Most of Namdong-gu is offices, apartment blocks and factories. Incheon City Hall stands in Guwol-dong, the Namdong Industrial Complex spreads over reclaimed land to the south, and the rest is the kind of residential Incheon that visitors never see. Then, at the southwestern corner, the city stops at a muddy tidal channel and a fishing port that has been selling salted shrimp to the capital for most of a century.

That port, Sorae, is the reason to come. It grew up next to salt pans laid out under Japanese rule, which closed in 1996 and are now a wetland park with windmills, reed beds and a restored salt field. Add Incheon’s largest park, an 800-year-old ginkgo tree and a city-hall district full of places locals eat, and Namdong makes a full day out of Seoul without a single palace in it.

The short answer

  • Where: southeastern Incheon, across the Sorae channel from Wolgot in Siheung. Soraepogu Station on the Suin-Bundang Line; Incheon City Hall Station on Incheon Lines 1 and 2.
  • Best for: a seafood market without the Noryangjin crowds, a flat walk through old salt pans, and a big park day with kids. Half a day for Sorae, a full day with the Grand Park.
  • Must-see: Sorae Wetland Ecological Park — free, with a salt-making exhibition hall and windmills over the reeds.
  • Must-eat: sashimi or blue crab from the Sorae Port fish market, eaten upstairs, and Hwanghae-style buckwheat cold noodles in Mansu-dong.

How do you get to Namdong-gu from Seoul?

By subway: the Suin-Bundang Line for Sorae, Line 1 plus Incheon Line 1 for Guwol-dong. Namdong is spread out, and its two halves sit on different lines. Soraepogu Station is three stops past Oido, the last stop of Seoul’s Line 4. Guwol-dong is reached from Bupyeong on Line 1, or from the Gangnam side on Line 7 to Bupyeong-gu Office, then Incheon Line 1. Inside the district, Incheon Line 2 links City Hall to Moraenae Market and Incheon Grand Park.

The GTX-B express line, which will stop at Incheon City Hall, is still under construction; Asia Economy reported the start of work in Songdo in March 2024, and there is no service yet. If you are coming straight from the airport, see our Incheon Airport to Seoul comparison — Namdong is not on the airport line, so it works better as a separate day trip than on a layover.

What is Namdong-gu known for?

Salt, salted shrimp and Incheon’s town hall. Sorae was a salt coast. Kyeongin Ilbo notes that the colonial authorities built a railway here in August 1937 to haul salt out and opened Sorae Station; according to the Korea Tourism Organization, people displaced after liberation settled by the channel, caught shrimp from a few unpowered boats, turned it into 새우젓 saeujeot (salted shrimp) and carried it at dawn on the narrow-gauge Suin Line to sell in Incheon, Suwon and Seoul. Some of that shrimp aged in a cave in Gwangmyeong — see our Gwangmyeong guide.

Namdong-gu in six dates

  • 1937 — a railway and Sorae Station open to carry salt from the Sorae salt pans.
  • 1996 — salt production at Sorae ends.
  • 2009 — the restored salt pans and tidal creeks open as Sorae Wetland Ecological Park (completed in May).
  • 2012 — the Suin Line returns as a modern subway, with a station at Soraepogu (June 30); the Sorae History Museum opens a day earlier.
  • 2017 — fire destroys much of the old open-air fish market (March 18); a modernised market reopens in December 2020.
  • 2026 — on July 1 Incheon redraws its districts. Namdong-gu keeps its name and borders; its neighbours Michuhol, Yeonsu and Bupyeong are also unchanged.

Inland is a different Namdong. 구월동 Guwol-dong is Incheon’s civic centre: City Hall and the commercial streets around Incheon City Hall Station, where much of the city meets after work. Around it are Ganseok-dong, Mansu-dong and Jangsu-dong, residential neighbourhoods that run out into the hills of Incheon Grand Park. If you are not here for the port or the park, there is little reason to come — but those two are worth the trip.

Sorae Port — The port is busiest when the tide is in and the boats unload. The market here runs from the basement to the second floor, with about 340 shops, roughly 300 of them raw-fish counters and salted-seafood sellers, according to the Korea Tourism Organization; a separate comprehensive fish market has stood beside it since 2011. Spring and autumn are blue crab season, and the shrimp harvest for kimchi-making fills the alleys in autumn. Climb the 21 m Shrimp Tower for a view over the channel, then walk the waterfront through Haeoreum Park. The 26th Sorae Port Festival, held there on October 2–4, 2026, drew about 510,000 people, Namdong-gu told Kyunghyang Shinmun. A coastal path continues past the old Sorae railway bridge, and across the channel lies Wolgot Port in Siheung — covered in our Siheung guide.

