In Korea, baby’s first-birthday photos contain one strange scene. A hanbok-clad one-year-old sits in front of a spool of thread, a calligraphy brush, and a wad of cash, all laid in a row — while twenty adults hold their breath and watch.
That moment has a name: doljabi. And that single scene contains everything about how Korea treats the first birthday. In Korea, a first birthday is not the baby’s personal birthday — it is the public declaration that a family has made it through the danger.
The short answer
- Dol = first birthday. A rite of passage from an era of high infant mortality, celebrating
the baby survived a year
— and it has carried on to this day. - The guest list is very narrow. Where a wedding draws 300, a doljanchi draws 20 to 50. Being invited as a foreigner means you're considered quite close.
- ₩50,000 is the starting line if you attend. ₩100,000 if you're close. These days, cash has overtaken the dol ring thanks to gold prices.
- Doljabi is not serious fortune-telling. It's a group laugh-and-photograph event, so clap and cheer freely.
Why make such a big deal of a first birthday?
Because making it to one year old was never a given. From the Joseon dynasty into the early modern era, Korea’s infant mortality was extremely high, and getting a newborn through both the first winter and the first summer was a matter of odds. So Koreans marked two milestones — baegil at 100 days and dol at one full year — breathing relief twice over.
Baegil vs. dol — what's the difference?
Baegil is the 100th day after birth. Traditionally, families shared baekseolgi (white rice cake) and susu-pat-tteok (red bean rice cake) with neighbors to ward off bad luck. These days it's kept simple — photos at home or a studio and a family meal. Dol is the full year. That one is much bigger: guests are invited, and money is spent. If a foreigner is invited, it is almost always the dol.
Medicine improved and the original reason faded, but the form stayed — and something else filled the space: the parents’ social debut. If a wedding announces that two people have joined, the doljanchi has functioned as the announcement that we have become a family.
Doljabi — the object the baby grabs is the future
Laying out objects on the dolsang and watching which one the baby grabs first is the highlight of the doljanchi. The emcee explains the meaning of each object, and the moment the baby reaches out, the guests erupt.
this one will study well.
The traditional dol table carried thread, a book, a brush, money, rice, a bow, and a ruler. Now parents add objects symbolizing the careers they dream of. Some families set out only a judge’s gavel and a microphone; others curate the objects so that no matter what the baby grabs, the meaning is flattering.
waaah and clap. Take photos, react loudly — if anything, watching in silence is the awkward choice. These days some families even run a vote on which object will the baby pick?
Where and how do dol parties happen now?
The big buffet-hall doljanchi is disappearing fast. Up through the 2010s, the standard was to invite 100-plus guests to a dedicated dol buffet hall. Covid pushed everything smaller, and the shrinking birth rate finished the job — the whole trend has flipped.
🏠 Doljanchi types compared, 2026 — the further down, the more common today
| Type | Head count | Rough cost | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated dol buffet hall | 50–100 people | ₩3 million or more | Package with emcee, lighting, and video. Runs like a wedding hall |
| Hotel banquet room | 30–60 people | ₩4 million or more | Plated courses. Gangnam hotels run ₩100,000-plus per person |
| Korean or Chinese restaurant room | 15–30 people | ₩1–2 million | Just the two families. The dolsang is rented separately |
| Hanok cafe or small venue rental | 10–25 people | ₩1.5–2.7 million | Built around a dolsang package plus snap photography. The Instagram generation’s pick |
| Dol snap photography only | Family only | ₩500,000–1 million | No party — just studio photos. The fastest-growing option |
Real cases bear this out: one family rented a hanok cafe with a dolsang package for ₩1 million, spent ₩400,000 on the meal, ₩500,000 on hanbok, ₩550,000 on the snap shoot, ₩200,000 on hair and makeup, and ₩100,000 on return gifts — a total of ₩2.7 million. Another, with just ten family members, wrapped the whole thing up for about ₩1.2 million.
The real star of the doljanchi is the photos
These days the item parents spend the most on is not the food — it's the dol snap shoot. Popular photographers book up months in advance, and renting a dress for the mother alongside the baby's hanbok has become the new standard. The party shrinks while the shoot grows — that is the defining shift in 2020s dol culture.
