Gapyeong County is where the Bukhangang river leaves the mountains of Gangwon and slows down into a chain of reservoirs before it reaches Seoul. For half a century that water has been the capital’s weekend: university MT trips to riverside pensions, couples on the Gyeongchun Line, families on rented bikes, and since 2002, coach-loads of fans retracing the drama Winter Sonata.

The county’s most famous sight is not technically in it. Nami Island belongs to Chuncheon, in Gangwon; you buy your ticket and board the ferry in Gapyeong. That arrangement sums the place up. Gapyeong is less a destination than a launch pad: an hour by train from Seoul, with half a dozen very different sights within a short taxi ride of one station.

The short answer

  • Where: northeast of Seoul on the Bukhangang river. ITX-Cheongchun to Gapyeong Station is about 60 minutes from Yongsan or 42 from Cheongnyangni.
  • Best for: a nature-and-photos day trip, or one night by the river with the rail bike and the Garden of Morning Calm.
  • Must-see: Nami Island (in Chuncheon, but reached from Gapyeong's ferry dock), Petite France, the Garden of Morning Calm and the Gapyeong Rail Bike.
  • Must-eat: makguksu (buckwheat noodles) and anything made with Gapyeong pine nuts.

How do you get to Gapyeong from Seoul?

Take the ITX-Cheongchun train to Gapyeong Station; most sights are a short bus or taxi ride from there. The ITX is a reserved-seat Korail train on the Gyeongchun Line. The same tracks carry the Gyeongchun Line subway, which is slower and paid with a transit card. Cheongpyeong Station, the ITX stop before Gapyeong, is the better stop for Petite France and the Garden of Morning Calm side of the county.

From Gapyeong Station to the Nami Island ferry dock is about 1.5 km: a 20-minute walk, or about five minutes on bus 10-4 or by taxi. Since June 15, 2026, Gapyeong’s bus 12 (Gapyeong–Seorak) has been rerouted to stop at Petite France, according to the Kyeonggi Shinmun. For a minute-by-minute plan that strings the main stops together, see our Gapyeong day-trip planner.

What is Gapyeong known for?

Rivers, reservoirs and pine forests — and the pine nuts that grow in them. Gapyeong is mountainous; Myeongjisan and Yeonin-san rise in the north, and the Bukhangang and its tributaries run through the south. The Cheongpyeong Dam, built in 1944, flooded the valley and created both Cheongpyeong Lake and the half-moon shape of Nami Island. Ever since the Gyeongchun Line made it reachable from Seoul, the riverbanks have been lined with pensions, campsites and water-ski jetties.

The local product is the 잣 jat, the Korean pine nut. Gapyeong is widely described as Korea’s largest pine-nut producer, and the nut turns up in tofu, dumplings, noodle soup and porridge on local menus.

Two things that surprise first-timers

  • Nami Island is in Gangwon. Its registered address is Namiseom-gil 1, Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon. The ticket office and ferry dock are in Gapyeong-eup, Gyeonggi. The island's own website says it plainly: Namisum is in Chuncheon, but you enter through the Gapyeong dock.
  • Gapyeong's pine nuts are in trouble. According to a February 2025 Financial News report, the county's harvest fell from 3,865 tonnes in 2016 to 127 tonnes in 2019, recovered to 335 tonnes in 2022 and dropped to 25 tonnes in 2023. The Gyeonggi Forest Environment Research Institute identified a sap-sucking pine bug in 2020 as a main cause, and heat waves have made it worse. Pine-nut dishes are still served, but the nuts are scarcer and dearer than they used to be.

What should you see in Gapyeong?

Nami Island, Petite France, the Garden of Morning Calm and the Gapyeong Rail Bike are the four big draws; Jarasum and Cheongpyeong Lake fill the gaps. They are spread out, so pick two or three for a day.

⛴️
Nami Island
Tree-lined river island reached by a five-minute ferry from Gapyeong. Technically in Chuncheon.
🌹
Petite France & Italian Village
Little Prince-themed village above Cheongpyeong Lake, opened in 2008, with a Pinocchio-themed neighbor.
🌷
Garden of Morning Calm
Private garden opened in 1996 with 20 themed gardens; lit up on winter evenings.
🚲
Gapyeong Rail Bike
8 km round trip on the old Gyeongchun Line, over a high river bridge to Gyeonggang Station.
🎷
Jarasum
River islands next to Gapyeong town; home of the Jarasum Jazz Festival every October.

Nami Island. The island appeared when the Cheongpyeong Dam raised the river in 1944, and is named after General Nami, a Joseon commander executed at 28 on a false treason charge in King Yejong’s reign. Its metasequoia lane became famous after Winter Sonata was filmed here in 2002. Ferries leave the Gapyeong dock every 10–20 minutes in the daytime, from 08:00 until the last boat at 21:00, and the island never closes. In peak seasons (spring blossoms, summer holidays, autumn leaves) the operator extends the schedule. Our Gapyeong day-trip planner covers how long to spend there.

