At midnight in central Seoul, the Bosingak bell traditionally sounds 33 times while the crowd counts in the New Year. A warm coat matters, but your route home matters just as much. The official city calendar already lists the upcoming ceremony; its detailed program and late-night transport arrangements are separate questions.
The short answer
- Bosingak is listed for December 31, 2026–January 1, 2027 on Seoul's official festival calendar. December 31 is Thursday; January 1 is Friday.
- Detailed 2026 timings and transport are not confirmed in the notices checked on October 16. The tables below are explicitly 2025→2026 examples.
- The traditional highlight is 33 bell strikes at midnight. Do not assume last year's 02:00 subway service or Jonggak restrictions will be repeated unchanged.
What is Seoul's Bosingak bell ceremony?
It is the city’s New Year’s Eve bell-ringing at Bosingak Pavilion on Jongno. Seoul’s 2026 festival page lists performances, bell-ringing and artwork across December 31–January 1, without a detailed hourly schedule. The city’s dedicated bell page still describes the previous edition.

Why 33 strikes?
The number recalls the Joseon-era dawn bell that signaled the opening of the city gates. Seoul's official history dates the modern New Year's Eve ceremony to 1953. Citizen representatives also take part alongside invited guests; this year's names need their own announcement.
What time does the New Year's Eve program start?
The 2026 start time is not yet confirmed here. Last year’s official event page listed 22:50 on December 31 to 00:20 on January 1; a city press release rounded the start to 23:00. Read the table as a previous-year example and check the final December announcement before deciding when to arrive.
Bosingak program — 2025→2026 reference only
| Time last year | Program |
|---|---|
| 22:50 | Pre-show performances |
| Before midnight | Introduction of citizen bell-ringers |
| Just before 00:00 | Countdown |
| 00:00 | 33 bell strikes and media artwork |
| After midnight | Post-show concert |
| 00:20 | Program ends |
Last year’s performances were open without registration. Seoul also streamed the ceremony on its official YouTube channel and Live Seoul. For the upcoming edition, confirm both access and streaming information in the new notice rather than relying on a video archive with an ambiguous year.
How should you handle the crowds?
Choose your exit and meeting point before the countdown. The intersection can be densely packed, and access routes may change under crowd controls. Follow staff directions and keep stairs, barriers and emergency access clear. Seoul’s live crowd guide explains the city congestion data.
A practical plan for the evening
- Agree on a meeting place away from the main intersection. Choose a recognizable shop or building in advance.
- Locate toilets before joining the crowd. Check Smart Seoul Map and the event's on-site information boards.
- Leave room to change plans. A place farther back or the official livestream can be more comfortable if access is restricted.
Will trains run late, and which roads close?
A 2026 year-end extension has not been confirmed in the notices checked. The previous plan below is useful for understanding the area, but it is not a timetable for December 31, 2026. In particular, 02:00 meant arrival at the final station, not a last departure from every station.
Traffic measures — December 31, 2025–January 1, 2026 only
| Measure | Previous arrangement | Previous hours |
|---|---|---|
| Road closures | Jongno: Sejong-daero–Jongno 2-ga; Cheonggye-bukro: Cheonggye Plaza–Cheonggye 2-ga; Ujeongguk-ro: Gongpyeong Rotary–Gwanggyo | Dec 31 18:00–Jan 1 07:00 |
| Jonggak Station | Line 1 trains passed without stopping | Dec 31 23:00–Jan 1 01:00 |
| Subway extension | Designated Lines 1–9 sections, Ui-Sinseol and Sillim; 104 extra trains | Until about 02:00 at terminal |
| Buses | 45 nearby routes had late service; road closures caused detours | Until about 02:00 |
| Shared mobility | 16 Ddareungi stations closed; e-scooter / e-bike rental and returns restricted | Scooters: Dec 31 18:00–Jan 1 06:00 |
Last year the city directed travelers toward City Hall (Lines 1 and 2), Jongno 3-ga (1, 3 and 5), Euljiro 1-ga (2) and Gwanghwamun (5) while Jonggak was skipped. Check TOPIS and your operator for your actual destination, especially trips beyond Seoul. Seoul late-night transport covers the alternatives.
Sort out the return trip before midnight
Save the route and last departure for your destination once the 2026 plan appears, top up your transit card, and allow time to walk out of controlled streets. A taxi pickup immediately beside Bosingak may be impractical. An overnight stay within walking distance can simplify the evening.
Where else can you count down in Seoul?
Gwanghwamun and DDP are places to monitor, alongside district and private events. The examples here describe 2025→2026, not confirmed 2026→2027 alternatives. Each organizer announces its own program and access rules.

Events can change close to the date
Weather, crowd controls and public circumstances can alter performances and access. Check the organizer's notice on the day, even if the annual calendar lists the event.
What should you wear on New Year's Eve?
Dress for standing outside below freezing. KMA’s 1991–2020 December normal for Seoul is 0.2°C overall and -3.4°C for the average daily low; that is climate background, not a forecast for this night. Wear a padded coat, ear-covering hat, gloves and warm footwear, and check the day’s forecast. Indoor winter activities offer a warm break.
What can you do on January 1?
Keep the morning flexible after a late night. Some travelers head for the first sunrise; others sleep in and share tteokguk, sliced-rice-cake soup. Check opening hours for individual shops and attractions on the New Year’s Day holiday rather than assuming everything follows its usual schedule.
For a longer winter stay, combine Seoul Christmas, winter illuminations, the ice-rink guide and Christmas cakes. Winter street snacks are another easy stop before the evening.