Who gets invited — the exact opposite of a wedding
The doljanchi has the narrowest guest list of any Korean gyeongjosa. It is the mirror image of a wedding, which gets broadcast across the whole network.
👶 Doljanchi invitation customs — ○ usually invited / △ depends on the relationship / ✕ almost never invited
| Relationship | Invited? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grandparents and immediate family from both sides | ○ | In practice, the party often ends with just this group |
| Close relatives — uncles, aunts, cousins | ○ | Always included if the party has any scale |
| Very close friends | ○ | Three or four people, usually friends shared by the couple |
| Same-team coworkers | △ | These days, not inviting them is more common |
| College and high school classmates at large | ✕ | Unlike a wedding, they are not invited |
| Business contacts | ✕ | — |
The reason is clear: a doljanchi has a weak payback structure. Wedding gift money can one day be recovered at the other person’s wedding, but invite someone with no kids to your doljanchi and they’ll never get the chance to collect. As the birth rate collapsed, this asymmetry only grew, and a broad “dol parties feel burdensome” sentiment shrank the guest list itself.
How much to give, and what to bring
If you attend and eat, ₩50,000 is the comfortable floor. That reflects the per-person meal cost at a dol party, which runs ₩30,000–50,000.

The dol ring is disappearing
For a long time, the symbol of a dol gift in Korea was the dol ring — a gold ring. Gold was believed to ward off bad spirits, and on top of that it doubled as an asset stashed in the child’s name.
Then gold prices broke the custom. As of August 13, 2026, buying 1 don (3.75 g) of pure gold cost ₩879,000 at the Korea Gold Exchange standard. Add the craftsmanship fee and a one-don dol ring tops ₩900,000. Given that the price jumped from ₩822,000 on August 1 by more than ₩50,000 in a fortnight, there’s no sign of it cooling off.
The result shows up in the statistics. In a 2023 nationwide survey of adults, the most considered dol gift was ₩100,000 in cash (53.1%), while only 14.1% chose a one-don dol ring. Asked is a dol ring burdensome?, 88.6% said yes. These days gold shops sell dol rings by the half don, or even in 0.375 g pieces.
축 생일 (chuk saengil — birthday congratulations) or nothing at all, and sign your name — perfect. If you'd rather buy clothes, go one size up from the actual age. An outfit that fits at the first birthday won't fit in a month.
How the day itself unfolds
⏱️ A small doljanchi, step by step — about 1 to 1.5 hours total
| Order | What happens | What the guest does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrival, check-in, guest book | Hand over the envelope and sign your name. You can snap photos at the dolsang |
| 2 | Meal begins | Eat casually — no ceremony. If seats are assigned, follow the guidance |
| 3 | Baby’s entrance and a growth video | The lights dim and a photo slideshow plays |
| 4 | Doljabi | The highlight. React loudly and take photos |
| 5 | Cake cutting and parents’ remarks | Clap |
| 6 | Group photo and return gifts, then leave | Take one return gift on your way out |
The return gift is a doljanchi signature. On the way out, every guest gets a small present — rice cake, a towel, soap, a diffuser — often printed with the baby’s name and birth date. Don’t refuse it. Accepting it is part of the etiquette.
Dress code — there's really only one rule
- Avoid an all-black outfit. It's a happy occasion, so bright colors fit. Think of it as the counterpart to the wedding's
no white
rule. - No need for a suit. Neat casual is plenty.
- Skip strong perfume — there's a baby in the room.
- Only the family wears hanbok. A guest in hanbok would actually feel out of place.

Finally — the party fades, the ritual stays
Korea’s doljanchi is shrinking right now. Births are down, “this is a burden” sentiment has spread, and a 100-guest party has become tacky.
But one thing refuses to disappear: the doljabi. Whether there are ten guests or the family shoots alone in a studio, parents lay objects in front of the baby and watch what it picks up. A hundred years ago, adults set down a spool of thread and wished may you live long.
Today, a stethoscope and a microphone sit in its place.
If you’re invited to a doljanchi, don’t miss that moment. The format keeps changing, but those thirty seconds have looked the same for a hundred years.
