The short answer
- MU:DS is the goods brand built on the collections of Korea's national museums, including the National Museum of Korea. Sales hit a record ₩41.3 billion in 2025, and ₩21.8 billion worth sold in the first half of 2026 alone.
- The surest place to buy is the shops inside the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan. The permanent galleries are free, so you can go in just for the goods.
- Don't miss: the Pensive Bodhisattva miniature, the drunken-scholar cups whose faces blush when you pour in something cold, and the magpie-and-tiger pin made famous by KPop Demon Hunters.
- Hot items sell out the moment they land. Go on a weekday morning, and skip the dirt-cheap "museum goods" on overseas shopping apps.
10 a.m. on a weekday at the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan. One spot fills up before the galleries do: the museum shop next to the Permanent Exhibition Hall. People at the counter are clutching palm-sized golden Bodhisattvas, pens shaped like a scholar’s gat hat and tiger pins, while a corner of the display wears a “Sold Out” sign. In summer 2025 the magpie-and-tiger pin sold out within 20 minutes of opening, and the shop taped a sold-out notice to its entrance.
In Korea, the museum souvenir is no longer something you grab on the way out — it has become a reason to go to the museum. This guide covers where, what and how to buy museum goods in Seoul. If you are still choosing a museum, start with the Seoul museums Koreans actually visit.
What is MU:DS, and why is everyone buying it?
Because it lets you put a national treasure on your desk. MU:DS — say “myu-jeu” — combines “museum” and “goods.” It is the merchandise brand of the National Museum Foundation of Korea, which turns artifacts from Korea’s national museums into things you can use: the National Treasure Pensive Bodhisattva shrunk to a miniature, a scholar from a Kim Hong-do painting slipped into a drinking cup, a folk-painting tiger turned into a pin.
The numbers exploded in summer 2025. Netflix’s animated hit KPop Demon Hunters made its grim-reaper gat hats and tiger sidekick famous worldwide, and museum goods that looked similar started selling like official merch. The magpie-and-tiger pin, based on the folk painting Hojakdo, was the top seller of 2025 with about 90,000 sold, and a pen shaped like a gat with its chin strap sold out every time it was restocked.
📈 MU:DS annual sales (as reported from National Museum Foundation of Korea figures)
| Year | Sales | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | ₩6.1 billion | — |
| 2022 | ₩11.6 billion | First year above ₩10 billion |
| 2024 | ₩21.2 billion | — |
| 2025 | ₩41.3 billion | Record year, the KPop Demon Hunters effect |
| H1 2026 | ₩21.8 billion | Half a year beat all of 2024 |
The appeal comes down to this: they are souvenirs that don’t feel like souvenirs. Instead of fridge magnets and postcards, you get cups, keyboards, pens and lamps you will actually use, each with the story of its artifact attached. One German visitor told the Korea Times that, unlike the magnets and postcards she saw at museums elsewhere, Korea’s goods were genuinely practical — her only problem was that her suitcase was too small.
Where do you buy museum goods at the National Museum of Korea?
There are three shops and one brand showroom inside the museum. The permanent galleries are free, so you can walk straight in, shop and leave.
🛍️ Goods shops inside the National Museum of Korea (per Naeil Shinmun)
| Shop | Location | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Shop 1 (main) | West Building 1F, next to Eunumhall | Biggest range; start here on a first visit |
| Shop 2 | Permanent Exhibition Hall 1F, center | A quick stop mid-visit |
| Children’s Shop | West Building 1F, next to the Children’s Museum | Families, educational toys |
| MU:DS Brand Showroom | Permanent Exhibition Hall 3F, center | Brand displays and story |
- Hours: Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, Sun 09:30–17:30; Wed and Sat 09:30–21:00 (last entry 30 minutes before closing). Opening moved 30 minutes earlier from March 2026. Closed on 1 January and on Seollal and Chuseok days.
- Getting there: from Ichon Station (Line 4 and Gyeongui–Jungang Line) Exit 2, a walkway (the Museum Nadeul-gil) leads to the museum.
- Crowds: the museum drew 5.25 million visitors from January to August this year, up 21%. Expect lines at the shops too on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.
Practical tip
- Wednesday and Saturday evenings are the hidden sweet spot: the museum stays open until 9 p.m. and is usually calmer than daytime.
- Shop last. See the real Pensive Bodhisattvas in the "Room of Quiet Contemplation" on the 2nd floor first, and the miniature will mean a lot more.
- Ceramics and glass are heavy and fragile. If you can swing by right before flying home, buy them then.
What to buy: signature MU:DS items and prices
On a first visit, look for at least one of three: the Pensive Bodhisattva miniature, the drunken-scholar cups or the magpie-and-tiger pin. They are the face of the brand, and the most likely to be sold out.
