Until June 30, 2026, this was simply Seo-gu, “West District”, a name it had carried since it split from Buk-gu in 1988. On July 1, 2026, the district was cut in two along the Gyeongin Ara Waterway. The seven neighbourhoods north of the canal became the new Geomdan-gu, and the larger southern part took a name that faces the sea: 서해구 Seohae-gu, after the Yellow Sea, which Koreans call the West Sea.
The new name fits the half that kept it. Seohae-gu runs from the tower blocks of Cheongna International City on the coast to the 1970s and 1980s streets of Seongnam-dong and Gajeong-dong inland. In January 2026 a new sea bridge opened from Cheongna to the airport island, with an observatory 184 m above the water. Most foreign visitors only pass through on AREX between the airport and Seoul. The stops worth leaving the train for are a free national biology museum, the stadium of the 2014 Asian Games, and some of the best oyster bossam in Incheon.
The short answer
- Where: Incheon's west coast, between Gimpo and the airport island. AREX from Seoul Station to Cheongna International City or Geomam takes 34–39 minutes.
- Best for: a half day or full day of new-town parks, a sea-bridge view, a free museum for kids, and old-neighbourhood food. Mainly residential, so pick one or two areas.
- Must-see: the observatory on Cheongna Haneul Bridge (book online first), then Cheongna Lake Park at dusk.
- Must-eat: oyster bossam at Mongno Jujeom in Seongnam-dong, or hand-made dumplings and pure-buckwheat noodles in Cheongna.
Is Seohae-gu the same as Seo-gu?
Yes for most of it — Seohae-gu is old Seo-gu minus the area north of the Ara Waterway. Incheon’s reorganization took effect on July 1, 2026, and the city went from two counties and eight districts to two counties and nine districts. Seo-gu’s renaming came through a separate law, passed by the National Assembly on May 7, 2026 and promulgated on June 2. The name was chosen in an August 2025 residents’ survey, in which Seohae-gu beat Cheongna-gu by 58.5% to 41.6%.
What went where on July 1, 2026
- Seohae-gu (서해구): old Seo-gu south of the Ara Waterway — Cheongna, Geomam-Gyeongseo, Yeonhui, Gajeong and Ruwon City, Seongnam, Gajwa, Sinhyeon-Wonchang and more.
- Geomdan-gu (검단구): old Seo-gu north of the waterway, seven neighbourhoods including Geomdan, Dangha, Majeon, Oryu-Wanggil and Ara-dong. Jeongseojin, at the canal mouth, is not: it stayed in Seohae-gu.
- Also renamed that day: old Jung-gu and Dong-gu became Jemulpo-gu and Yeongjong-gu, the airport island.
- Unchanged: street names and building numbers in road addresses. Only the district name changed. The Incheon Line 2 station by the district office is now Seohae-gu Office Station.
Kakao Map updated the district names on July 2, 2026, but many signs, bus maps and blog posts written before July still say Seo-gu (서구). If you search in Korean, try both names.
How do you get to Seohae-gu from Seoul?
By AREX, the airport railway, which crosses the district with two stations: Geomam and Cheongna International City. Incheon Line 2 runs north–south through the district from Geomam via the Asiad Stadium and Seohae-gu Office stations to Gajeong and Seongnam. Seoul Subway Line 7 ends at Seongnam Station.
🚇 Seoul to Seohae-gu by rail (AREX operator data; Incheon Facilities Corporation and NIBR access pages; Oct 2026)
| Route | Line | Approx. time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seoul Station → Cheongna International City | AREX all-stop | 39 min | 2,150 won by transit card; express trains do not stop |
| Hongik Univ. → Cheongna International City | AREX all-stop | 31 min | 2,050 won by transit card |
| Seoul Station → Geomam | AREX all-stop | 34 min | Change to Incheon Line 2; free NIBR shuttle from here |
| Gimpo Airport → Cheongna International City | AREX all-stop | 16 min | Easy link from Line 5, Line 9 and the Gimpo Goldline |
| Geomam → Asiad Stadium or Seohae-gu Office | Incheon Line 2 | 2–3 stops | The stadium is about a 20-minute walk from either station |
| Southwest Seoul → Seongnam | Seoul Line 7 via Bucheon | Long ride | Line 7’s western end; transfer to Incheon Line 2 |
Line 7 is due to continue to Cheongna, but the extension is not open. It was meant to open at the end of 2027, and Seoul Shinmun reported in June 2026 that the new mayor’s transition team expected a delay of three to four years. Use a T-money card on all of these; see our T-money guide.
