Ongjin-gun’s county office is not on an island. It stands on Maesohol-ro in Michuhol-gu, on the Incheon mainland, while the county it runs is nothing but islands, spread over a strip of the Yellow Sea that runs from Yeongheungdo, a bridge away from Ansan, to Baengnyeongdo, about 10 km from North Korea’s Hwanghae Province and four hours from Incheon by fast ferry.
Even the name points north. Ongjin was a county of Hwanghae Province; when the 1953 armistice left its mainland peninsula in North Korea, the islands that stayed in the South kept the name. Later the islands off Bucheon joined them, and in 1995 the whole county became part of Incheon. For a visitor, Ongjin is really several trips: mudflats and pine-backed beaches an hour or two from Seoul by road, a short ferry to Deokjeokdo or Jawoldo, and a long sea crossing to the border islands, where the cliffs, sand dunes and buckwheat noodles are like nothing on the mainland.
The short answer
- Where: Incheon's islands in the Yellow Sea, from Yeongheungdo near Ansan to Baengnyeongdo near the North Korean coast. Ferries leave from Incheon Port Coastal Passenger Terminal in Jemulpo-gu and from Bangameori on Daebudo.
- Without a boat: Seonjaedo and Yeongheungdo by road via Daebudo, and Sindo, Sido and Modo over the Sindo Peace Bridge from Yeongjong Island, open since July 14, 2026.
- By ferry: Deokjeokdo in about 1 h 10 min on the fast boat; Baengnyeongdo in 3 h 40 min to 4 h.
- Must-see: Mokseom's low-tide sand path off Seonjaedo for a day trip; Dumujin's cliffs on Baengnyeongdo if you have two nights.
- Must-eat: seafood from the Yeongheung fisheries co-op market, and on the border islands, Baengnyeong-style buckwheat noodles and sea-urchin kalguksu.
Which Ongjin island should you pick?
Pick by how much time you have. The county’s seven townships (면 myeon) are Bukdo, Yeonpyeong, Baengnyeong, Daecheong, Deokjeok, Jawol and Yeongheung. Incheon now counts 197 islands within the city, 40 of them inhabited, Kyeongin Ilbo reported after a September 2026 survey; most visitors see only a handful of Ongjin’s. This table is the short version.
🏝️ Ongjin's main islands by travel effort (Ongjin-gun island pages and ferry information, Incheon City; Oct 2026)
| Island | How you get there | Time from the mainland | Best for | Stay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seonjaedo & Yeongheungdo | Road via Daebudo; red bus 790 | Bus about 2 h from Ongjin County Office | Mokseom sand path, mudflats, beaches | Day trip |
| Sindo, Sido & Modo | Sindo Peace Bridge from Yeongjong | Short drive from Unseo Station | Cycling loop, Sugi Beach, sculpture park | Day trip |
| Deokjeokdo | Ferry from Incheon or Bangameori | About 1 h 10 min to 1 h 50 min | Seopori Beach, Bijobong hike | 1 night |
| Jawoldo | Ferry from Incheon or Bangameori | Up to about 1 h 50 min | Janggol Beach, camping | Day trip or 1 night |
| Baengnyeongdo & Daecheongdo | Ferry from Incheon | 3 h 40 min to 4 h | Cliffs, dunes, border history | 2 nights |
Yeonpyeongdo, the blue-crab island near the maritime border, is also in Ongjin. North Korea shelled it on November 23, 2010, eight months after the navy corvette Cheonan sank near Baengnyeongdo; our Korea in the 2010s covers both.
Ongjin in six dates
- 1953 — the armistice leaves the Ongjin peninsula of Hwanghae Province in North Korea; the islands to the south stay in the South under the old county name.
- 1973 — Deokjeok and the islands of today's Jawol-myeon, until then part of Bucheon County, join Ongjin.
- 1995 — on March 1, Ongjin-gun moves from Gyeonggi Province to Incheon.
- 2001 — Yeongheung Bridge opens on November 15, linking Yeongheungdo to Seonjaedo and Daebudo.
- July 14, 2026 — the Sindo Peace Bridge links Sindo, Sido and Modo to Yeongjong Island.
- July 20, 2026 — night sailings are allowed for the first time on the routes to the five West Sea islands.
How do you get to the Ongjin islands from Seoul?
