Gyeongbokgung hanbok rental price lists are almost universally split into four tiers: 1 hour · 2 hours · 4 hours · all-day. The question every counter hears most: “How many hours is enough?” To answer with numbers instead of hunches, I compared the hourly pricing of 28 shops around Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon and layered on the real-world time costs of changing and transit.
The Short Answer
- The default is 4 hours. The upgrade from 2h to 4h costs a median of 5,000 won across most shops. Almost no reason not to.
- A 4-hour rental gives you roughly 3 hours 30 minutes of actual wear time — minus 20–30 minutes for changing and hair, and 15 minutes for the return walk.
- All-day upgrades vary wildly by shop. Some charge as little as +8,000 won; others charge exactly double.
- The only case where a 2-hour rental makes sense: photos inside Gyeongbokgung, nothing else.
Why is 4 hours the default?
Because the cost of going from 2 hours to 4 hours is practically negligible. When you pair up the 2-hour and 4-hour prices for the same tier across all 28 shops, the overwhelming majority clock an upgrade fee of 5,000 won.
📊 2h → 4h upgrade fee (same tier, representative sample)
| Shop | 2h | 4h | Upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gungganeunyeou (Trendy) | 16,000 won | 20,000 won | +4,000 won |
| Haewadal Hanbok (Traditional) | 9,900 won | 15,000 won | +5,100 won |
| Chamhanbok (Normal) | 15,000 won | 20,000 won | +5,000 won |
| In Korea Hanbok (Traditional) | 15,000 won | 20,000 won | +5,000 won |
| Hanbok Sonyeo (Traditional) | 10,000 won | 20,000 won | +10,000 won |
| Geunalgeuhanbok (Premium) | 30,000 won | 50,000 won | +20,000 won |
Most shops: 5,000 won. A few: 10,000 won. Outliers: 20,000 won. Five thousand won is roughly the price of a café coffee, and it doubles your time. Unless you have a very specific reason, 4 hours is the call.
How much actual wear time do you get on a 4-hour rental?
The clock often starts at payment, not the moment you receive the outfit. That is where time leaks out.
Tips
- 0:00–0:25 Choosing an outfit · changing · hair styling (add extra wait time on peak weekends)
- 0:25–3:15 Actual wear time — one lap of Gyeongbokgung + Bukchon or Samcheong-dong stroll
- 3:15–3:30 Walk back from the palace interior or Bukchon hill to the shop (about 15 min)
- 3:30–4:00 Return · change back · collect belongings
In practice, a 4-hour rental gives you roughly 3 hours of photo-and-stroll time. Run the same math on a 2-hour rental and actual wear time shrinks to about 1 hour. A proper walk through Gyeongbokgung alone takes 1–1.5 hours, so a 2-hour rental only works if your plan is “a few photos inside the palace and straight back.”
Is an all-day rental worth it? — It depends entirely on the shop
This is the core of the article. There is no general answer to “is the all-day pass a good deal.” The gap between a 4-hour and all-day rental varies so wildly by shop that one rule cannot cover them all.
📊 4h → All-day price gap — same tier comparison
| Shop (Tier) | 4h | All-Day | Upgrade | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chamhanbok (Normal) | 20,000 won | 25,000 won | +5,000 won | 1.25x |
| Seohwa Hanbok · One Day Hanbok (All tiers) | 24,000 won | 32,000 won | +8,000 won | 1.33x |
| Hanbok Town (Royal) | 70,000 won | 80,000 won | +10,000 won | 1.14x |
| Hanbok Sonyeo (Traditional) | 20,000 won | 30,000 won | +10,000 won | 1.50x |
| Oneul Haru Hanbok (Traditional) | 20,000 won | 35,000 won | +15,000 won | 1.75x |
| Gounsol Hanbok (Traditional) | 15,000 won | 30,000 won | +15,000 won | 2.00x |
| Ari Hanbok (Traditional) | 45,000 won | 100,000 won | +55,000 won | 2.22x |
Background
The question is not "is the all-day pass good" — it is "what is the gap at the shop I am going to?" If the upgrade is 10,000 won or less, it is generally worth it. If it doubles the price, there is no reason to upgrade. Four hours already covers Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, and Samcheong-dong fully. Interestingly, the narrower gaps tend to be on higher-tier outfits, and the wider gaps on the lowest tiers — the cheaper the outfit, the steeper the relative all-day premium.
Which duration fits which itinerary?
| Itinerary | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Photos inside Gyeongbokgung only | 1–2 hours | Short return walk. Enough if you are just targeting the Changing Ceremony (20 min). |
| Gyeongbokgung + Bukchon or Samcheong-dong | 4 hours | The most common combo and the standard. Transit time factored in with room to spare. |
| Gyeongbokgung + Bukchon + Insa-dong, with a meal | All-day | Sitting down for a meal erases one hour instantly. If the upgrade is 10,000 won or less, go all-day. |
| Couple or family photoshoot | 4 hours + higher tier | Spending on the outfit tier makes more difference to the results than more hours. |
| Summer midday · deep winter | 2–4 hours | Hanbok has many layers — perceived temperature runs higher or lower than actual. All-day drains stamina fast. |
Tips
- 10:00–noon is peak congestion. Shifting to 14:00 or later noticeably shortens the changing-room queue.
- Use 30 minutes before your return deadline as your turnaround time. Extension fees are almost always pricier than booking a longer duration upfront.
- Check the shop's closing time first. 11 of 28 shops close before 18:30 — start late in the afternoon and even an all-day pass gives you only a few hours of actual use.
- Before paying, ask: "When does the clock start?" Some shops start counting from the moment you receive the outfit.
