Pocheon has spent most of its history being dug up or flooded over. Its granite, sold as 포천석 Pocheon-seok, was cut out of hillsides for decades and left behind raw cliffs; one of those quarries is now the county’s best-known art park. Further north, the Hantan River runs through a gorge cut into basalt, the remains of lava that poured south from what is now North Korea. That gorge is part of a UNESCO Global Geopark.
The food has a story too. In Idong-myeon, near the mountains on the Gangwon border, galbi houses have been grilling marinated beef ribs since the early 1960s, and “Idong galbi” became a name every Korean knows. Pocheon is not a city you walk around. It is a big, rural county that rewards a day of driving, or a careful day of buses.
The short answer
- Where: northeast of Seoul, past Uijeongbu, bordering Gangwon-do. By car, the Guri–Pocheon Expressway runs into the county; by public transport, intercity buses leave Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, and Line 1 reaches Soyosan Station near the Herb Island side.
- Best for: people with a car, families, and anyone who wants landscape rather than city streets.
- Must-see: Pocheon Art Valley, a former granite quarry with a spring-fed lake, and the Hantan River gorge at Bidulginang Falls.
- Must-eat: Idong galbi in Idong-myeon. Pocheon Art Valley closes on the first Tuesday of the month and Herb Island on Wednesdays, so check the day.
How do you get to Pocheon from Seoul?
By car if you can; otherwise choose one corner of the county and commit to it. Pocheon is large, and the sights sit 20 to 40 minutes’ drive apart. The three practical options from Seoul:
🚌 Seoul to Pocheon: the main options
| Route | From Seoul | Approx. time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car | Guri–Pocheon Expressway; Sinbuk IC for Art Valley and Herb Island | About 1 hr from northern Seoul to the Hantan River area (Edaily) | The easiest way to combine sights; the National Arboretum requires a parking booking |
| Intercity bus | Dong Seoul Bus Terminal (Gangbyeon Station, Line 2) to Pocheon / Sinbuk | 1 hr 10 min–1 hr 40 min, traffic-dependent | For Art Valley, get off at Sinbuk-myeon Administrative Welfare Center; then bus 73, a 5-minute taxi or a 30-minute walk |
| Line 1 + bus | Line 1 to Soyosan Station, then bus 57 or 57-1 | Long; allow 2 hrs or more | Herb Island’s own page lists five runs of bus 57 and seven of 57-1 in each direction |
The last mile is the hard part. Pocheon Art Valley’s FAQ says bus 73 from the Sinbuk-myeon stop is just one stop away, but it comes every 130 minutes on weekdays and 150 on weekends; a taxi costs about 5,000 won for the 2.2 km. The intercity bus range in the table comes from our Gyeonggi day-trip comparison, which explains why Pocheon is the slowest of the six cities it covers. If you are not driving, a regional car with driver can make sense for a group; if you are, read renting a car in Korea as a foreigner first.
What is Pocheon known for?
Stone, lava and beef. Pocheon granite was quarried across the county, and the scars are everywhere along the main roads. The former quarry at Sinbuk-myeon was worked from 1971 to 2002, according to a 2014 Seoul Shinmun report, then turned into Pocheon Art Valley between 2004 and 2009. The cut rock walls, about 80 m high, now drop straight into a lake.
Why the Hantan River looks like that
- Lava erupted from volcanoes in the Pyeonggang–Cheorwon area, now mostly in North Korea, and flowed down the old river valley. The Jeongok Prehistory Museum dates the main lava layers to about 500,000 and 170,000 years ago.
- As it cooled, the basalt cracked into vertical columns called 주상절리 jusangjeolli. The river then cut back down through it, leaving a deep, narrow gorge with black walls.
- The Hantan River was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2020. The park covers parts of Pocheon, Yeoncheon and Cheorwon.
- In Idong-myeon, 이동갈비 Idong galbi houses began opening in the early 1960s. The name spread in the 1980s, Korea Tourism Organization notes, after hikers coming down from Gungmangbong peak ate there.
The third Pocheon is the forest. The Gwangneung forest around the Korea National Arboretum was protected after King Sejo chose it for his tomb in the 15th century, and it has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2010. The royal tomb itself is just over the line in Namyangju; the arboretum’s address is Soheul-eup, Pocheon.
What should you see in Pocheon?
Art Valley and the Hantan River gorge are the two reasons to come; the rest depends on the season.
Pocheon Art Valley (Sinbuk-myeon, Artvalley-ro 234) — From the ticket office it is about 500 m uphill to the lake, roughly 15 minutes on foot, or you can take the monorail. Cheonjuho is the flooded pit of the quarry, filled with clear water and walled by the cut granite. Above it are a sculpture park, a small art museum that is free with your ticket, and an astronomy science center, also free. Wear proper shoes: the park’s own notice warns about the steep paths. On Saturdays it stays open until 22:00.
Hantan River gorge: Bidulginang Falls and the bridges (Yeongbuk-myeon) — Bidulginang Falls drops into a pocket of basalt columns; the name means “pigeon pouch”, after the hollow shape or the rock doves that nested in its caves. It was designated a Natural Monument in 2012, and the gorge around it has been a filming location for many historical dramas. From the falls, the Hantan Sky Bridge (200 m, opened 2018) crosses the gorge about 50 m above the water, and the Y-shaped suspension bridge, opened in September 2024, is described as Korea’s longest at 410 m. The 6 km loop that links the falls, the Sky Bridge and the Meonguri canyon takes about two hours. The Hantan River Geopark Center next to the falls explains the geology; it is closed on Tuesdays.
