Most people who have been to Yeongjong Island never knew they were there. It is the island under Incheon International Airport: the runways were laid on reclaimed tidal flats between two islands, Yeongjongdo and Yongyudo, and the airport opened in 2001. Behind the terminals, though, the old island survives — fishing piers, a west coast of sandy coves that face the sunset, and, across a short bridge, Muuido, an island of hills and mudflats where one of Korea’s best-known films was set.
Since July 1, 2026 the island has its own district. Until June 30 it was the offshore half of Incheon’s Jung-gu; it is now 영종구 Yeongjong-gu, and the mainland half of the old district, with Chinatown and Wolmido, has become Jemulpo-gu. For a transit passenger with a long connection, this is the only part of Korea you can reach in half an hour.
The short answer
- Where: the airport island off Incheon's west coast. AREX from Seoul Station: about 43 minutes nonstop to Terminal 1, or about an hour on the all-stop train, which also calls at Yeongjong and Unseo stations.
- Best for: a beach and seafood day from Seoul, a resort stay, or a few hours out of the airport on a long layover.
- Must-see: Eurwangni Beach at sunset, then Hanagae Beach on Muuido at low tide.
- Must-eat: grilled clams on the Eurwangni strip and a bowl of seafood kalguksu at Masian.
- Layover rule of thumb: about 6 hours for Eurwangni, 7–8 hours for Muuido; 4 hours is not enough.
Is Yeongjong-gu the same as Jung-gu?
It is the island half of the old Jung-gu, which no longer exists. On July 1, 2026, Incheon went from two counties and eight districts to two counties and nine. Jung-gu was divided along the water: Yeongjongdo with Yongyu and Muuido became Yeongjong-gu, and the mainland neighbourhoods joined old Dong-gu as Jemulpo-gu. The new district office works from rented space in Yeongjong Haneul-dosi, the new town on the island’s east side.
Yeongjong in five dates
- 2000 — Yeongjong Bridge opens with the airport expressway, the island's first road link to the mainland.
- 2001 — Incheon International Airport opens on reclaimed land between Yeongjongdo and Yongyudo.
- 2009 — the 21.38 km Incheon Bridge links the island to Songdo.
- 2019 — Muui Bridge connects Muuido by road; the old ferry from Jamjin pier stops.
- 2026 — Cheongna Haneul Bridge opens on January 5; on July 1, the island becomes Yeongjong-gu.
Map apps updated the name in early July 2026, and road-name addresses kept their street names and numbers. Hotel confirmations, bus-stop signs and most blog posts written before July still say Jung-gu (중구) — it is the same place.
How do you get to Yeongjong from Seoul?
By AREX, the airport railway, from Seoul Station or Hongik University. Every AREX train ends at the airport; the all-stop trains also call at Yeongjong Station (for the Gu-eup Baetteo ferry pier and Haneul-dosi) and Unseo Station (for the Airport New Town hotels). The west-coast beaches are not on the railway, so plan on a taxi or bus for the last 15–30 minutes.
🚇 Seoul to Yeongjong by public transport and car (AREX, Incheon City Tour, Kyunghyang Shinmun, Star News; Oct 2026)
| Leg | Line / mode | Approx. time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seoul Station → Incheon Airport T1 | AREX express (nonstop) | About 43 min | Fastest; T2 is one stop further |
| Seoul Station → Yeongjong or Unseo | AREX all-stop | A little under 1 hour | About 1 hour to T1 |
| Terminal 1 → Yongyu (west coast) | Maglev, free | Short ride (6.1 km, 6 stations) | Reduced timetable, 10:00–17:00 about every 35 min |
| Terminal 2 → Eurwangni → Muuido entrance | Incheon City Tour, Ocean Line | 30 min, then 15 min | Hop-on bus from Songdo; closed Mon and Tue |
| Seoul City Hall → Eurwangni | Car or taxi | About 80 min (67 km) | Toll bridge; summer weekends are slow |
The airport’s maglev, which runs 6.1 km from Terminal 1 past Paradise City to Yongyu, resumed in October 2025 after a three-year halt. Kyunghyang Shinmun reported in April 2026 that it now runs as a free tourist train from 10:00 to 17:00, about every 35 minutes; check before you rely on it. The double-decker Incheon City Tour Ocean Line leaves Songdo Central Park hourly from 10:00 to 16:00, stops at Terminal 2 at ten to each hour, then Inspire, Eurwangni, the Muuido turn-off and Paradise City before returning to Songdo.
