The short answer

Not all day trips from Seoul are priced the same — or even accessible the same way. Some destinations are physically impossible to reach without a tour, while others are one subway ride away and much cheaper on your own. This post sorts four of them — the DMZ, Nami Island, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, and fall-foliage spots — by the only numbers that matter: whether you can go DIY, what it costs, and what the booking rules are.

Why Can You Only Visit the DMZ on a Tour?
The southern DMZ area — the Third Tunnel and Dora Observatory route — is a restricted military zone, so individual entry is outright banned. You can’t reach it by rental car or public transport; the only way in is an escorted tour with an approved operator. A standard tour (Third Tunnel + Dora Observatory) runs roughly ₩55,000–95,000, while higher-tier packages that include Panmunjom (JSA) climb to ₩80,000–130,000.
The JSA (Panmunjom) route is currently suspended
Following the July 2023 border-crossing incident at the Joint Security Area, the JSA visit program has been suspended indefinitely under United Nations Command (UNC) policy. Most bookable products today center on the Third Tunnel and Dora Observatory; if a product includes the JSA, verify whether it's actually running before you book.
The booking rules are strict, too. Bring your physical passport — the original (no copies or phone photos) — on the day, and note that nationals of Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Pakistan, Sudan, and Syria, as well as South Korean passport holders, can’t participate. Young children are also restricted. Tours can be canceled same-day depending on the military situation, so book at least 72 hours ahead and leave slack in your schedule.

Why Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Doesn't Need a Tour
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is the polar opposite of the DMZ. The fortress wall itself is open free of charge year-round. The only paid sites are Hwaseong Haenggung (adults ₩2,000, teens ₩1,500, children ₩1,000) and the combined ticket for Hwaseong Haenggung, the Suwon Hwaseong Museum, and the Suwon Museum (adults ₩4,000). Wear a hanbok and Hwaseong Haenggung admission is even waived.
Getting there is easy: about 51 minutes on subway Line 1 from Seoul Station, or as little as 32 minutes on KTX or ITX, with fares from the ₩7,000 range. Hwaseong Haenggung also opens at night from May 1 to November 1, 2026, Fridays through Sundays, 18:00–21:30.

When a Tour Is Still the Better Call
If it's just the fortress, DIY is overwhelmingly cheaper. But if you want to bundle in the Korean Folk Village or Starfield Suwon, need English commentary, or just want to skip the round-trip transit time, a tour is the more comfortable option.

Nami Island, Petite France, and the Garden of Morning Calm sit somewhere between the DMZ and Suwon. You can reach them on your own via the ITX-Cheongchun train and Gapyeong-area buses, but squeezing all three into one day is tight on transit time. Looking only at confirmed admission: Nami Island costs ₩19,000 for adults (round-trip ferry included), and the Garden of Morning Calm ₩11,000 (₩2,000 off when booked online).

Fall-Foliage Spots: When and How to Go
In 2026, Naejangsan’s foliage is expected to start turning in mid-October and peak in late October to early November, while Seoraksan peaks earlier, in mid-October. From Seoul Station, KTX reaches the Naejangsan area in about 1 hour 40 minutes, so a day trip is theoretically possible — but reaching the trailhead by public transport adds transfers and waiting, making a single day genuinely tight.