On a layover? Cheongna International City is 20 minutes from Incheon Airport Terminal 1 on the AREX all-stop train (2,600 won by card, per the operator). It is a realistic outing on a long layover, but you are entering Korea, so check the K-ETA rules for your nationality and see our Incheon layover plans.
What is Seohae-gu known for?
Two very different halves: Cheongna, a planned new town on the coast, and the older industrial and residential streets around Gajeong, Seongnam and Gajwa. Cheongna is one of the three districts of the Incheon Free Economic Zone, along with Songdo and Yeongjong, and its parks, canal and new bridge are run by that authority and the city’s facilities corporation. Inland, 루원시티 Ruwon City is a redevelopment of the old Gajeong five-way junction near the Seoinchon interchange: designated in 2006, it only broke ground in December 2016, planned for about 9,600 households.
The northern edge of the district is the 경인아라뱃길 Gyeongin Ara Waterway, Korea’s first man-made canal, which runs 18 km from the Han River to the Yellow Sea and opened in 2012. At its western mouth, on the south bank, is the sunset spot Jeongseojin, the “true west” counterpart of Jeongdongjin on the east coast. It stayed in Seohae-gu, even though its legal address reads Oryu-dong, a Geomdan-gu neighbourhood. A cycle path follows the canal east toward the Han River.
Seohae-gu in seven dates
- 1988 — Seo-gu is created by splitting off from Buk-gu.
- 2012 — the Gyeongin Ara Waterway opens along the district's northern edge.
- 2014 — Incheon hosts the Asian Games; the main stadium stands in Yeonhui-dong.
- 2015 — Incheon Line 2 opens, linking Geomam, the stadium, Gajeong and Seongnam.
- Jan 5, 2026 — Cheongna Haneul Bridge opens to Yeongjong Island.
- May 7, 2026 — THE SKY184 observatory opens on the bridge tower.
- Jul 1, 2026 — Seo-gu south of the waterway becomes Seohae-gu.
What should you see in Seohae-gu?
Cheongna Haneul Bridge and THE SKY184 — Known as the Third Yeongjong Bridge before it opened on January 5, 2026, the 4.68 km cable-stayed bridge links Cheongna to Yeongjong Island and gives the airport a third road link. It has walking and cycling lanes alongside the six-lane road. The observatory on the main tower, THE SKY184, opened on May 7, 2026; Guinness lists it as the world’s highest observatory on a sea-crossing bridge. According to the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority’s announcement, reported by Herald Corporation, the sky observatory runs in hourly sessions of limited size, and the Edge Walk, a walk around the outside of the tower in a safety harness, takes about 90 minutes. Weekend slots sold out in the first weeks, Kyeonggi Ilbo reported, so book on the official website before you go. The sea observatory, waterfront space and traveller centre at the base are free. The ticket office is at Robotland-ro 127-85 in Cheongna; newsWA noted in September 2026 that public transport alone is awkward, so take a taxi from Cheongna International City Station.
Cheongna Lake Park and Canal Way — The Incheon Facilities Corporation lists the park at 690,573 m², a quarter of it lake, with a 4.3 km loop path through four zones, a rose garden, an outdoor stage and water-sports rentals. VisitKorea’s Hallyu listing notes that the park’s giant baduk board appears as “Semyeong City Baduk Park” in the Netflix drama The Glory. The music fountain, 120 m long with jets up to 75 m, runs from May to early October; the 2026 season ran May 1 to October 4, with lunchtime shows Tuesday to Sunday and an hour-long night show Friday to Sunday, the Kyunghyang Shinmun reported. Canal Way, the waterway park that continues from the lake, got new lighting and a water-play deck in summer 2026. Come at dusk for the lights on the water.
National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR) — The national body that collects and studies Korea’s native species runs a free museum in Gyeongseo-dong. Gallery 1 sorts specimens into seven kingdoms of life, from bacteria to mammals, with what the institute calls the country’s largest display of native animal specimens. There is also a Jeju 곶자왈 gotjawal forest room, a children’s gallery and an outdoor garden. Individuals walk in; groups of ten or more must book. The easiest access is the free shuttle from Geomam Station; from Cheongna International City, buses 2-1, 24-1, 43, 202 or 8801 run two stops, then it is about a 20-minute walk. Allow 90 minutes, more with children.
Incheon Asiad Main Stadium — Built for the 2014 Asian Games, the stadium in Yeonhui-dong seats 29,376 and is now rented out for events, with a 36-hole park-golf course on the grounds. The free Incheon Asiad Memorial Hall on the 4th floor tells the story of the Games and the 45 participating countries in six themed zones, with videos and hands-on sports zones; the Seohae-gu office featured it in October 2026 as an indoor outing for rainy days. Buses 17-1 and 70 stop at gate 4; Incheon Line 2’s Asiad Stadium and Seohae-gu Office stations are each about a 20-minute walk.
