The short answer

  • "Sleeping in a hanok" and "a room that sees the palace" are different products — a hanok sits low and the palace is beyond the wall, so a hanok stay won't give you the palace view
  • Seven palace-area stays bookable on international platforms run USD 81.09–1,008.15 — a 12x spread
  • For the hanok branch, the benchmark is Hanok Hotel DAAM (USD 81.09) near Changdeokgung; for the palace view, UH Suite (USD 291.89) beside Deoksugung

There’s a separate post comparing Jongno-area stays by walking time to the palaces and access to Dongdaemun shopping. This one is for travelers buying “tradition” within that zone. The choice has two branches: sleeping inside a hanok building, or looking down at a palace from a modern one. The two experiences don’t overlap, so pick a branch first.

Hanok stays — the ones actually bookable on platforms

Bukchon and Seochon are full of small guest hanoks, but many only take reservations through their own channels or domestic platforms, which is a barrier for travelers who need a foreign card and an English booking screen. On the international-platform feed, the benchmark hanok stay is DAAM.

🏯
Hanok Hotel DAAM
On Yulgok-ro in Jongno, walking distance from Changdeokgung. A small hanok hotel 5 minutes from Ikseon-dong and 10 from Insa-dong. The cheapest on this list (USD 81.09).
🏰
UH Suite Seoul Deoksugung
A suite stay beside Deoksugung. The palace is in the name, and that adjacency is the product (USD 291.89).
🏢
Somerset Palace Seoul
A residence between Gyeongbokgung and Insa-dong. Kitchen-equipped units, so it's the "live here for a few days" option near the palaces (USD 145.95).
🌳
NINE TREE Insadong
A chain hotel in the middle of Insa-dong. Not a hanok, but the dead center of the palace–Insa-dong–Ikseon-dong walking loop (USD 190.95).

What to expect from a hanok stay — and what to give up

A hanok's selling point is the light through the courtyard, eaves, and changhoji paper. What you give up is soundproofing and a spacious bathroom. Timber buildings let the next room's noise through, and bathrooms are often narrow add-ons built later. If your goal is a quiet night's sleep rather than a traditional experience, a regular hotel beats a hanok.

Palace-view rooms — looking over the wall

A room with a palace view needs height, so it is inevitably a modern building. On the Deoksugung side, UH Suite sits right next to the palace; on the Gyeongbokgung side, Four Seasons Hotel Seoul in Gwanghwamun is known for Gyeongbokgung-facing views from its upper rooms. Whether a “palace view” grade is sold year-round changes by season, so check the booking screen.

Hanok Hotel DAAM — near Changdeokgung, the list's cheapest hanok entry

On Yulgok-ro in Jongno, with Changdeokgung, Ikseon-dong, and Insa-dong all on foot. Feed reference rate: USD 81.09 a night — lower than many ordinary hotels in this area.

Prices and availability as of August 2026; vary by date and option. A small property with few rooms, so weekends sell out early.

The one-line rule: a hanok (DAAM) for a one-night experience, a residence (Somerset Palace) for a 2+ night stay that goes in and out of the palaces daily, and a Deoksugung-side suite or a Four Seasons upper room for a special-occasion view — with a 12x budget gap between the ends, set your purpose before your price.