First get to the right departure point; there are four. Most boats leave from Incheon Port Coastal Passenger Terminal (인천항연안여객터미널) at Yeonanbudu-ro 70 in Jemulpo-gu, a short taxi ride from Incheon Station. Some Deokjeok and Jawol boats leave from Bangameori pier on Daebudo, which belongs to Ansan in Gyeonggi-do. Seonjaedo, Yeongheungdo and Sindo need no boat at all.
🚇 Seoul to Ongjin's departure points (Ongjin-gun transport pages, Incheon City, Korea Tourism Organization; Oct 2026)
| Going to | From Seoul | Approx. time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incheon Port Coastal Passenger Terminal | Line 1 to Incheon Station, then taxi | About 60–80 min to Incheon Station | For Baengnyeong, Daecheong, Yeonpyeong, Deokjeok, Jawol |
| Bangameori pier, Daebudo | Line 4 or Suin-Bundang Line to Oido, then a bus to Daebudo | Varies | Ongjin-gun lists buses 123, 300 and 790; for Deokjeok, Jawol, Ijak, Seungbong |
| Seonjaedo & Yeongheungdo | Oido Station, then red bus 790 | Bus about 2 h end to end, 05:00–21:10 | The bus starts at Ongjin County Office in Michuhol-gu |
| Sindo, Sido & Modo | AREX all-stop to Unseo, then taxi over the bridge | A little under 1 h to Unseo | Free bridge; weekend queues since it opened |
At the coastal terminal, parking costs 10,000 won per 24 hours, according to the Korea Tourism Organization’s listing; tour buses cannot enter the car park. Leave time for lunch at the baendaengi and seafood restaurants of Yeonan Pier, covered in our Jemulpo-gu guide.

On the day we checked Ongjin-gun’s live ferry page, the Baengnyeong boats left Incheon at 08:30 and 12:30, and the first Deokjeok boat at 08:00. Times change with the season, and replacement ships run when a vessel is in maintenance, so check the county page or the operator the day before. Tickets are sold through the Korea Shipping Association’s booking site, island.haewoon.co.kr, and at the terminal.
Practical tip
- Bring your passport. Incheon City states that photo ID is required to board.
- Discounts are for residents. Incheon residents pay a bus-level 1,500 won one way under the Incheon Sea Pass. Kyeongin Ilbo reported that the 70% support for residents of other Korean regions was suspended on July 25, 2026 when the year's budget ran out. Foreign visitors pay the regular fare; Travie magazine put the regular Baengnyeong round trip at about 140,000 won on average in September 2025.
- Book the border islands early. Bus-level fares for residents have drawn more visitors, and the operator holds back 60 seats per trip on the Baengnyeong route for islanders (Asia Economy, September 2025).
Do Ongjin ferries get cancelled?
Yes, often enough to plan around. Fog and strong wind are the usual reasons, and the long northern route suffers most.
Kyeongin Ilbo and Financial News reported the 71 days in July 2026. Until then, ships to Baengnyeong, Daecheong, Socheong and the two Yeonpyeong islands could only sail from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, a security rule in place for 39 years; a morning fog often meant no boat at all, even when it lifted by noon. Since July 20, 2026 the window runs from three hours before sunrise to three hours after sunset, with each night sailing approved case by case. The fog figures come from the Incheon Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, quoted by Kyeonggi Ilbo in March 2026: spring is the worst season. Summer storms can close most routes at once, as on July 14, 2026, when YTN reported 13 Incheon routes restricted.
What that means for you: for Baengnyeongdo, book two nights and keep the day after your return free. For Deokjeokdo or Jawoldo, a cancellation usually costs a few hours rather than a day, but carry enough cash and medicine for an unplanned extra night. Ongjin is not a layover destination; the one exception is Sindo, a short drive over the new bridge from the airport side of Yeongjong, and our Yeongjong-gu guide has the layover time budget.
What is Ongjin-gun known for?
Islands, tidal flats and the border. Ongjin is Incheon’s frontier in two senses. Its southern islands are a weekend escape for the capital region, with mudflats for clam digging, pine groves over sandy beaches and, on Yeongheungdo, a fisheries co-op market at Jindu port. Its northern islands, the 서해5도 Seohae 5-do or “five West Sea islands”, sit along the maritime line with North Korea; Marine Corps bases, wire fences on the beaches and memorials are part of the landscape.