Gajeong and Seongnam old town — This is the Seo-gu that existed before Cheongna: low-rise streets, small factories and markets around the Gajeong Jungang Market and Seongnam stations on Incheon Line 2. There is no single sight here; come to eat (see below).

Where do locals eat in Seohae-gu?
The best eating is inland, in the old Seo-gu neighbourhoods, plus one Cheongna noodle shop. All of these had Naver reviews in September or October 2026; prices are quoted from those posts.
Mongno Jujeom (Seongnam-dong) — A bossam house that food site Siksin described in 2023 as serving the same three dishes for 40 years: bossam, gamjatang and pajeon. Nearly everyone orders the boiled pork, which comes with sweet napa leaves, salted shrimp and the reason for the queue, a spicy salad of fresh oysters, chives and radish. An October 2026 reviewer listed bossam at 22,000, 34,000 and 46,000 won for small, medium and large, with extra oyster salad at 10,000 won. It opens at 16:00, Monday to Saturday, closes on Sundays and limits tables to two hours. If nobody answers the phone, regulars say, it has sold out. On Naver it is listed as 목로주점.
Taeneung Sutbul Galbi (Seongnam-dong) — An old charcoal-grill house on Seongnam-ro that locals know for house-marinated pork galbi and a long run of side dishes, from soy-marinated crab to seasoned cockles and pancakes. A September 2026 review listed pork galbi at 17,000 won for 250 g and samgyeopsal at 17,000 won for 200 g, open daily 12:30–22:00. There is no car park.
Jeongseojin Jungang Market (Gajeong-dong) — Despite the name, this is not at Jeongseojin; it is Seohae-gu’s largest traditional market, right by exit 2 of Gajeong Jungang Market Station on Incheon Line 2. Go for jeon, rice cakes, snack stalls and noodle shops. The local favourite is Hongdugae Son-kalguksu, a registered good-price shop serving anchovy-broth knife-cut noodles with fresh geotjeori kimchi; October 2026 reviewers mention queues at lunch.
Gangseonsaeng’s Naengmyeon Makguksu (Cheongna) — The Cheongna pick. Every noodle dish uses 100% buckwheat noodles pressed to order, in clear beef-bone broth or with perilla oil, and the dumplings (steamed, kimchi or pan-fried) are made by hand. The shop won a silver prize at an Incheon city cooking contest. It appeared in episode 19 of the MBN/Channel S show Jeon Hyun-moo’s Plan 4 in late October 2026, so expect bigger crowds.
Bajirak Kalguksu (Geomam-dong) — The name just means “clam noodle soup”, and that is what this old Geomam shop does: clam knife-cut noodles, kaljebi (noodles and hand-torn dough together) and big dumplings. An October 2026 reviewer paid 8,000 won a bowl and warned of weekend and lunchtime waits. It pairs well with the NIBR shuttle from Geomam Station.

What does a one-day Seohae-gu route look like?
- Before you go: pick a Tuesday to Saturday, and book a THE SKY184 slot for mid-afternoon on the official website.
- 09:00 — Seoul Station. AREX all-stop to Geomam (34 minutes), then the free shuttle to the National Institute of Biological Resources, which opens at 09:30.
- Lunch — Geomam. Clam kalguksu at Bajirak Kalguksu; go before noon to beat the queue.
- Afternoon — the bridge. AREX one stop to Cheongna International City, taxi to THE SKY184 for your slot, then walk around the free sea observatory at the base.
- Dusk — Cheongna Lake Park and Canal Way. Walk part of the 4.3 km loop and the canal as the lights come on.
- Dinner — choose one. Buckwheat noodles and dumplings in Cheongna, then AREX back to Seoul (39 minutes); or bus or taxi inland to Seongnam-dong for oyster bossam at Mongno Jujeom.
Practical tip
- Watch the days: THE SKY184 and the NIBR close on Mondays; the Asiad Memorial Hall and Mongno Jujeom close on Sundays.
- Driving across the bridge: the toll is 2,000 won for a car. The free pass is only for vehicles registered to Incheon residents, so rental cars pay. Our guide to renting a car in Korea covers Hi-pass and tolls.
- Old names everywhere: bus stops, apps and blogs written before July 2026 say Seo-gu or Seo-gu Office. Seohae-gu Office Station on Incheon Line 2 is the same station.
- Seasons: the music fountain runs only from May to early October; in autumn and winter, come for clear-day bridge views and hot noodles.