Terra Fantasia (Bidulginang-gil 191) — Pocheon opened this night walk in full on July 3, 2026. The 2.5 km route runs from the Sky Bridge through the old garden-festival grounds to the Y-shaped bridge, with lighting along the way and a projection show, “Volcano of Light”, on a basalt cliff about 50 m high. Edaily’s reporter clocked the walk at about an hour and a half. It is a night-only attraction and closes on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Sanjeong Lake (Yeongbuk-myeon, Sanjeonghosu-ro 402) — An irrigation reservoir built in 1925 and designated a national tourist site in 1977. A path loops the lake under the cliffs of Myeongseongsan; entry is free and parking for a small car is 2,000 won. In autumn hikers go up Myeongseongsan for its silver grass. The 2026 Silver Grass Festival ran October 16–18, so expect crowds on October weekends.
Herb Island (Sinbuk-myeon, Cheongsin-ro 947beon-gil 51) — A private herb park that opened in 1998, with a herb plant museum, a Santa village, a Venice-themed corner and a light festival every evening. It is more theme park than garden, and children tend to enjoy it more than adults. Closed on Wednesdays except public holidays.
Korea National Arboretum (Soheul-eup, Gwangneungsumogwon-ro 509) — The quietest sight here, and the most rule-bound. Drivers must book parking in advance; if you arrive by bus or taxi, you can buy a ticket at the gate until the daily cap is reached. The forest museum inside is closed for renovation until December 31, 2026, according to a newsWA report.

And Pocheon is also home to Idong makgeolli, named after the same township as the galbi. For a hot soak, Ildong Jeil Sulfur Hot Spring has drawn mineral water from 800 m underground since 1996; adult entry is 10,000 won.
Where do locals eat in Pocheon?
In Idong-myeon for galbi, and wherever the sightseeing takes you for noodles and soup. Hours below are from each restaurant’s Korea Tourism Organization listing, updated in 2025–2026; we have left out prices because no recent official source lists them.
Idong Neutinamu Galbi (Idong-myeon, Hwadong-ro 2089) — In the middle of the Idong Galbi Village, with a zelkova tree said to be over 400 years old growing above the roof. The restaurant says it has kept the same spot for more than 60 years; its current business licence dates from 1987. Order the saeng-galbi (unmarinated rib) to taste the beef, then the marinated Idong galbi, and finish with buckwheat noodles in cold dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth. Open 10:00–20:00 daily.
Idong Pokpo Galbi (Idong-myeon, Yeougogae-ro 698) — Open since 1995, up the valley toward the Gangwon border, with a stream on one side and a waterfall on the other. The marinade is made in-house, and the restaurant is big enough for family gatherings, which is what fills it on weekends. Galbi-tang (short-rib soup) is the lighter lunch. Open 11:00–20:00 daily, last order 19:00.
Jijangsan Makguksu (Gwanin-myeon, Changdong-ro 895) — A buckwheat-noodle house that has served one main dish since 1966, less than 2 km from Bidulginang Falls. Have the makguksu cold, either in broth or bibim (with spicy sauce), with a buckwheat pancake. It is the natural lunch stop on a Hantan River day. Open 08:00–18:20 daily.
Yennal Jeontong Doenjangjip (Yeongbuk-myeon, Sanjeonghosu-ro 374) — “The old-fashioned soybean paste house”, just below Sanjeong Lake, licensed since 1989. The owner ferments the house doenjang in rows of crocks, and the morning beef-and-radish soup is made once a day and stops when it runs out. It opens at 05:30 for early hikers and closes at 15:30, and it is closed on Mondays.
Dongi Son Mandu (Soheul-eup, Gwangneungsumogwon-ro 700-5) — A handmade-dumpling house on the road to the National Arboretum. The mandu jeongol is a shared hotpot of dumplings stuffed with tofu, kimchi and mushrooms in beef broth. Open 11:00–20:00 with a short break at 15:00–15:30.

What is a good one-day route in Pocheon?
With a car, follow the lava north. This route runs from south to north and ends with galbi.
- 09:30 — Pocheon Art Valley. Walk up to Cheonjuho before the tour groups arrive and take the monorail down (about 1.5 hours).
- 11:30 — Drive north to Bidulginang Falls (roughly half an hour). See the falls, then cross the Y-shaped bridge or walk part of the gorge loop.
- 13:00 — Lunch at Jijangsan Makguksu, a few minutes' drive from the falls.
- 14:30 — Sanjeong Lake. Walk the lakeside path; in October, climb toward the silver grass if your legs allow.
- 17:00 — Idong Galbi Village for an early dinner, then head back to Seoul before the Sunday-evening traffic.
- Alternative: on Wednesday to Sunday evenings, stay on in the gorge for Terra Fantasia and eat galbi for lunch instead.
Timing tips
- Check the closing day of each sight: Art Valley on the first Tuesday of the month, the Y-shaped bridge and Geopark Center on Tuesdays, Herb Island on Wednesdays, Terra Fantasia on Mondays and Tuesdays, the arboretum on Mondays. Thursday to Saturday is the safest window.
- Autumn is peak season. October brings silver grass at Sanjeong Lake and color in the gorge, and heavy traffic on weekends. Our 2026 fall foliage guide has the timing.
- Winter: the arboretum also closes on Sundays from December to February. A sulfur hot spring is a good way to warm up; our jjimjilbang and onsen ticket guide covers how entry works.