Petite France & Italian Village (Hoban-ro 1063). A French-themed village on the hillside over Cheongpyeong Lake, built in 2008 around The Little Prince: a Saint-Exupéry memorial hall, a music box house, and French-style houses that have appeared in a long list of dramas. The café on site is known from Beethoven Virus. Next door, the Italian Village (“Pinocchio & Da Vinci”) adds marionette shows and Venetian mask workshops. In 2026 the two villages are running official events for the 140th anniversary of Korea–France diplomatic relations, and both were remodeled this year.

Garden of Morning Calm (Sumogwon-ro 432, Sang-myeon). Designed by horticulture professor Han Sang-kyeong of Sahmyook University and opened in May 1996, it sits in a valley below Chungnyeongsan. Twenty themed gardens hold more than 5,000 plant species, including over 300 native to Baekdusan; the sunken garden is laid out to echo the Korean peninsula. In winter the garden is lit up after dark for its lighting festival. It is open every day of the year.

Gapyeong Rail Bike (Jangteo-gil 14, Gapyeong-eup). Electric, pedal-assisted rail bikes run 8 km out and back on the disused Gyeongchun Line track, from a boarding station beside the Gapyeong five-day market to old Gyeonggang Station. On the way you cross the Bukhangang railway bridge high above the river and pass through a zelkova tunnel (best in autumn) and a cherry-blossom tunnel (spring). The last run of the day is the “Starlight Bike,” with lights along the track. Six departures a day; book ahead in May and October. Our rail bike timetable guide builds a day around the first run.

Jarasum and Cheongpyeong. Jarasum is a cluster of low river islands next to Gapyeong town, with a campground, flower fields and the stages of the Jarasum Jazz Festival. The 23rd edition ran on October 9–11, 2026, with France as the focus country. Cheongpyeong, the town before Gapyeong on the line, sits on Cheongpyeong Lake and is where the county’s water-ski and wakeboard jetties cluster in summer.

Where do locals eat in Gapyeong?

At makguksu houses and pine-nut tofu restaurants, not at the dakgalbi strips by the ferry. Dakgalbi, spicy stir-fried chicken, is Chuncheon’s dish; it lines the roads near the Nami dock because that’s where the tour buses stop. Gapyeong’s own everyday lunch is 막국수 makguksu, buckwheat noodles served cold in broth or with chili sauce, and its special-occasion food is anything made with pine nuts. If you want dakgalbi anyway, our dakgalbi guide explains how to order.

Songwon Makguksu (Gahwa-ro 76-1, Gapyeong-eup) — The Gapyeong-eup noodle house that tops most local lists. A short menu: makguksu (with a larger size), boiled pork belly to share, and makgeolli. It is in town, so it pairs well with the rail bike.

📍 Open in Naver Map

Dume Makguksu (Gahwa-ro 33, Gapyeong-eup) — On the same road, toward the mouth of Yongchu Valley. You sit on the floor inside or outdoors with a river view. The house style is to mix the chili sauce, sugar and sesame oil into the noodles first, then pour in the broth. Korea Tourism Organization data (updated July 2026) lists it as open daily, 11:00–14:30 only, so come for lunch.

📍 Open in Naver Map

Cheongha Garden Makguksu (Cheonggun-ro 36, Cheongpyeong-myeon) — Open since August 1992, about five minutes’ walk from Cheongpyeong Station and terminal. The buckwheat dough is made in house and the broth is 동치미 dongchimi, radish water kimchi. In autumn and winter the kitchen hand-makes dumplings with Gapyeong pine nuts. KTO data (updated September 2026): 10:00–19:00 with a break 15:30–16:30, last order 18:30, closed Mondays.

Songwon pine-nut tofu (Sumogwon-ro 72, Sang-myeon) — A different restaurant from Songwon Makguksu, on the road up to the Garden of Morning Calm. The menu is built around tofu made with Gapyeong pine nuts: a pine-nut tofu and mushroom hot pot with barley rice, soft pine-nut tofu, and blocks of tofu to take home. It’s the natural lunch before an afternoon in the garden.

What does a day in Gapyeong look like?

Timing tips

Avoid weekends in May and October if you can. The Rail Park lists both months as peak season, Nami Island extends its ferries for spring blossoms and autumn leaves, and the riverside roads back to Seoul slow to a crawl on weekend afternoons. A weekday train beats any car.

Winter is better than it sounds. The Garden of Morning Calm and Petite France both run light festivals through the cold months; our first-snow day-trip comparison sets Nami Island and the garden side by side.

Treat Nami and Chuncheon as one trip. The ITX continues 20 minutes past Gapyeong to Chuncheon, the home of dakgalbi; see our Chuncheon and Gangwon day-trip guide.