The county kept its name and borders in the July 1, 2026 reorganization of Incheon, but its gateways changed districts: the coastal terminal is now in Jemulpo-gu (formerly Jung-gu), and Yeongjong Island, where the Sindo bridge starts, is now Yeongjong-gu. Older blogs and some signs still give the terminal’s address as Jung-gu. Island food is built from the sea and from scarcity: on Baengnyeongdo, 까나리액젓 kkanari aekjeot, a sauce of fermented sand lance, long stood in for soy sauce, and it seasons the island’s cold noodles.
What should you see in Ongjin?
Seonjaedo and Yeongheungdo — From the Sihwa seawall the road crosses Daebudo, then Seonjae Bridge (2000) to Seonjaedo and Yeongheung Bridge (2001) to Yeongheungdo. Off Seonjae-ri lies Mokseom, an uninhabited islet joined to the shore by a sand path about 500 m long that appears at low tide; CNN named it Korea’s most beautiful island in 2013, Seoul Shinmun noted. Walk it only around low tide, and check the tide table before you set out. On Yeongheungdo, Ongjin-gun describes Simnipo Beach as about 1 km of fine sand and pebbles, backed by a protected grove of roughly 150-year-old pines; at night you can see the lights of Incheon and the airport across the water.
Sindo, Sido and Modo (Bukdo-myeon) — For half a century these islands were a ferry ride from Sammok pier on Yeongjong. The Sindo Peace Bridge, 3.26 km long, free and open around the clock to cars, cyclists and walkers, changed that on July 14, 2026. A road of about 16 km runs across all three islands, newsWA reported in August 2026: Sugi Beach on Sido, the only beach on the three islands, and at the southern tip of Modo the Baemikkumi Sculpture Park, with iron figures by artist Lee Il-ho and planes from Incheon Airport passing behind them (adult admission 2,000 won, per newsWA). Popularity has outrun the roads: Kyeongin Ilbo reported hour-long queues and full car parks on the first holiday weekend, and island roads too narrow for large buses. Come on a weekday, or by bicycle. The fourth island of the township, Jangbongdo, is still reached only by ferry from Sammok.
Deokjeokdo — The main island of a group of 8 inhabited and 34 uninhabited islands. Ongjin-gun calls Seopori Beach a national tourist site, about 3 km of sand backed by pines more than a century old, and the island’s best-known swimming beach. Bijobong (292 m), the highest point, has about five hiking routes, and the Nakjodae lookout above Seopori is the sunset spot. Batjireum Beach, with white sand and old pines, is a family beach near the Bijobong trail. Village buses, rural public buses and two private taxis are all the island’s transport, so ask your guesthouse about a pier pickup.
Jawoldo — A small island between Incheon and Deokjeok. Janggol Beach, about 1 km south of the pier, is roughly 1 km of fine sand with a campsite, showers, toilets and a car park, Ongjin-gun says. At Keunmal Beach, by the village, the tide uncovers mudflats where people dig for clams and catch small octopus. The 160 m Guksabong has an old beacon site and a pavilion at the top. The boats from Bangameori continue to Deokjeokdo, and the Incheon boats to Ijakdo and Seungbongdo, so island-hopping is possible on the same line.
Baengnyeongdo — Korea’s northernmost island in the Yellow Sea covers about 46 km². Ongjin-gun’s highlights: Dumujin, about 4 km of sea cliffs up to roughly 50 m high, best seen from a sightseeing boat; Sagot Beach, a natural monument whose hard-packed sand was once used as a military airfield; Kongdol Beach, about 1 km of round, coloured pebbles; and the rocks where spotted seals, also a natural monument, haul out. Simcheonggak pavilion looks over the sea of the Shim Cheong folk tale, Jungwha-dong Church is one of the oldest Presbyterian churches in Korea, and a memorial faces the waters where the Cheonan sank. There are village buses, about seven taxis and rental cars on the island. Incheon Tourism’s writer found one night far too short, and many Korean visitors come on package tours with their own minibus, as Travie magazine described.
Daecheongdo — Served by the same Incheon boats as Baengnyeong and, according to Travie magazine, linked to it and Socheongdo by the small Pureun Narae ferry twice a day. Incheon Tourism describes coastlines that expose about a billion years of rock: Okjukdong Coastal Sand Dune, which it calls Korea’s only active dune, with an observation deck and a Baengnyeong–Daecheong Geopark Center opened in summer 2026; Nongyeo Beach and its upturned “tree-ring rock”; and Seopungbaji, an 80 m quartzite cliff on a 3.2 km loop from Gwangnandu Pavilion. The islands are a national geopark; their bid for UNESCO Global Geopark status stalled after North Korea objected in May 2025, Kyeonggi Ilbo reported.

