The short answer
- One rule made the cut: a stay is here only if it is the destination itself, not the backdrop to a trip. Proximity to attractions doesn't count toward the score
- Rates run from USD 81.09 (the Seoul hanok) to USD 518.95 (Kosmos Ulleungdo) — a 6.4x spread
- Four of the 8 sit on islands (Ulleungdo, Jeju) — the architects chose striking terrain over pricey city plots, so travel time is part of the trip
If you pick hotels by location, price, and breakfast, skip this one. The 8 places here are the opposite — the act of sleeping in the building itself fills a slot in your itinerary. Where the architect could be confirmed, I name them; every rate below is from the Klook affiliate feed, August 2026.
Where to start — the four standouts
Background: Itami Jun and Jeju
Itami Jun (Yoo Dong-ryong, 1937–2011), who designed Podo Hotel, left several works across southwestern Jeju, including the Supungseok Museum and Bangju Church. On a night at Podo Hotel, looping the nearby Itami Jun buildings is a natural route. Check each venue's 2026 visiting rules before you go.

Getting there is part of the trip — the Ulleungdo factor
The priciest stay on this list, Kosmos, comes with one condition you should know before booking. Ulleungdo is ferry-only. Passenger ships depart from Pohang, Gangneung, Mukho, and elsewhere, and cancellations for weather are common, so padding your schedule with a day on either side is the safe move. Since each route’s operator and timetable changes by season in 2026, book your ferry tickets first and the room second.

Podo Hotel — Itami Jun's Jeju, a master's building within a day's reach
No ferry needed — a Jeju flight gets you there. Feed reference rate: USD 411.45 a night. Pair it with nearby Itami Jun buildings (like Bangju Church) for a half-day architecture route.
Prices and availability as of August 2026; vary by date and option. A small property, so peak season and weekends sell out early.
One last thing. Places like these can feel as if you’ve already seen everything in photos — but the curve of Podo Hotel’s roof or the concrete shell of Kosmos only reveal themselves when you walk through them. Set aside a full day for the stay itself and fold the sightseeing list away. That is the right way to spend this money.
