Suncheon has built its tourism around nature, and it has the credentials. The bay south of the city holds one of the country’s best-known wetlands: in 2006 it became the first coastal wetland in Korea registered under the Ramsar Convention, and in 2021 its tidal flats were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of “Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats.” Next to it, the city turned the site of the 2013 Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo into Korea’s first national garden.

For a train traveller, the good news is that one city bus ties the day together. Bus 66 runs from Suncheon Station to the National Garden and on to the wetland, so you can do both without a taxi. A third sight, the walled village of Naganeupseong, is further out and deserves its own half-day; the city’s best-known lunch is gukbap in the old market.

The short answer

  • Trains: KTX on the Jeolla Line from Yongsan, Seoul Station or Suseo. Check the journey time and the last train back in KORAIL+.
  • Station to sights: city bus 66 from the stop across from the station goes to the National Garden (East Gate) and the Suncheon Bay Wetland.
  • Must-see: the reed fields of Suncheon Bay Wetland, Suncheon Bay National Garden and Naganeupseong Folk Village.
  • Must-eat: gukbap in the Wutjang market alley and a 꼬막정식 kkomak jeongsik, a set meal built around cockles from the bay.

How long is the KTX from Seoul to Suncheon?

Suncheon City’s tourism guide puts the KTX at about two and a half hours from Seoul, but take the exact time for your train from KORAIL+. Suncheon sits on the Jeolla Line after Iksan and Jeonju, two stops before the terminus at Yeosu EXPO (via Yeocheon), and the number of stops differs from train to train.

KTX, SRT and the 2026 merger

Since 1 September 2026, the high-speed trains that ran as SRT from Suseo Station have been folded into KTX: Korail took over SR's high-speed rail business, and every high-speed train is now sold as a KTX. Book on Korail's website or in the KORAIL+ app (the old Korail Talk app, updated), which searches Seoul, Yongsan and Suseo departures together. When the merger was announced in August 2026, Korail said the old SRT app would keep selling tickets for a while, but only to non-members. Since 1 October 2026, tickets go on sale at 07:00 two months before departure. Suseo is still a separate station in Gangnam, so check which station is printed on your ticket.

Suncheon also pairs well with Yeosu. The KTX continues via Yeocheon to Yeosu EXPO, and since 1 September 2026 a new express bus, ALL-TA 3002, links the two cities in about 70 minutes with 18 stops, according to Suncheon City. A two-day trip that arrives in one city and leaves from the other works well.

How do you get from Suncheon Station to Suncheon Bay?

City bus 66, from the stop across the road from the station. Suncheon City’s Suncheon Bay site gives about 21 minutes to the National Garden’s East Gate and about 35 minutes to the Suncheon Bay Wetland, at the standard city-bus fare. By road the wetland is 8.6 km from the station.

Doing the garden first works well, because the wetland is at its best late in the day, when the light is low over the reeds. Bus 66 serves both stops, so you can ride it again between them; the Skycube is the scenic alternative, with its own fare.

Bus tips

Pay with a T-money or other Korean transit card, or carry some cash. In Naver Map, search for the stop name 국가정원(동문) or 순천만습지 to see the next bus 66 and follow your ride.

Suncheon Bay Wetland — A wide estuary with reed beds, mud flats and boardwalks that run out through the reeds. In 2006 it became Korea’s first coastal wetland registered under the Ramsar Convention, and in 2021 the Boseong–Suncheon tidal flats were inscribed by UNESCO with three other Korean tidal flats. It is also a world-class wintering ground for the hooded crane, the city’s official bird, and local farmers grow crops around the bay with the cranes in mind. The reeds turn gold in autumn; in winter, bring binoculars.

Suncheon Bay National Garden — Built for the Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo, held from 20 April to 20 October 2013, and reopened as a permanent garden in April 2014. VisitKorea lists its area as 926,992 m². It mixes themed gardens, lakes and long paths, and it is busy: Newsis reported that it passed one million visitors on 20 April 2026, four days earlier than the year before, with foreign visitors up by about half.

Naganeupseong Folk Village — A complete walled town out in Nagan-myeon, away from the city centre. The first earthen walls went up in 1397 against Japanese raiders; in 1626 the magistrate Im Gyeong-eop rebuilt them in stone. The wall is about 1,410 m long and still encloses three villages of thatched houses, many of them lived in. You can walk the top of the wall for the view over the roofs. It was the first place in Korea where a fortress and its village were designated together as a historic site, and it appears in many historical dramas.

Where do locals eat in Suncheon?

Gukbap in the old market, cockles from the bay. The tidal flats of this coast supply 꼬막 kkomak, small blood cockles that the region serves boiled, seasoned, in bibimbap and in pancakes, usually all at once in a set meal.

Wutjang Gukbap Alley (Bukmun-gil 40) — Wutjang is the “upper market” in the old town, a permanent market that fills with street stalls on the five-day market dates ending in 5 and 0. Its gukbap alley, around 20 shops under orange awnings according to Metro Seoul, is designated by both the province and the city as a local food street. The house tradition: order gukbap for two or more and a plate of boiled pork head and sundae comes with it. VisitKorea gives hours of 08:00–20:00, varying by shop, and lists the market as closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays except on market days.

Park Guyun Hoegwan (Palma 2-gil 90) — A cockle and crab restaurant that holds the SME ministry’s Baeknyeon Gage (century store) label. A February 2026 guide to Jeolla’s century stores lists the cockle set at ₩22,000 and a blue crab gejang set at ₩37,000. It is near Suncheon Bay National Garden and open daily 11:00–21:00 (Siksin, Feb 2026).

Suncheonman Jeolla-do Bapsang (Suncheonman-gil 496-1) — The practical choice at the wetland entrance, so you can eat without going back into town. The cockle set is the order; the menu also has 짱뚱어탕 jjangttungeo-tang, a stew of mudskipper, a fish that lives on the bay’s mud flats. VisitKorea lists 08:00–20:00 with last orders at 19:00, open every day.

Last train and luggage

Book the return train first, then plan backwards: the wetland is about 35 minutes from the station by bus, and evening buses can be slower at weekends. If you want Naganeupseong too, give it a separate morning or stay the night. Riding without a valid ticket carries a surcharge — see our guide to KTX fare rules. For luggage, ask at the station's information desk on the day; we could not confirm storage details from an official source.