Drivers have three bridges: Yeongjong Bridge from the Seoul side, Incheon Bridge from Songdo, and the new Cheongna Haneul Bridge from Cheongna. Herald Corporation reported the new bridge’s toll at 1,000 to 4,400 won by vehicle size, with cars registered in Incheon crossing free since April 6, 2026. From the mainland side of Incheon there is also a car ferry from Wolmido to Gu-eup Baetteo; a June 2026 travel blog put the crossing at about 20 minutes, hourly, with the last boat at 17:30. Confirm with the operator before you go.
A fourth bridge leads further out. The 3.26 km Sindo Peace Bridge, opened on July 14, 2026, carries two lanes plus paths for walkers and cyclists from Yeongjong to Sindo, Sido and Modo in Ongjin-gun’s Bukdo-myeon, islands that until then were reachable only by ferry from Sammok pier. Seoul Shinmun and Kyeonggi Ilbo reported that it is toll-free and open 24 hours, and Kyeongin Ilbo reported heavy weekend traffic and full beach car parks on the islands right after it opened, so avoid summer weekends if you are driving. For the three islands, see our Ongjin-gun guide.
Can you visit Yeongjong on a layover?
Yes, if you have about six hours between flights and can enter Korea. The island’s beaches are closer to the terminals than any part of Seoul, but the fixed costs are the same: immigration on the way out, and being back at check-in and security in good time on the way back. Use this budget before you decide.
⏱️ Layover time budget for Yeongjong (Incheon Airport transit pages, Incheon City Tour timetable, Asiana Airlines; Oct 2026)
| Step | Time to allow | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Deplane, immigration, bag storage | 45–90 min | Our estimate; queues vary by hour and terminal |
| Terminal → Eurwangni, Seonnyeo Bawi or Masian | 20–30 min | City Tour timetable: T2 to Eurwangni 30 min, with a stop at Inspire |
| Terminal → Hanagae Beach, Muuido | 40 min or more | City Tour timetable: Eurwangni to the Muuido turn-off 15 min; the beach is further in |
| Return to the terminal | Same as the outward trip, plus waiting for a taxi | Taxis are easy at the terminals, harder at quiet beaches |
| Back at check-in and security | 2 hours before departure | Asiana asks passengers to arrive 2 hours early; its Incheon counters close 50 min before departure |
✈️ What each layover length buys you (estimate from the budget above)
| Layover | Time on the island | Realistic plan |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 hours | Less than an hour | Stay airside; see our 4-hour plan |
| About 6 hours | 1.5–2 hours | Eurwangni or Masian: a walk on the sand and a meal |
| 7–8 hours | 2.5–3.5 hours | Hanagae Beach on Muuido, or Eurwangni plus a resort spa |
| 10 hours or overnight | Half a day or more | Muuido and the Eurwangni sunset, then a hotel near the terminals |
Entry rules. Leaving the airport means entering Korea like any other visitor. Depending on your nationality you need a K-ETA or a visa — check our K-ETA rules by nationality and the Korea entry guide. If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you only carry what you take off the plane; otherwise use the storage counters in the arrivals hall.
The airport’s own transit tours. Incheon Airport’s free and low-cost transit tours run in 2026 for foreign transit passengers with a layover of 24 hours or less. Register at the transit tour desk on the arrivals floor (Terminal 1 near Gates 1 and 2; Terminal 2 opposite Exit 4) with your passport and both boarding passes, at least 30 minutes before the start. None of the current courses stays on Yeongjong’s beaches; the closest is the free four-hour “Fun with the Seagulls” course (Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, 09:00–13:00), which takes the ferry from Gu-eup Baetteo and visits Wolmi Park. Segye Ilbo reported that until December 31, 2026, transit passengers who book Incheon tours through the k-stopover.com site get a 100-dollar discount.
For hour-by-hour plans see our Incheon layover guide for 4, 8 or 24 hours, and for a bed between flights, Incheon Airport transit hotels.
What is Yeongjong known for?
The airport, west-facing beaches, and seafood eaten within sight of the planes. The island’s old name was 자연도 Jayeondo, “island of purple swallows”, and the main ferry landing is still called 구읍뱃터 Gu-eup Baetteo, “old-town pier”. The east side is the airport city of today: Haneul-dosi apartment blocks, Unseo’s hotel strip for late arrivals and early departures, and two integrated resorts with casinos for foreign visitors. The west side, old Yongyudo, is where Incheon people go for the sea: Eurwangni, Wangsan, Seonnyeo Bawi and Masian, then Muuido across the bridge.
