Busan to Fukuoka is 55 minutes by plane, yet plenty of travelers still take the boat — and for good reason. The overnight ferry folds a hotel night into the journey, the luggage rules are generous (free up to 30kg), and unlike the airport, the terminal is a short walk from Busan Station. The Busan sailing is an overnight on board affair — board in the early evening, sleep, and walk off in the morning. Since you’re on the ship for nearly three hours between boarding and departure, the trick is to eat dinner beforehand or bring food with you. Sailings can be cancelled in bad weather (there were real cancellations in March 2026), and every spring there’s a roughly two-week maintenance suspension — in 2026 the dry dock ran April 15–30. Suspension dates are posted month by month on the ferry company’s website calendar.
Walk from Busan Station to the terminal
Busan Port International Passenger Terminal is linked to KTX Busan Station by a covered walkway. Follow the connector bridge from the station side for about seven minutes to reach the terminal's 2nd floor; the New Camellia ticket office and departure hall are on the 3rd floor. No airport bus, no taxi — that's the quiet advantage of this route.

Beyond the fare, each port tacks on its own surcharges. Leaving Busan: a ₩6,000 terminal usage fee, a ₩1,000 tourism promotion fund, and a ₩10,000 fuel surcharge — ₩17,000 in total. Leaving Hakata: a ¥500 terminal usage fee, ¥1,000 Japan international tourist tax, and ¥1,000 fuel surcharge; with a round-trip ticket these are paid in won at booking.
The fuel surcharge and Japan international tourist tax were announced to rise from July 1, 2026, so go by the final total on the booking screen at the time you reserve. Students (under 30, with proof) and people with disabilities get 20% off. Cancellation fees step up in stages: ₩3,000 up to 8 days before departure, 10% from 7–3 days out, 30% from 2 days before until 18:00 on the day, and no refund after that.

How does immigration work?
The process mirrors the airport’s, just smaller — and often faster. Here’s the order when departing Busan.
Busan Port departure in 6 steps
- Show your passport at the ticket office and collect your boarding pass (closes 19:00)
- Check any bags over 30kg, bicycles, and bulky items at the luggage counter
- Declare cash over US$10,000 and valuables to customs
- Security screening
- Exit immigration — automated e-gates are available
- Board with the crew's guidance (19:40)
After arriving in Hakata, the order is: quarantine → immigration (fill in the foreigner entry card) → carry-on inspection → collect checked luggage → submit the traveler’s declaration form. The bus from Hakata Port International Terminal to Hakata Station takes about 15 minutes. On board you’ll find an observation bath, a restaurant (seaweed soup set meal in the morning), a convenience store and duty-free shop, and a karaoke room; cabin outlets are 110V, so bring a pig-nose plug adapter.
