Gangwon resorts trip people up when you pick by the listed rate alone. The water park and ski slopes may sit in the same complex, but passes are usually sold separately — and the KTX schedule out of Seoul swings wildly by day of the week.
So this article checks exactly two things. First, whether the facilities are included in the room rate or billed separately. Second, how many minutes the KTX takes from Cheongnyangni and Seoul Station, and how much farther you still have to drive from the station to the resort. Figures I couldn’t verify are marked as not verified. Hotel rates change constantly with date, occupancy and cancellation terms, and the values below are the lowest listed prices from the August 2026 feed. I converted at 1 USD = ₩1,400.
Are the facilities included in the room rate?
Usually not. Both properties I could verify list the pool or water park as an extra charge, and breakfast is separate too.

That’s where the math gets interesting. Skybay Hotel Gyeongpo’s listed USD 91.95 works out to about ₩128,700. Use the pool for two days, though, and ₩120,000 gets added — nearly the cost of a night. Over at the InterContinental, breakfast alone is ₩86,000 for two, which is 46% of the USD 132.75 (about ₩185,900) room rate.

Here’s the takeaway. If you don’t plan to use the facilities, there’s no reason to pay the resort-brand premium. But if skiing or the water park is the whole point, you have to add the pass price to the listed rate before comparing — otherwise the ranking flips on you.
500 m to the Alpensia slopes, 16 minutes by car from Jinbu Station
Verified: 500 m to the Alpensia ski slopes, 3.9 km to the Yongpyong slopes, and 8.6 km / about 16 minutes by car from Jinbu KTX Station. Equipment rental, lessons and a ski shuttle are in the facility list. Reference rate from the feed: USD 132.75 per night.
Prices and availability as of August 2026; vary by date and option. The water park is an extra-charge facility and breakfast costs ₩43,000 per adult, so if you won't use the facilities, a lower-priced property in the same area is the better bet.
How long does the KTX actually take to Gangwon?
The run from Cheongnyangni to Gangneung takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. The Gangneung Line KTX opened in December 2017 and now runs as the KTX-Eum. Trains start at Seoul or Cheongnyangni and call at Sangbong, Deokso, Yangpyeong, Seowonju, Manjong, Hoengseong, Dunnae, Pyeongchang and Jinbu before Gangneung.

Departure counts swing hard by day of the week. Seoul Station runs 13 times a day, but Cheongnyangni runs just 2 on Monday–Thursday, 9 on Friday and 11 on weekends. In other words, a weekday plan built around Cheongnyangni is likely to fall through — you’re safer reading the timetable by Seoul Station.

Add the two together and you get total door-to-door time. Cheongnyangni to Gyeongpo in Gangneung is 100 minutes by train plus 9 minutes by car — about 110 minutes, comfortably inside two hours even with a transfer wait. Pyeongchang Alpensia, by contrast, adds a 16-minute drive from Jinbu Station, and I couldn’t confirm public transit on that stretch. Given how hard taxis are to catch in winter peak season, ask about the resort shuttle before you book.
The Mugunghwa-ho is only ₩4,000 cheaper
On the Cheongnyangni–Gangneung route, the Mugunghwa-ho costs ₩22,000 and takes about 6 hours; the KTX costs ₩26,000 and takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. The fare gap is just ₩4,000 while the time gap is over four hours — there's essentially no reason to choose the Mugunghwa-ho here.
9 minutes by car from Gangneung Station, 3 minutes on foot to the beach
Verified: 4.5 km / about 9 minutes by car from Gangneung Station, and 200 m / about 3 minutes on foot to Gyeongpo Beach. Add 100 minutes on the train from Cheongnyangni and you're door-to-door in under two hours. Reference rate from the feed: USD 91.95 per night.
Prices and availability as of August 2026; vary by date and option. The pool costs ₩60,000 per day on top, so unless swimming is the point, a lower-priced Gangneung property will do just fine.
How do listed rates spread across the regions?
Sokcho and Pyeongchang are the widest. Sokcho runs from USD 81.45 up to 187.85, and Pyeongchang from USD 68.99 to 132.75.

The feed’s region field collapses everything into a single “Gangwon-do” value, so I couldn’t pin them down further, and I couldn’t confirm distances from stations either. Check the coordinates on a map before booking any of the properties above.
Even within one complex, the listed rate swings sharply by brand. In the Alpensia complex we saw earlier, another brand with the same complex name in its listing runs about a third cheaper.

When you can skip this whole region
First, if you won’t use the facilities, there’s no reason to insist on a resort brand. The bottom of this feed holds properties in the USD 54–82 band, and in some cases even buying a separate water-park pass on top still lands you below a resort’s listed rate.
Second, if skiing is the goal and you need gear too, pricing the room and the pass separately can work in your favor. Lift tickets and equipment rental are sold as separate products rather than bundled into lodging, and the booking platform’s seasonal items go on sale when the winter season opens. Some next-season products aren’t listed yet, so the right order is to check pass prices first, then pick the hotel.
Third, a day trip needs no room at all. Cheongnyangni to Gangneung is 1 hour 40 minutes each way, so 3 hours 20 minutes round trip. Catch a morning train down and an evening train back, and you’re done with two ₩26,000 one-way fares.
One more cheaper alternative: Chuncheon is linked to Seoul by the metropolitan subway, so no KTX fare is involved. The Chuncheon-listed property in this feed is USD 79.60 — lower than the Sokcho and Gangneung beach resorts, and you save on transit too.