The tides set the rhythm. At low tide the west coast turns into wide mudflats where families dig for clams; at high tide the same coves are swimming beaches. The Incheon Tourism Organization’s 2026 summer list names grilled shellfish at Eurwangni and paid mudflat programmes at Masian among the island’s draws. Many visitors come for one meal: 조개구이 jogae-gui, a tray of clams, scallops and shellfish grilled at the table, or 해물칼국수 haemul kalguksu, knife-cut noodles in a seafood broth.
What should you see on Yeongjong Island?
Eurwangni Beach — The best-known beach on the island: a crescent about 700 m long, backed by pines and a row of seafood restaurants, motels and cafés. At low tide roughly 200 m of sand and mud appears, and you can dig for clams. Star News reported the 2026 swimming season as June 20 to September 6, 09:00–18:30, with parasol rental at 20,000 won. Out of season it is a sunset walk and dinner. Come on a weekday; summer weekend parking fills early.
Seonnyeo Bawi and Wangsan Beach — Just south of Eurwangni, 선녀바위 Seonnyeo Bawi (“fairy rock”) is a cove of sand, rock stacks and pines where swimming is not allowed but the sunset photographs are. North of Eurwangni, Wangsan Beach is about 500 m long and quieter, with campsites and Wangsan Marina, which offers yacht trips. Its sunset is one of the “eight views” of Yongyu.
Masian Beach — On the road from Eurwangni towards Muuido, Masian is more mudflat than beach: at low tide the sea retreats a long way. The local fishing village runs paid programmes — clam digging and cart rides across the flats — so check the tide and the programme times first. The coast road behind it is lined with seafood kalguksu places and bakery cafés.
Muuido: Hanagae Beach and Silmido — Muui Bridge, opened in 2019, turned a ferry trip into a short drive. Hanagae Beach, the island’s largest, has about 1 km of fine sand that opens onto a vast mudflat at low tide, with a sea-view boardwalk along the rocks, a zipline and ATV rentals behind the sand. Entry is free and it is open all year. Off the west coast lies Silmido, where a secret commando unit trained in the late 1960s; the 2003 film about it, Silmido, was the first Korean film to pass 10 million admissions. At low tide a sandbar links Muuido to Silmido for a few hours. The tide comes in fast here — note the times and start back early. Hikers can climb Horyonggoksan or Guksabong, and a footbridge leads to tiny Somuuido.
Paradise City and Inspire — Two integrated resorts sit near the terminals. Paradise City, a maglev stop from Terminal 1, has hotels, a casino for foreign visitors, art installations and the Cimer spa, a favourite last stop before a flight (see our layover guide). Inspire Entertainment Resort, opened in 2024, has hotels, an indoor water park, a concert arena and Aurora, a covered street with a media-art ceiling that runs seasonal shows; Hankyung reported a Santa Village programme there in winter 2025–26. Both are useful on a rainy day.
Gu-eup Baetteo — On the east coast, near Yeongjong Station, the old ferry pier faces Wolmido across the channel. Boats still cross to the mainland, and gulls follow them for the shrimp snacks passengers throw. Around the pier are a fish market where you choose seafood and eat it upstairs, a waterfront promenade with Songdo’s towers on the horizon, and the bakery that made the island’s name famous again (see below).

Where do locals eat on Yeongjong?
The island eats from the sea, and the same few dishes come up in every local recommendation: grilled clams, seafood kalguksu, cold raw-fish soup and, lately, salt bread. All of the places below had visitor reviews or recommendations in 2025–2026; prices are quoted from those posts and change often.
The Eurwangni clam-grill strip — Along the beach road, restaurant after restaurant serves 조개구이 jogae-gui: a tray of mixed clams and scallops, cooked on a charcoal grill at your table, usually with a seafood pancake and a pot of kalguksu to finish. Staff often do the grilling. A June 2026 travel blog quoted 60,000 won for a small set, which feeds two. Pick a place with a sea view and go just before sunset. For the Seoul version, see our Seoul clam BBQ survey.