💰 Confirmed MU:DS prices (from reports and official store listings; may vary over time)
| Item | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Magpie-and-tiger pin | ₩14,900 | July 2025 online preorder price |
| Pensive Bodhisattva miniature, Maeum series | ₩65,000 | 3 poses, sold in rounds |
| Dancheong keyboard | ₩119,800 | — |
| Hearth incense set | ₩149,000 | — |
| Black-glazed moon jar | ₩224,000 | Premium line |
Other steady sellers include the “Smile of Silla” sauce bowls based on a face-patterned roof tile (the pattern sharpens when you pour sauce in), a 3D-printed miniature of the Baekje Gilt-bronze Incense Burner, a wine stopper shaped like a Joseon military hat, king-and-queen chopsticks and a moon-jar door chime. In July 2026, a keycap keyring shaped like a royal seal and a rainbow-striped gonggi stone set sold out online and in store the moment they launched.
Background: limited collaborations
- BTS: a collaboration featuring patterns from the Sacred Bell of King Seongdeok launched on 20 March 2026 with the album ARIRANG, taking about ₩43 million at the museum shop in two days.
- Kakao Friends: in May 2026, 17 collaboration items arrived alongside giant statues of Ryan and Choonsik striking the Bodhisattva's pose.
- BLACKPINK: a limited collaboration was announced for 8 August.
- Collaboration editions are rarely reproduced. If you see one, buy it that day.
How do you buy MU:DS without hitting a sellout?
Aim for the museum shop on a weekday morning, and watch the official online store’s preorders for new releases. Online and in-store purchase terms are the same.
- Online preorders — Bestsellers are released on the official store as preorders split by shipping date. When the magpie-and-tiger pin opened at 3 p.m. in July 2025, more than 2,000 people logged on at once and a queue formed; it then sold in batches shipping on 14, 21 and 31 July and 18 August.
- Restocks — Most items come back after another production run, but timing differs by item. MU:DS’s official social accounts and the online store’s notices are the fastest way to find out.
- In person — An item sold out online may still have a few left at the museum shop, and vice versa. Check both.
The official store is described as taking overseas orders, but up to August 2025 its overseas site logged just 169 orders worth ₩33 million — in other words, getting MU:DS delivered abroad is still not easy. Buying while you are in Seoul is the realistic plan.
Which other museums have great goods shops?
For contemporary art, MMCA; for artist-collab limited editions, Leeum; for fashion collabs, Lotte Museum of Art — these are the names that come up most for museum goods right now.
🎨 Museum shops worth a detour in and around Seoul (per Herald Business, July 2026)
| Museum | Area | Talked-about goods | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| MMCA Shop | Jongno, Seoul (MMCA Seoul) | Damien Hirst show goods (magnet, catalogue, pouch, tote, postcards) | All top 5 sellers of H1 2026 were Hirst items; H1 sales ₩2.36 billion |
| Leeum Museum of Art | Yongsan, Seoul (Hannam-dong) | Artist-collab pouches, postcards, white porcelain stem cup | Collabs often sell out |
| Lotte Museum of Art | Songpa, Seoul (Lotte World Tower, Jamsil) | VERDY exhibition collab goods | Gone on launch day |
| Hoam Museum of Art | Yongin, Gyeonggi | Nicolas Party fan handkerchief set, Jeong Seon art prints | Outside Seoul; sellouts reported |
| Gansong Art Museum | Daegu | Mother-of-pearl tumbler and bottle | Outside Seoul — for a Daegu trip |
- The Damien Hirst show (20 March–28 June 2026) has closed, but the MMCA Shop is also known for upcycled pieces such as tumblers made from exhibition scrap and “MMCA Green” trays and bookends made from waste plasterboard.
- National museums exist outside Seoul too. Some MU:DS only appear at regional museums, like the Gyeongju National Museum’s “Smile of Silla” roof-tile parasol and pouch — if you visit Gyeongju, Buyeo or Gongju, check the museum shop.

What should foreign travelers know before buying?
Koreans queue for these too, so travelers are not at any special disadvantage. A few things make it easier, though.
- Who buys: 72.5% of buyers are women, mostly in their 20s to 40s, who treat the goods as proof of a museum visit and an affordable way to own art. Sales to foreign customers reached about ₩1 billion in H1 2026, nearly double a year earlier.
- Best gifts: light, unbreakable things — pins, keyrings, pens, sauce bowls. Given weight and packing, the ₩10,000–30,000 range is the sweet spot.
- Tax refund: ask at the counter whether the shop is a tax-free member. Many Korean stores give an instant refund on purchases of ₩15,000 or more, but we could not confirm whether the museum shops do. Our Korea tax refund guide explains how much you actually get back.
- Pair it with character goods: KPop Demon Hunters blurred the line between museum goods and character merch. For Kakao Friends and Line Friends stores, see our Seoul character goods guide.
Nobody knows how long the museum goods craze will last. But right now, the National Museum of Korea’s shop is the place in Seoul to pick up the most Korean and the most useful souvenir, with free admission. Walk out of the Bodhisattva room and take that smile home in the palm of your hand — that is how a lot of Koreans enjoy their museums these days.
