Yeouido, Mapo, Gongdeok & Sinchon Hotels Compared: Zero-Transfer AREX vs. Hangang Park Walk Times

Plenty of guides lump Yeouido and Mapo into one west-Seoul bucket, but the two actually ride different lines. Mapo and Gongdeok are a transfer hub where AREX, Lines 5 and 6 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line all meet; Yeouido is served by Lines 5 and 9. Which side wins depends on which airport you fly through and whether you plan to stroll along Hangang Park.

For each hotel below, I confirmed the nearest station and walking time, then split out the AREX express vs all-stop and Line 9 express vs local differences into their own tables. I also added the number that trips people up most when choosing a Yeouido hotel — the real walking time to Hangang Park. Anything I could not verify is marked as such in the tables.

Which station is each hotel actually near — and how far on foot?

Gongdeok and Sinchon are the densest clusters. Gongdeok has three properties within a 2–4 minute walk; Sinchon has two within 3–4 minutes. On the Yeouido side, the options split between a 2-minute and a 9-minute walk from National Assembly Station, while Yeongdeungpo and Singil sit in the 7–8 minute band.

The three Gongdeok properties ultimately differ on price. A 2–4 minute walk difference is barely noticeable, yet listed rates span from USD 137.9 to 194.95. If your itinerary only needs the transfer-hub advantage, picking the cheapest room in this group is the rational call.

AREX express vs. all-stop and Line 9 express — what’s actually different?

The three trains are fundamentally different animals. The express runs nonstop only between Seoul Station and Incheon Airport, so you cannot board it at Gongdeok, Hongik Univ. or Gimpo Airport at all. Line 9 express, by contrast, shines when heading from the Gimpo Airport side toward Yeouido and Gangnam.

For an early-morning flight, the first train matters more than the last. At Gongdeok Station, the first AREX train toward Incheon Airport passes at 05:24 on weekdays, and the first Line 5 train heading past Gimpo Airport toward Banghwa is at 05:38. From National Assembly Station on Yeouido’s west side, the first Line 9 train toward Gimpo Airport departs at 05:42. If you need to be at the airport earlier than that, the subway is not the answer.

Stay in Yeouido and Hangang Park is right there — or is it?

No. Even within Yeouido, walking times differ by more than 7x depending on the station. If Hangang Park is on your list for a morning walk or the night view, these numbers matter more than the hotel’s star rating.

Both Yeouido hotels in this guide are within walking distance of National Assembly Station — meaning the park is a 20-minute walk away. It is faster to ride the subway to Yeouinaru, and the route of transferring from Line 9 to Line 5 at National Assembly Station toward the park checks in at about 10 minutes. In short, judge a Yeouido hotel by business-district access and quiet, not by riverside walkability.

Are there cheaper options? And when should you avoid this area?

The budget end of this area is Yeongdeungpo and Singil. Yeongdeungpo Hotel Soo, about 7 minutes on foot from Yeongdeungpo Station, is the cheapest in this guide at USD 31.45 a night, followed by Toyoko Inn Seoul Yeongdeungpo (an ~8-minute walk from Singil Station) at USD 59.7. Just note Hotel Soo is a small 23-room property with check-in from 18:00 (21:00 on Fri/Sat/Sun and holidays) and no parking. It does not suit plans to arrive in the afternoon, drop your bags and head back out.

There are three situations where you can skip this area altogether. First, if your itinerary centers on the palaces, Myeongdong or Dongdaemun, staying here means riding the subway for every outing. Second, if you plan to spend evenings in Hongdae’s bar and food streets, a hotel near Hongik Univ. Station beats Sinchon. Third, if you want the AREX express to Incheon Airport, the express does not stop in this area — look near Seoul Station instead.

Both names read like riverside stays, but the actual addresses are in Gangnam-gu and Seocho-gu. Keep them as candidates only if your trip includes Gangnam.
