill them until crisp, which is arguably the best part.

How much does autumn seafood cost in 2026?

More than last year for crab and jeoneo, and it varies week to week.

These are reference figures, not stall prices. Wholesale and auction benchmarks at Noryangjin are lower than what individual stalls charge a walk-in customer, and festival and port prices are set locally.

₩18,000/kg
Male blue crab at Noryangjin, second week of Sept 2026 (₩10,000 a year earlier)
₩10,700/kg
Female blue crab, same week (₩4,800 a year earlier)
₩20,600/kg
Live jeoneo, same week, down from ₩32,900 the week before
₩45,000/kg
Daeha at Namdang Port under its 2026 unified festival price (wild or farmed not stated)

The Noryangjin figures come from Suhyup Noryangjin’s weekly market report for 7-12 September, as reported by the Korea Economic Daily, which attributed the crab rise to the first post-closed-season stocks running out and a weaker catch as coastal water temperatures rose; crab arrivals that week were 28,796kg, about half the 62,545kg of the same week in 2025. The daeha figures come from News Home’s report of 5 September 2026, which compared Namdang Port’s ₩45,000 per kg (₩60,000 at restaurants) with ₩30,000 per kg for wild daeha at Baeksajang Port in neighbouring Taean.

Male or female crab?

In autumn, buy male blue crab (수꽃게). Males are full of firm meat after the summer; females are prized in spring, when they carry roe, and are cheaper in autumn. To tell them apart, flip the crab: males have a narrow, pointed abdominal flap, females a broad rounded one.

Where can you eat autumn seafood in Seoul?

Three markets, each with a different character.

Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market

The obvious choice and the easiest for visitors: a subway stop on Line 1 and Line 9, hundreds of stalls, and a floor of restaurants that will cook what you buy. In autumn the crab tanks take over. Our full Noryangjin guide covers the layout, auctions and the area’s cheap eats, and our king crab and lobster guide breaks down cooking fees.

Garak Market

Seoul’s biggest wholesale market, in Songpa-gu, where restaurant owners buy. The seafood section in Garak Mall works much like Noryangjin, with fewer tourists. See our Garak Market guide.

Sorae Port, Incheon

A working fishing port at the edge of Incheon, reachable on the Suin-Bundang Line (Soraepogu Station), and the closest place to Seoul where you can see crab boats come in. The 26th Sorae Port Festival runs from 2 to 4 October 2026 around Haeoreum Plaza, according to Joongboo Ilbo, hosted by Namdong-gu with concerts, fireworks and seafood stalls.

How does ordering work at a Korean fish market?

You buy the seafood in one place and eat it in another, and you pay twice.

Step by step

  • Walk the stalls first. Prices are per kg and change daily. Check two or three stalls before committing.
  • Ask for the price per kg and watch it weighed. Useful words: 1킬로에 얼마예요? (How much per kilo?), 수꽃게 (male crab), 자연산 (wild).
  • Say how you want it. Jeoneo can be sliced for raw eating (회) or kept whole for grilling (구이); crab and daeha are usually steamed (찜) or salt-grilled.
  • The stall points you to a restaurant. These 초장집 (chojangjip, "chilli-sauce houses") upstairs or nearby do not sell fish; they supply the table, side dishes and drinks.
  • Pay the setting fee. The restaurant charges a per-person 상차림비 (sangcharimbi, table-setting fee), plus extra for cooking: steaming crab, salt-grilling shrimp or turning the leftover fish frame into spicy stew (매운탕). Ask the rates before you sit down.
  • Drinks and rice are extra. Budget for soju, beer and a bowl of rice each.

Setting fees vary by market and restaurant. Namu Wiki, the Korean reference wiki, gives a typical range of a few thousand won per person, with spicy stew charged separately, and notes that busy seasons and tourist areas run higher. Treat that as a floor and confirm at the door.

Which autumn seafood festivals are on in 2026?

As of 28 September, three have already finished, two are on now and Sorae is still ahead.

Festival prices

At festival ports, prices are posted per kg and sometimes fixed by the organisers, but wild and farmed shrimp can sit side by side. Ask 자연산이에요? (Is it wild?) and check the snout and antennae yourself.

What if you miss autumn?

Blue crab does not disappear: the spring female-crab season follows, and soy-marinated crab is served year-round. Jeoneo and wild daeha, on the other hand, are essentially an autumn-only treat, gone from menus by the end of November. If you are in Korea between September and early November, this is the window.
