Yongsan and Itaewon share a district but feel nothing alike as places to sleep. On the Yongsan Station side, it’s all about KTX and subway transfer flow; on the Itaewon Station side, it’s the dining-and-drinking scene that stays open past midnight. The north slope of Namsan, on the Chungmuro–Myeongdong border, is a third option.

Same skybridge, yet Grand Mercure lists at USD 307.99 and ibis Styles at USD 167.55 — close to double, for essentially identical access. If you’re loaded down with luggage and KTX and subway transfers anchor your itinerary, booking the cheapest room in this complex beats paying for brand tier.

How many minutes from Yongsan and Itaewon stations to the main sights?

The winner flips with the destination. Toward Hongdae, Yongsan Station is dramatically faster (about 8 minutes direct on the Gyeongui–Jungang Line). Toward Myeongdong and Gyeongbokgung the two stations are comparable, and toward Gangnam Itaewon Station is about 6 minutes quicker.

The number worth noting is the 8 minutes from Yongsan Station to Hongik Univ. The Gyeongui–Jungang Line runs from Yongsan through Gongdeok straight to Hongik Univ., no transfer needed. The catch: this line runs on wider headways than subway Lines 2–6, so miss a train and the wait can outlast the ride. Best to check the timetable in advance.

What’s inconvenient about an Itaewon stay?

Two things. First, the area around Itaewon Station is a late-night district, so weekend nights bring noise — rooms a block in from the main strip can still hear it with the windows shut. Second, Line 6 only crosses the northern half of the city, so anything toward Gangnam or Jamsil forces a transfer. That’s why the Gangnam route in the table above ends with a walk from Sinsa Station.

Itaewon’s upside is just as clear, though. International restaurants and bars cluster within a 5-minute walk, and plenty stay open late — so you can wrap up your evening near the hotel. You’ll stop cutting nights short to chase the last train.

Any cheaper options — and when should you skip this area?

The cheapest tier is guesthouses. Namsan Guesthouse sits about 150 m from Myeongdong Station — a 5-minute walk up the hill toward Exit E — with a feed-based listed rate of USD 37.09 a night (roughly ₩52,000). It’s not a private-room hotel, so check the fine print, but for a sleep-and-go itinerary the Klook rates alone show the gap.

There are also three cases where you don’t need this zone at all. First, if your itinerary centers on palaces, Bukchon and Insadong, the Gyeongbokgung direction from Itaewon Station is about 26 minutes, so a Jongno walk-up stay wins. Second, for an early-morning Incheon departure, staying near Seoul Station or Gongdeok — where AREX stops — saves a transfer. Third, if walking-distance shopping is the goal, the heart of Myeongdong is denser.

If you’d rather be on the north slope of Namsan, there’s an option linked to Chungmuro Station’s basement level — a compromise that keeps Myeongdong within walking distance while dodging Itaewon’s late-night noise.
