Guri is a compact city on Seoul’s eastern edge, and most of it is apartment blocks. Yet it holds the grave of the man who founded the Joseon dynasty. King Taejo was buried here in 1408, and his mound is still covered not in neat turf but in tall eulalia grass, brought, the story goes, from his hometown in Hamhung, in today’s North Korea. Eight more royal tombs followed, and the cluster became Donggureung, the “eastern nine tombs.”

A thousand years earlier this was a frontier too. On Achasan, the ridge Guri shares with Seoul, Goguryeo soldiers manned a line of small stone forts about 1,500 years ago. Today both sites are a short ride from Jamsil: since August 2024 Line 8 has run straight into Guri, so the city works as an easy half day, with a gopchang alley that has been feeding locals since the late 1990s.

The short answer

  • Where: on Seoul's eastern border. Line 8 from Jamsil, 7 stops to Guri Station and 8 to Donggureung, no transfer.
  • Best for: Joseon royal history, a forest walk among the tombs, spring canola and autumn cosmos on the Han River, and a cheap gopchang dinner.
  • Must-see: Donggureung, the largest Joseon royal tomb group (UNESCO World Heritage, closed Mondays).
  • Must-eat: spicy stir-fried gopchang in the Doldari alley, and kimchi-braised mackerel at Eorangchu by Donggureung Station.

How do you get to Guri from Seoul?

Line 8 from Jamsil, without changing trains. The Byeollae extension opened on 10 August 2024 and added six stations: Amsa Historic Park, Jangja Lake Park, Guri, Donggureung, Dasan and Byeollae. Guri Station is also on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, which is the easier way in from Cheongnyangni and northern Seoul.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport put the full Byeollae–Jamsil run at about 27 minutes when the line opened, and news reports give Guri–Jamsil as roughly 20 minutes. Seoul’s Climate Card (the unlimited-ride transit pass) is accepted on the extension.

What is Guri known for?

Royal tombs, a Goguryeo frontier and riverside flower fields. For most Seoulites, Guri means two things: Donggureung, where school groups learn about Joseon kings, and the Han River park where the city plants huge fields of canola in spring and cosmos in autumn. Locals would add the gopchang alley by the market.

Guri in five dates

  • About 1,500 years ago — Goguryeo troops garrison a chain of small forts (보루 boru) along Achasan.
  • 1408 — King Taejo, founder of Joseon, is buried at Geonwolleung, the first tomb at Donggureung.
  • 1998 — The Doldari gopchang alley forms next to Guri Traditional Market.
  • 2001 — Guri Hangang Park holds its first canola festival; it has run every May since.
  • 2024 — Line 8 reaches Guri (August 10).

Donggureung’s grass mound is the detail Koreans remember. Taejo asked to be buried under the grass of his home region, so Geonwolleung is covered in 억새 eoksae, eulalia, rather than turf. It is cut only once a year, on Hansik in early April, in a ceremony; in 2026 that fell on 6 April.

Donggureung — The largest group of Joseon royal tombs, part of the UNESCO-listed Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Nine tombs hold seven kings and ten queens, starting with Taejo’s Geonwolleung and including Wolleung, the tomb of King Yeongjo. Paths link the mounds through a large forest, and the small Donggureung History and Culture Center near the entrance explains the site; it is included in the ticket. This autumn two normally closed forest trails (Hwireung–Wolleung and Gyeongneung–nursery) are open until 29 November 2026, 09:00–16:30 in November. The entrance is a short walk up Donggureung-ro from Donggureung Station. The Korea Heritage Service has announced new palace and royal-tomb fees from January 2027, so the price below may change.

Guri Hangang Park — A long riverside park on the Han, where the city plants about 120,000㎡ of flower fields. The canola festival has been held every May since 2001 (8–10 May in 2026), and the cosmos festival follows in October (9–11 October in 2026, with extra village buses from the Line 8 stations). The rest of the year it is a place to cycle or walk the 6.53 km path; there is a free daytime picnic and camping area. It lies south of the city centre, so take a taxi from Guri Station outside festival days.

Goguryeo Blacksmith Village and Achasan — A city-run site at the foot of Achasan with a museum on the Goguryeo forts found on the ridge and the soldiers who lived in them about 1,500 years ago. From here you can walk up toward the fort sites; in 2026 the city also ran guided family walks to Achasan Fort 4. Check the city’s website for current hours before going, as we could not confirm them.

Timing tips

Who Guri suits: history fans collecting Joseon royal tombs, people staying around Jamsil who want a half day out, and anyone in Seoul for the May canola or October cosmos. Avoid Mondays: Donggureung and Eorangchu are both closed. The last Wednesday of the month is free at the tombs. The gopchang alley fills up on weekend evenings, so arrive early or go on a weekday.
