Anam & Bomun: Seoul's Hidden University Neighborhood (2026) — 30 Local Eats & Cafes

Ride Seoul Subway Line 6 northeast and three stations roll past in quick succession: Bomun → Anam → Korea University. Nine hundred meters, then another seven hundred. Walkable, every stretch of it.

There’s no tourism landmark in this corridor. Instead, three things overlap here: a 1934 stone university campus, the world headquarters of the only bhikkhuni Buddhist order in existence, and a cafe street strung along a stream that was buried under concrete, then brought back to life. All three sit inside a 20-minute walking radius, and none of them show up in guidebooks.

Where exactly are Anam and Bomun in Seoul?

Administratively, this is Seongbuk-gu. Though the alleys right outside Korea University’s main gate fall into Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu — literally across a single street. Same commercial district, two different municipal addresses.

Bomun Station’s location is surprisingly useful. On the Ui-Sinseol Line, one stop north gets you to Sungshin Women’s Univ. Station (Line 4), one stop south to Sinseol-dong Station (Lines 1 & 2). That means from Bomun you can reach Lines 1, 2, 4, and 6 with a single transfer each.

Why do tourists not know about this neighborhood?

It’s not random. It’s the subway alignment.

Through the 1970s, roughly 40% of city buses coming over Miari Pass ran along Bomun-ro. Bomun-dong was a major corridor through northeast Seoul. Then Line 4 opened in 1985, and the flow of people shifted decisively toward the Dongsomun-ro axis passing Hansung Univ. and Sungshin Women’s Univ. Bomun-dong wouldn’t get its own subway — Line 6 — until 2000, fifteen years later.

What this means for a visitor is simple: this isn’t a hanok tourism zone like Bukchon. It’s a lived-in hanok neighborhood that happens to share streets with cafes. Not a photo destination, and that’s exactly why there are no crowds.

What is there to see in this neighborhood?

Bomunsa Temple — world headquarters of the only bhikkhuni Buddhist order

Korea has a lot of temples. Bomunsa is different. It’s the headquarters of the Bomun Order of Korean Buddhism, and the Bomun Order is the only bhikkhuni (fully ordained female monastic) order in the world. The foundation was established in 1971, and the order was formally founded in April 1972.

This site was a women’s space long before that. During the Joseon era, it was one of the four major bhikkhuni temples outside the city walls, known as Tapgol Seungbang (塔谷僧房, “Pagoda Valley Nunnery”). It was a place where palace women, upon leaving court, became bhikkhunis and spent their final years. When the Main Hall (Daeungjeon) roof was being repaired in 2017, three ridge-beam inscriptions were discovered — confirming construction in 1747, and establishing through documents that all donors in 1747 were women, and all office-holders in 1824 were bhikkhunis.

Two things to see:

• Seokguram Grotto — A scaled-down replica of the Gyeongju Seokguram, built over 23 months from August 1970 to June 1972 with approximately 4,500 stonemasons and 2,400 tons of granite. The Gyeongju original has one front entrance; this version has three.
• Octagonal Nine-Story Sarira Pagoda — Erected in 1978, modeled after the pagoda at Woljeongsa Temple on Odaesan Mountain. It enshrines three pieces of the Buddha’s true sarira (relics) brought from Sri Lanka.

The neighborhood itself takes its name from this temple.

Korea University — a stone campus built in 1934

Two buildings on campus are designated National Historic Sites.

When these were built, stone buildings in Seoul were virtually nonexistent outside the Japanese Government-General building. Architect Park Dong-jin was a pioneer of Korean modern architecture — and a former participant in the March 1st Independence Movement who received a suspended sentence. When the Old Main Library opened, its second-floor reading room seated 250, and every seat had an electric lamp and a leather swivel chair.

The campus has been used as a filming location for several Korean dramas: 「D.P. 2」, 「The Penthouse」, and 「Why Her?」 are confirmed.

Gaeunsa and Botasa — neighborhood temples hiding a national treasure

There’s another temple in Anam-dong. Gaeunsa traces its origins to Yeongdosa, founded by Master Muhak in 1396. It moved to its current location and changed its name in 1779. The original Yeongdosa site is now occupied by Korea University’s College of Science and Engineering.

Behind the affiliated hermitage Botasa, carved into a rock face, is a Rock-Carved Seated Bodhisattva (National Treasure No. 1828). Tourists almost never make it here.

Seongbukcheon — a stream buried, then brought back

Seongbukcheon is a 5.11-kilometer stream that begins at Bugaksan Mountain and joins Cheonggyecheon. Its old name was Anamcheon, and that’s where the name “Anam” comes from — a hanja transliteration of anjilbawi, meaning “a rock large enough to sit and rest on.”

Starting in the late 1960s, 3.66 kilometers of the stream were covered over and disappeared beneath roads. Restoration began in 2001, and by October 2010, virtually the entire stretch had been revived. It’s a smaller-scale Cheonggyecheon, but the foot traffic here is local, not tourist. The walking paths are split into two levels — streamside below, cafes and restaurants above — and the roughly 1-kilometer stretch between Sungshin Women’s Univ. Station and Bomun Station is the spring cherry blossom section.

What to eat near Korea University

First thing to know: this commercial district splits between Anam Station and Korea University Station. The two stations are 700 meters apart, so if you try to cover everything at once, you’ll be walking back and forth.

• Anam Station — Chamsari-gil, Gaeunsa-gil, College of Political Science & Economics back gate. Most restaurants are here.
• Korea University Station — Main gate area, Jegi-dong side. Old-school bars and Indian curry places are on this end.

How to walk the Seongbukcheon cafe street

Come out of Bomun Station Exits 3 or 4 and follow Seongbukcheon. Cafes cluster along Goryeodae-ro 6-gil, 7-gil, 8-gil, Bomun-ro 18-gil and 25-gil, and Anam-ro 3-gil and 5-gil. You’ll pass more than ten within a ten-minute walk.

The price baseline is clear. Seven cafes I checked all listed an americano at 4,500 won. The main exception is Coffee Nare (3,800 won, or 3,200 won for takeout).

Measured from Korea University’s Main Hall, the Seoul Tourism Organization has officially registered these spots within walking distance.

And if you head out toward Jegi-dong Station on Line 1, you’ll find Gyeongdong Market. It’s within walking distance from both Anam and Bomun.
