Filling up in Korea is quick and cheap by European standards, and more than half the stations are self-service. The screens are in Korean, though, and one feature surprises nearly every foreign driver: a ₩150,000 charge on your card when you only put in ₩60,000 worth.
This is Part 5 of our Korea driving series.
The short answer
- Gasoline is about ₩1,860 a litre nationally (Sep 2026), about ₩1,900 in Seoul.
- A full tank from near-empty: ₩87,000 (compact) to ₩137,000 (van). Budget up to ₩150,000 for big cars.
- 57% of stations are self-service: about ₩38 a litre cheaper nationally and ₩129 cheaper in Seoul (Sep 23, 2026).
- Choosing "full" pre-charges about ₩150,000, normally cancelled once the real amount is approved. Pick a fixed amount to avoid it.
- 휘발유 = gasoline (usually yellow), 경유 = diesel (usually green). Misfuelled? Don't start the engine.
How much does a full tank cost in Korea?
It depends on the car, and on how empty the tank is. Here’s the cost of filling each popular rental model from empty at September 2026 prices:
⛽ Full-tank cost by rental model (from empty, Sep 2026)
| Car | Tank | Nationwide | Seoul |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai Avante (compact) | 47 L | ~₩87,000 | ~₩90,000 |
| Hyundai Sonata / Kia K5 / Grandeur | 60 L | ~₩112,000 | ~₩114,000 |
| Kia Sorento, gasoline | 67 L | ~₩125,000 | ~₩128,000 |
| Kia Sorento, diesel | 71 L | ~₩131,000 | — |
| Kia Carnival | 72 L | ~₩134,000 | ~₩137,000 |
In practice you rarely fill from bone-dry, so a top-up from a quarter tank is about three-quarters of these numbers. A good rule: budget up to ₩150,000 for a full fill of a big car, and less for anything smaller.
Expressway stations (휴게소 주유소) are often slightly cheaper than city stations, and over the Chuseok holiday (Sep 24–27, 2026) 226 of them are knocking ₩100 off per litre.
Find the cheapest station
Kakao Navi, TMAP and Naver Map all show nearby stations with today's price per litre. Search 주유소 (gas station). Prices within a few kilometres can differ by ₩100 a litre or more, especially in Seoul.
How do you use a Korean self-service pump?
Look for the word 셀프 (self) on the station sign. The touch screen walks you through in this order:
- 1. Touch the anti-static pad (a round metal pad on the pump) to discharge static.
- 2. Choose the fuel: 휘발유 gasoline or 경유 diesel. Your rental car's fuel type is on the fuel cap and the contract.
- 3. Choose payment: card (신용카드).
- 4. Choose how much: a fixed amount in won (e.g. 50,000), litres, or 가득 (full).
- 5. Skip the loyalty card (보너스카드 / 포인트): tap "no" or "skip".
- 6. Insert your card, then lift the nozzle and fill.
- 7. Hang up the nozzle, take your card and the receipt (영수증).
Visa and Mastercard credit cards usually work at self-service pumps, but some foreign cards, especially debit cards, get rejected. If yours does, go inside and pay the attendant, or use a staffed station.
Why is there a ₩150,000 charge on my card?
When you press “full”, the pump can’t know how much you’ll pump, so it pre-charges the maximum, about ₩150,000. Normally that pre-charge is cancelled automatically once the real amount is approved. On your banking app you may briefly see both.
The problem comes if the second approval fails, for example because the pre-charge used up your card limit. Then the pre-charge stays as the payment, and getting the difference refunded can take 3–4 business days, according to Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service. How quickly a cancelled pre-charge disappears from a foreign card depends on your bank.
What do you say at a staffed station?
At a full-service station an attendant comes to your window. Two phrases cover it:
- 가득이요 (ga-deuk-i-yo) — “Fill it up, please.”
- 5만원이요 (o-man-won-i-yo) — “₩50,000 worth, please.”
Hand over your card. The attendant fills, brings back the card and receipt, and often a free bottle of water or a pack of tissues.
What if you put in the wrong fuel?
Nozzle colours help: gasoline is usually yellow, diesel usually green, premium gasoline red. But colours can vary by brand, so read the Korean label every time.
The common mistake is gasoline into a diesel car, because the thin gasoline nozzle fits a diesel filler neck. Korean rental SUVs and vans (Sorento, Carnival) are often diesel.
- Don't start the engine. If you haven't, draining the tank costs tens of thousands of won. If you have, repairs can run ₩3–5 million.
- Tell the station staff and keep the receipt.
- Call the rental company's emergency line. Car insurance generally doesn't cover misfuelling.
What about LPG and electric rental cars?
- LPG cars (models marked “LPi”, common among budget and van rentals) need an LPG station (LPG 충전소). Self-service LPG has been legal only since November 2025 and most LPG stations are still staffed.
- Electric cars use public chargers. Fast charging costs about ₩325–393 per kWh depending on charger speed (from August 2026). Ask the rental company whether a charging card is included and what battery level you need to return it at.
What fuel level should you return the car with?
Korean rental companies usually hand the car over full and expect it back full. If it’s short, they charge an estimated refuelling cost, which is higher than filling it yourself. Fill up at a station near the return office and keep the receipt as proof.