Where do locals eat in Ongjin?
Island menus follow the season and the boats. Expect clams, oysters, rockfish and blue crab, kalguksu wherever there are mudflats, and, on the border islands, dishes from Hwanghae Province. The places below are listed by Ongjin-gun or the Korea Tourism Organization and had visitor posts or listing updates in 2025–2026.
Yeongheung Fisheries Co-op Seafood Market (Jindu port) — The big seafood hall at Jindu port, Yeongheung-ro 109-12. Tanks of clams, oysters, whelks, octopus, flatfish, blue crab, shrimp and webfoot octopus line both walls, much of it from the island’s own tidal flats; you buy from a stall and eat sashimi, shabu-shabu, grilled fish or spicy fish stew at the low tables in the middle. The Korea Tourism Organization listing (updated August 2026) says it is closed on Mondays and that stall hours vary. Busy at weekends.
Ppeol Dabang (Seonjaedo, Seonjae-ro 55) — Ppeol means mudflat, and this café on Seonjaedo, a short way from Mokseom, is named after them. The house drink is a mojito made with apple mint grown on site; there is also a bread made with Ongjin rice. The Korea Tourism Organization listing, updated July 2026, gives weekday hours of 10:00–18:30 and weekend hours of 10:00–19:30, open all year, and recent Polle reviews show it still busy.
Ttungine (Baengnyeongdo, Jinchon-ri) — Listed by Ongjin-gun among the island’s restaurants, in Jinchon-ri, the main village. A June 2025 visitor post recommended the oyster rice and mussel rice and warned of a short wait at lunch. Jinchon-ri is also where to look for the island’s buckwheat cold noodles.
Bada Sikdang (Daecheongdo, Daecheong-ro 13) — Ongjin-gun lists it as a model restaurant on Daecheongdo, known for 성게칼국수 sungge kalguksu (sea-urchin noodle soup) and sea-urchin bibimbap. It doubles as a guesthouse, and a hiking club’s trip report shows members ending their May 2026 Seopungbaji walk with dinner there.
Baengnyeong-style naengmyeon — The island’s cold noodles are pale and mild: high-buckwheat noodles in a beef-bone broth cut with cold dongchimi (radish water kimchi), seasoned at the table with kkanari sauce. A May 2026 essay on Brunch traces the style to Hwanghae refugees who stayed on the island after the war. Winter brings 짠지떡 jjanjitteok, a dumpling-like parcel of chopped kimchi with clams or oysters. Islanders also took the noodles to the mainland, so you can try them without the boat: see Bupyeong Makguksu in our Bupyeong-gu guide.

What does a trip to Ongjin look like?
- Day trip by road — Seonjaedo and Yeongheungdo. Line 4 to Oido, red bus 790 over the Daebudo bridges; time your arrival for low tide at Mokseom, coffee at Ppeol Dabang, then a late lunch at the Jindu co-op market before the bus back.
- Day trip from the airport side — Sindo, Sido and Modo. AREX to Unseo, taxi over the Sindo Peace Bridge, then bicycle or walk the island road to Sugi Beach and the Modo sculpture park. Avoid holiday weekends.
- One night — Deokjeokdo. A morning boat from Incheon, Bijobong in the afternoon, sunset from Nakjodae over Seopori Beach, and a morning swim or walk before the boat back.
- Two nights — Baengnyeongdo and Daecheongdo. Morning boat from Incheon; Sagot Beach, Kongdol Beach and the Dumujin boat on the first afternoon; the Pureun Narae to Daecheongdo for the dune and Seopungbaji on day two; noodles in Jinchon-ri before the boat home. Keep the next day free.
Practical tip
- Cash and backup. Small islands have few taxis (two on Deokjeokdo, about seven on Baengnyeongdo) and limited shops. Book a guesthouse that meets the boat, and carry some cash and any medicine you need.
- Driving. Rental cars are the easiest way round Baengnyeongdo and the Daebudo islands; you need an International Driving Permit. See our guide to renting a car in Korea.
- Military areas. On the border islands, follow signs, stay off fenced beaches and do not photograph bases or soldiers.
- Seasons: summer for beaches and camping (and full boats); autumn for clear air and the steadiest sailings; spring brings the most fog. Mudflats and Mokseom depend on the tide in every season.
