Where are you most likely to see a snowscape?
Gangwon’s mountains beat the capital region, reliably. Seoul’s first snow usually falls in late November to early December, but it tends to melt before it settles — the real snow-covered scenery only comes together when a cold snap holds from late December to early February. Head toward Seoraksan or the inland Hongcheon hills instead, and you get both more snow days and deeper accumulation. If snow itself is the whole point, aim for Gangwon.

On the day snow actually falls, roads are at their worst and both tours and buses run late. The smarter bet is the first clear day right after the capital region gets a good blanket of snow. As long as temperatures hold below freezing, the snowscapes around Gapyeong and Hongcheon linger for days.

This is the default winter day trip. Walk Nami Island’s snowy paths in daylight, then move to the Garden of Morning Calm as the sun drops to catch the Five-Color Starlight Garden Festival lights before heading back. The lights come on at 17:00, so flip that order and your whole route tangles.
The DIY snag is Gapyeong’s local bus. The one linking Nami Island’s ferry dock and the Garden of Morning Calm runs infrequently, so squeezing both into a single day easily eats an hour or more of waiting. That’s exactly why one-day tours that connect the two by vehicle are so useful in winter.

Is a Seoraksan day trip actually realistic?
With a tour, yes. On public transport, barely. Seoul to Sokcho takes 2 hours 30 minutes or more each way, so going solo means an express-bus round trip that swallows half your day. That’s why the pre-dawn combo tour — Seoraksan plus Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm in a single day — has become the standard winter route.
In winter, day-trippers realistically stick to the Sogongwon area and the Gwongeumseong cable car, the stretch where you can take in snow-covered granite peaks with no hiking gear. The cable car suspends service often in high winds or heavy snow, so check whether it is running that day before you commit.
