In Korea, a university name is a number. The moment someone hears it, their brain locates it on an internal leaderboard. But that leaderboard has an old defect: there’s no slot for women’s universities.
SKY Sogang-Sungkyunkwan-Hanyang Chung-Ang·Kyung Hee·Hankuk Univ. of Foreign Studies·Univ. of Seoul Konkuk-Dongguk-Hongik — this mnemonic chain solidified in the 1990s and has barely budged since. Meanwhile, Ewha has overtaken Sogang in world rankings, and the admissions cutoffs at Sookmyung and Sungshin have climbed for three straight years. The line alone stays frozen in place.
This article doesn’t just reproduce that line. Instead, it rebuilds the ranking from scratch using real data across five axes: 2026 regular admissions cutoffs, QS, THE, the JoongAng Ilbo university evaluation, employment rates, and accumulated funds.
Why Did the Old Line Leave Women's Universities Out?
Short answer: inertia from the era when the line was created. Terms like SKY and Sogang-Sungkyunkwan-Hanyang were forged in male-dominated admissions forums and cram-school placement charts, and women’s universities were treated as a separate category you looked up elsewhere. The problem is that the resulting classification doesn’t match the actual score distribution.
Lately, the line itself has been shifting in small ways. You’ll see Sogang-Sungkyunkwan-Hanyang-Chung-Ang (bumping Chung-Ang up) and Konkuk-Dongguk-Hongik-Sookmyung (adding Sookmyung) in real use. But Ewha still has no seat in any line.
How This Ranking Was Built
Methodology — Admissions Cutoffs as the Backbone, Four Other Axes for Cross-Verification
- Primary axis: 2026 regular admissions percentile bands. The felt hierarchy in Korea is essentially determined by admissions scores alone, so I used that as the skeleton — specifically, a dataset that places women's universities and coed universities on the same table.
- Cross-check 1: 2025 actual admissions cutoffs (70th-percentile). Verified the placement-table estimates against confirmed figures released by each university.
- Cross-checks 2–4: QS 2027 · THE 2026 · JoongAng Ilbo University Evaluation 2025. Research and reputation axes.
- Cross-check 5: Employment rates (2024 disclosure) · accumulated funds. Outcomes and finances.
- Excluded: Medical school, dental school, veterinary school, pharmacy school, teachers' colleges, military academies, and corporate contract programs. These operate on a major-based hierarchy, not a university one — covered in a separate section below.
A Note on Reading the Numbers
Every university uses a different number of subjects and a different conversion formula, so you cannot compare raw converted scores across universities. Seoul National's 421, Yonsei's 721, and Hanyang's 993 all come from completely different scoring systems. Even percentiles can look inflated when a university counts only the top 3 out of 4 subjects instead of all 4. The tiers below should be read as bands only. A one-tier difference can easily flip depending on the dataset.

4 Things That Change When You Add Women's Universities
- Ewha lands in T1 — same tier as Sogang and Hanyang. A separate admissions-cutoff compilation even has Ewha at 91.83, ahead of Hanyang (91.46), Chung-Ang (91.48), and Sogang (90.96).
- Sookmyung lands in T4 — below Konkuk-Dongguk-Hongik (T3), alongside Kookmin-Soongsil-Sejong-Dankook. The phrase "Konkuk-Dongguk-Hongik-Sookmyung" overstates it by about half a tier.
- Hongik sits at T3 — but peel off the art school and it's T0-level. The perfect example of why a university-wide tier can be meaningless.
- Ajou, Inha, Gachon, and Incheon National are outside Seoul, but their score bands overlap with mid-tier Seoul schools, so I included them.

Why Are They Rising?
No definitive analysis exists yet, but two factors keep getting flagged. One: the pool of applicants to women's universities isn't shrinking even as the overall college-age population declines, so relative competitiveness holds. Two: women's universities have been expanding their STEM, nursing, and pharmacy programs. At Ewha, for instance, brain and cognitive sciences, pharmacy, and engineering now draw higher score bands than the humanities.
How Does the Order Change When You Look at World Rankings?
The admissions-tier order and the world-ranking order are strikingly different. Lay QS 2027 (released June 2026) and THE 2026 side by side, and the mismatches pile up.

Why Do These Rankings Differ?
World rankings measure citation impact, internationalization, faculty-to-student ratio, and employer reputation. Korea's felt hierarchy measures exactly one thing: entrance exam scores. The former captures what a university produces; the latter captures who gets in. There's a long-standing critique that Korean society has trusted the latter more because universities here have functioned less as educational institutions and more as sorting mechanisms.
The Year KAIST Disappeared from the Rankings
KAIST was wiped from the QS 2026 edition entirely. One of its departments had encouraged overseas researchers to participate in the reputation survey and mentioned gift certificates — a QS rule violation. KAIST returned at world #65 in the 2027 edition. A university's actual capabilities don't vanish and reappear in twelve months. What this episode really shows is how heavily world rankings lean on reputation surveys.
The JoongAng Ilbo Evaluation Puts Out Yet Another Order

Ewha’s exact rank depends on the source. The university’s own announcement claims 6th overall; community-compiled tables show 7th (with Kyung Hee at 6th). Either way, Ewha sits above Sogang and Chung-Ang — that much is consistent.

