Back in 2016, if you had asked “What makeup do Korean women actually use?” the answer was easy. Sulwhasoo, innisfree, Etude House — maybe a road-shop haul from the main drag in Myeongdong. Fast-forward to 2026 and the answer is unrecognizable. The vanities of Korean women in their 20s and 30s are barely stocked with conglomerate brands anymore. Instead, indie brands that didn’t even exist five years ago now own the shelf — one category at a time.

This is not guesswork dressed up as trend reporting. What follows is triangulated from three hard data sources: online mention volume across news, blogs, and communities; the Olive Young Awards, which are built on 180 million real purchases; and publicly disclosed brand revenue filings.

The short answer

  • Indie brands run the show — rom&nd, AMUSE, and fwee for color; TORRIDEN, ANUA, Round Lab, and numbuzin for skincare.
  • The brands people know (innisfree, Sulwhasoo) and the brands people buy (TORRIDEN, ANUA) have fully split.
  • The 2026 keyword is skincare-infused makeup — actives in your tint, pigment in your moisturizer.
  • You really only need one store: Olive Young. Toss in a Daiso run for disposables and you are shopping like a local.

Which brands are Korean women in their 20s–30s actually talking about right now?

rom&nd. Data & Research crunched the Q1 2026 numbers across news outlets, online communities, and blogs and found rom&nd sitting at 13,553 mentions — comfortably ahead of everyone else. AMUSE landed at 12,168, with fwee rounding out the top three at 9,410.

What jumps out: the top three are all color cosmetics brands. Skincare chugs along on quiet, steady repurchases. Color feeds on novelty — every new seasonal tint drop becomes a conversation. rom&nd’s Juicy Flash Lip Oil, AMUSE’s Bebe Tint: these are the units of chat in group chats and on TikTok.

So what is actually selling the most?

Mentions are not sales. The Olive Young Awards pull from roughly 180 million real purchase records to name 166 products across 40 categories — and in 2025, once you strip out the conglomerate brands and Olive Young’s own private label, 75% of the #1 spots went to indie companies.

TORRIDEN in particular swept three categories at once: Essence & Serum, Mask Pack, and Lip Care.

What is different about 20-somethings versus 30-somethings?

Everyone lumps them together as “2030,” but their vanities tell different stories. Women in their early 20s chase brands. Women in their 30s chase ingredients.

University Tomorrow 20s Research Institute, 2026 Beauty Survey: When asked to name a skincare brand off the top of their head, respondents answered innisfree (10.7%) > Sulwhasoo (8.5%) > Dr.G (5.7%). But here is the twist: among teenagers (15–18) and early-20s respondents (19–24), TORRIDEN surfaced at a rate noticeably higher than in older cohorts. The awareness baton is being passed — it is just happening from the youngest cohort upward.

Some context

In Korea, brand loyalty is low but product loyalty is fierce. Nobody says "I use ANUA." They say "I use the heartleaf toner." Ingredients and reviews come before the brand name, which is precisely how a single great product can slingshot an indie brand to hundreds of billions of won in revenue almost overnight.

Why indie brands over the conglomerates?

The numbers spell it out. As of 2024, 25 indie K-beauty brands had crossed the ₩100 billion revenue mark. The Founders, the company behind ANUA, posted ₩427.8 billion (up 198.6% year-over-year). Goodai Global, which owns Beauty of Joseon, hit ₩330.9 billion (up 137.1%). TIRTIR pulled in ₩273.6 billion (up 63.4%). TORRIDEN reached ₩186 billion (up 176.3%) — and over ₩100 billion of that came through Olive Young alone.

Within Olive Young itself, three brands broke ₩100 billion in annual sales on the platform: Mediheal, Round Lab, and TORRIDEN. Rounding out the top ten: Goodal, numbuzin, Dr.G, rom&nd, BANILA CO, UNOVE, and CLIO. That list, more or less, is the Korean 20–30-something vanity.

Structurally, three things collided to make this possible. First, manufacturers like Cosmax and Kolmar Korea are willing to do small-batch production, so brands can launch without owning a factory. Second, Olive Young provides the shelf space and the purchase-data feedback loop. Third, YouTube and Instagram offer distribution without an ad budget. The net effect: brand lifecycles got shorter, rotation got faster, and the barrier to entry collapsed.

What this means for travelers

You do not need to hunt down standalone brand stores to buy what is popular in Korea right now. Most of these brands have few or no flagship locations — their real home is the Olive Young shelf. One Olive Young run covers almost everything, and you will save both time and money versus store-hopping.

What is trending right now, in 2026?

Olive Young’s 2026 trend report is built around a keyword they are calling FULLMOON. Two of the movements inside it are things you will actually feel when you walk the aisles.

1) Skincare-infused makeup — actives in your color, pigment in your base. A growing number of shoppers treat makeup time as “skin-recovery time,” which means they now read ingredient lists on color products the way they would a serum. In 2025, searches for skincare keywords like calming, barrier, and hydration inside Olive Young’s makeup category jumped 150% year-over-year. Color lip serum sales shot up 727%. That is why so many lip products on the shelf have “serum,” “balm,” or “oil” in the name now. It is not marketing fluff — the sales data backs it.

2) Routine-level consumption. Global shoppers are no longer buying individual products. They are buying the “K-skincare routine” as a unit. The old three-step cleanse-tone-moisturize framework has expanded to include pads, ampoules, and spot patches. Same logic: 7 out of 10 shoppers who bought a skincare device also bought an essence in the same transaction.

Where to actually shop in Seoul

One large Olive Young + one Daiso. That is the combo. Seriously.

Olive Young’s flagship “Town” stores carry the widest inventory, have foreign-language staff, and run instant tax-refund counters. Daiso handles the ₩3,000–5,000 disposables — mask packs, hair packs, cotton pads, puffs. You will often find mini versions of the same brands at Daiso for a fraction of the price.

4 shopping tips

  • Sale cycles: Olive Young runs big seasonal sales in March, June, September, and December. Even outside those windows, 1+1 and 2+1 deals are constant. Trust me on this one — never pay full price.
  • Tax refund: Bring your passport and you can get an instant refund at the larger Town stores. There is a minimum spend per receipt, so consolidate your haul into one transaction if you can.
  • Sunscreen is the highest-satisfaction-per-cubic-centimeter item you will buy. Korean sunscreens tend toward lightweight, non-greasy finishes, which makes them a low-risk gift that people actually use.
  • When picking a tint, just jot down the shade code (e.g., rom&nd 09) before you go. It will save you from staring blankly at a wall of 40 identical-looking tubes.