Sorae Wetland Ecological Park — Japanese developers laid out salt pans here, and salt was made until 1996. The park project restored the tidal flats, creeks and abandoned pans as habitat for marine life and migratory birds, and finished in May 2009. Today it covers about 1.51 km²: reed fields, a row of windmills, a restored salt field with its salt warehouse, bird-watching decks and a seawater foot bath. The exhibition hall explains the wetland, Incheon’s tidal flats and how salt is made, with a 70-seat video room and a rooftop deck looking over the port and the bird roost. The walk from the port is flat, and at sunset the windmills and reeds are the photograph everyone takes.

Sorae History Museum — Opened on June 29, 2012 as Namdong-gu’s first public museum, built to keep the objects of a fishing village that was disappearing under new towns. Four themes: the Sorae mudflats, the port, the salt pans and the Suin Line, with fishing gear, a salt-raking activity, a model of the narrow-gauge train and a recreated Sorae Station waiting room. It takes under an hour and costs 500 won.

Incheon Grand Park — At 2.67 km², the city’s biggest park, in Jangsu-dong on Namdong’s eastern edge. Inside are a lake, camping and sports grounds, the Incheon Arboretum (1,363 species, 228,000 plants), a wood-culture centre, a healing forest and a free children’s zoo with 31 species, from meerkats and fennec foxes to ostriches. Note that the zoo has been closed since September 21, 2026 to prevent foot-and-mouth disease, until the outbreak ends; check before you go. The grounds are open from 05:00, so an early start is easy.

Jangsu-dong Ginkgo Tree — Near Incheon Grand Park in the Manuigol valley, this ginkgo is more than 800 years old, 28.2 m tall and 9.1 m around, and is Natural Monument No. 562. It usually turns gold around the start of November. The Manuigol road below it is a cluster of restaurants that park visitors drive out to; a May 2026 Kyeonggi Ilbo report on local election pledges described the valley as Namdong’s food and small-business hub.

Where do locals eat in Namdong-gu?

At the port, in the markets and in old noodle houses rather than on the main streets. The places below were listed or reviewed in 2026 sources; prices are quoted from those sources.

Sorae Port fish market — Pick live fish, shrimp or blue crab at a counter downstairs, have it cut, and take it to the second floor, where you can sit down and eat it as sashimi. Salted shrimp and other 젓갈 jeotgal are the thing to carry home. The market has a reputation to repair: Kyeongin Ilbo listed a crab-swap row in 2023, a viral complaint about two snow crabs for 370,000 won in February 2024 and an allegation of rigged scales, and Seoul Shinmun reported that the 2020 reopening brought price tags and a consumer complaint desk on the second floor. Compare a few stalls, look at the price tag, and watch the weighing. For the autumn catch, see our Korean autumn seafood guide; for Seoul’s own market, the Noryangjin guide.

Hwanghae Sun Momil Naengmyeon (Mansu-dong, Guwolmal-ro 92) — A noodle house that has run for more than 30 years in a Mansu-dong alley, busy all year, not just in summer. The recipe came from a founder born in Hwanghae-do, now in North Korea, and was handed down through the family. The broth is beef bone and brisket, with none of the sand-lance fish sauce some cold-noodle shops use, and the noodles mix hulled and unhulled buckwheat. A Hot Siksin feature in October 2026 listed mul-naengmyeon at 9,500 won and the half-and-half at 10,000 won, open daily 10:30–21:00. Mansu-dong sits between Guwol-dong and the Grand Park, so it fits on the way to the park.

Moraenae Market (Guwol-dong) — A neighbourhood market that formed in the early 1980s, a short walk from Moraenae Market Station on Incheon Line 2. The Korea Tourism Organization listing (updated June 2026) names its snacks: 꼬마김밥 kkoma gimbap (finger-size rolls), fish cakes and tteokbokki, and notes that its seafood comes in from Yeonan Pier and Sorae Port. Come at lunchtime, eat standing at a stall, and walk off the gimbap around the alleys. The market closes for Seollal and Chuseok; stall hours vary.

What does a one-day Namdong route look like?

Practical tip

  • Seasons: spring and autumn for blue crab, autumn for the kimchi-shrimp season and the Sorae Port Festival (early October), early November for the ginkgo and the Grand Park's autumn colour.
  • Weekends: the port is packed on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. A weekday visit means shorter queues upstairs and room to compare stalls.
  • Walking it: Namdong's coastal walking course runs from Sorae Port past Haeoreum Park to Black-faced Spoonbill Island in the Namdong reservoir, named for the endangered birds.
  • Map apps: Namdong-gu's name did not change in 2026, but signs and blogs written before July 2026 may still call its neighbours Jung-gu, Dong-gu and Seo-gu.