Why Seoul National Ranks 10th — The Numbers Trap
The employment rate is calculated after removing graduate-school-bound students from the denominator. At SNU, 31.2% of graduates continue to graduate school, followed by Yonsei at 22.1%, Korea at 22%, and Ewha at 19%. The higher a university sits in the prestige hierarchy, the more of its graduates pursue advanced degrees — which drives the employment-rate number down. This is why you can't read the employment-rate ranking as a university ranking.
Break it down by discipline and the picture changes again. In engineering employment, Korea University (77.7%) leads, followed by Sungkyunkwan, Hanyang, and Sogang — and then Ewha at 5th. In business and economics, Sogang (77.6%) takes the top spot.
What If You Rank by Money? — Accumulated Funds
Which Universities Outside Seoul Compete with the Capital's Top Tier?
Being outside Seoul doesn’t always mean a step down. There are exceptions — the five science and technology institutes. These are national research universities established by special legislation. They don’t select solely by the college entrance exam, and crucially, tuition is effectively free.

By QS, KAIST (65th) and POSTECH (106th) both outrank Sungkyunkwan (108th) and Hanyang (155th). All five offer full or near-full tuition waivers to every admitted student, so a significant number of applicants weigh a top-tier Seoul school against a tuition-free institute every year — and many choose the latter.
There are also nine flagship national universities in the provinces: Pusan National, Kyungpook National, Chonnam National, Chungnam National, Chonbuk National, Kangwon National, Chungbuk National, Gyeongsang National, and Jeju National. In QS 2027, Pusan National (449th, #14 nationally) and Kyungpook National (481st, #15) sit right in front of Ewha and Sogang. Their admissions cutoffs, however, have slid into the lower-mid Seoul band, and the 2026 cycle saw so few waitlist admits that observers called it “practically zero.”
What Falls Outside This Ranking Entirely
Fields Where Major Matters More Than School
- Medicine · Dentistry · Korean Medicine · Pharmacy · Veterinary Medicine — These sit on a separate plane above the entire university hierarchy. By cumulative percentile: SNU medicine within the top 0.1%, the floor for provincial medical schools around 1.6–1.7%. A provincial med school outranks SNU's top engineering program (Electrical and Information Engineering at 2.2%).
- Semiconductor contract programs — Sogang Semiconductor 2.3%, Sungkyunkwan Semiconductor 3.4%, Hanyang Semiconductor 3.9%. Sogang's contract program rivals mid-tier SNU engineering. The reason: guaranteed hiring pipelines at major corporations.
- Teachers' colleges — On the decline. Seoul National University of Education's competition ratio dropped from 3.23:1 to 2.3:1, and average converted scores have fallen sharply. The data varies enough across sources that the 2026 placement table still puts it in the 92nd-percentile band.
- Military academies — The steepest drop of all. First-round exam cutoffs fell from the 230–240 range in 2018 to the 160s in the 2026 cycle. The Naval Academy's STEM track shed 66 points in eight years. Meanwhile, the average competition ratio rose to 33.1:1 — meaning empty applications (candidates with no real intent to attend) have surged.
- Art schools · Music schools — Fields like Hongik's College of Fine Arts, where portfolios and auditions decide everything, operate independently of university-tier logic.

Campus Visit Checklist
- Outdoors are open; indoors, be mindful. Campus paths and plazas are open to anyone, but lecture halls and libraries often require a student ID tap.
- Avoid exam periods. Late April, mid-June, late October, and mid-December are midterm and finals weeks.
- Student cafeterias generally welcome outsiders. A meal runs about ₩5,000 — some of the cheapest food in Seoul.
- Don't photograph students as subjects. Buildings and scenery are fine, but photos where a person's face fills the frame are a sensitive matter.
- The academic year runs March–June and September–December. If you're here for photos, aim for breaks and weekends. If you want the campus atmosphere, go on a weekday during the semester.
Can You Trust This Ranking?
No. The tier table in this article is also just the result of emphasizing one axis over others. As we’ve seen, change the axis and the order keeps flipping.
- By world rankings, Sejong outranks Chung-Ang and Sogang.
- By employment rate, Sogang is #1 and SNU is #10.
- By money, Ewha and Hongik compete with SKY.
- By major, a provincial med school sits above SNU engineering, and Hongik’s art school transcends tiers entirely.
And the whole map is shifting beneath our feet. The college-age population is shrinking. Universities are already failing to fill their quotas. Military academy cutoffs have dropped 60-plus points in eight years. Teachers’ college competition ratios have halved. Meanwhile, four women’s universities are rising in lockstep. Ten years from now, this table will look considerably different.
For a traveler, this hierarchy isn’t a scoreboard. It’s a grammar for reading Korean society. Why does a character’s expression change in a drama when someone mentions where they went to school?