Hwanghae Haemul Kalguksu (Masian, Masiran-ro 37) — A big, busy kalguksu house on the Masian coast road. The broth, made with dried pollack, comes loaded with clams, mussels and scallops, plus little twisted rice cakes; regulars add live octopus or abalone. Portions are large, so order by headcount. Weekends mean a queue; take a number at the counter.
Jo-eun Jeongol Kalguksu (Unjung-ro 84) — Where island residents go for a cheap, filling lunch: house-made noodles cooked in a bone-broth hotpot at the table, with boiled pork (bossam) on the side. A local’s August 2025 roundup and a June 2026 day-trip guide both listed the all-you-can-eat kalguksu and bossam set at 13,000 won. It closes when the ingredients run out.
Sonamu Sikdang (Jamjindo-gil 55) — On the approach to Muui Bridge, a convenient stop on the way to or from Muuido. The house set meal brings several grilled fish, clam soup, seven side dishes and multigrain rice; there is also seafood hotpot with kalguksu. The August 2025 local roundup listed the grilled-fish set at 21,000 won.
Seonnyeopung (Yongyu-seoro) — A 물회 mulhoe specialist near Seonnyeo Bawi: sliced raw fish in an icy, sweet-sour chilli broth, ordered for two or more. Reviewers rate the Yonggung mulhoe and the seafood mung-bean pancake. There are two branches close together; the first has the longer queue, and a June 2026 guide warned of waits of about an hour in season.
Jayeondo Salt Bread (Gu-eup Baetteo, Eunhasu-ro 10) — Named after the island’s old name, this bakery by the ferry pier sells one thing: buttery salt bread, in boxes of four. A June 2026 guide gave the price as 12,000 won a box and advised coming before 14:00, as it often sells out; queues form around baking times and on weekends. The pier shop is the original; there is also a branch at Eurwangni.
🍽️ Yeongjong local eats at a glance (Incheon Tourism Organization; Daum and Naver blog posts and Polle reviews, accessed 2026-10)
| Place | Area | What to order | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eurwangni clam-grill strip | Eurwangni beach road | Jogae-gui, pancake, kalguksu | Small set about 60,000 won (June 2026 blog) |
| Hwanghae Haemul Kalguksu | Masian coast road | Seafood kalguksu, add live octopus | Weekend queue; order by headcount |
| Jo-eun Jeongol Kalguksu | Unjung-ro | Unlimited kalguksu and bossam | 13,000 won; closes when sold out |
| Sonamu Sikdang | Jamjindo-gil, by Muui Bridge | Grilled-fish set, seafood hotpot | Good stop on the way to Muuido |
| Seonnyeopung | Yongyu-seoro, near Seonnyeo Bawi | Yonggung mulhoe, seafood pancake | Two branches; long summer waits |
| Jayeondo Salt Bread | Gu-eup Baetteo | Salt bread, box of four | Come before 14:00 |
What does a one-day Yeongjong route look like?
- Before you go: check the tide table for Muuido (for Silmido and the mudflats) and the sunset time for Eurwangni.
- Morning — Seoul Station. AREX all-stop to Yeongjong Station (a little under an hour), then a short taxi to Gu-eup Baetteo for salt bread and the gulls at the pier.
- Late morning — Muuido. Taxi across the island and over Muui Bridge to Hanagae Beach; walk the boardwalk, or cross to Silmido if the tide is out.
- Lunch — Sonamu Sikdang on the way back from the bridge, or seafood kalguksu at Masian.
- Afternoon — the west coast. Masian's mudflats, then Seonnyeo Bawi for the rocks and pines.
- Sunset — Eurwangni. Grilled clams facing the water, then a taxi to Terminal 1 and the AREX express back to Seoul Station (about 43 minutes).
Practical tip
- Taxis are the glue. Buses on the west coast and Muuido are infrequent; ride the train to the terminals or Unseo, then take a taxi. Out at Hanagae or Seonnyeo Bawi, call one with a ride-hailing app well before you need it.
- Tides decide the day. Mudflats, clam digging and the Silmido sandbar only work around low tide, and the water returns quickly.
- Seasons: summer for swimming (and crowds); spring and autumn for walking and clear sunsets; winter for empty beaches, clam grills and the resorts' indoor pools and spas.
- Old names: signs, menus and blogs from before July 2026 say Jung-gu (중구). Yeongjong-gu is the same island.
- Getting to Seoul afterwards: compare the train, buses and taxis in our Incheon Airport to Seoul guide.
