In Korea, a photo studio isn’t just a place to get your passport picture taken anymore. Teenagers book one for every birthday. Twenty-somethings mark each new semester with a fresh set. Thirty-somethings line up a shoot before a career move or a wedding. The problem: search for “Seoul photo studio” and you’ll get hundreds of results — but they’re a messy jumble of photographer-run, appointment-only studios and self-service booths where you press the shutter yourself. What follows is a clean split between the two, built around the studios that actually fill up in 2026.

The Short Answer

  • The genre's archetype is SIHYUNHADA (4 direct-run locations: Gangnam, Seongsu, Hongdae, Dangsan). You describe yourself with adjective cards and a color book — they photograph you in that palette
  • Price ladder: ID photo 30,000–50,000 won → single profile shot 70,000–130,000 won → concept editorial with hair and makeup 200,000–400,000 won
  • For concept shoots: Seongsu's Eyes'U (from 80,000 won per cut), Sinsa's OCTOBEE (actor headshots are their strength), Hongdae's SHIHWA (rotating seasonal concepts)
  • Best value: Woori-Dongne Photo Studio (hair + makeup + profile in one stop, 110,000–130,000 won), Photo By Hongdae (ID photos from 30,000 won)
  • Black-and-white and film-inspired spaces are mostly self-shoot formats — treat them as a separate genre from photographer-run studios

Why Are Korean 20-Somethings Booking Photo Studios?

Because the meaning of an ID photo has changed. In 2022, Daehaginaeil’s trend media outlet Carrot coined a name for this generation: the PhotoPress Generation — people who express themselves through photos. Carrot traces the starting point to the personal color craze of 2015–2016 and the rise of custom ID photos. Today’s twenty-somethings grew up as teenagers already absorbing the idea that even an ID photo is a form of self-expression.

Two other forces piled on top. One is the vanishing of the school yearbook. When the institution stopped organizing those life-marker portraits, individuals filled the gap with self-booked editorial shoots. The other is a social landscape where first impressions happen on a screen. A 2020 master’s thesis from SNU’s Interdisciplinary Program in Gender Studies — “A Study on the In-Life Photo Culture of Women in Their Twenties” — argues that young women “curate a self-concept and construct their own narrative” on social media, staging themselves the way a celebrity would for a magazine spread. Photos function as your de facto first impression.

So in Korea, booking a profile shoot isn’t vanity. It’s something closer to a rite of passage. Job-hunting season. Discharge from military service. Hitting your goal weight. The last month of being twenty-nine. The reasons differ — but the impulse is the same: let me capture who I am right now.

Unmanned Photo Booths vs. Profile Studios: What's the Difference?

In one sentence: a booth captures a moment; a profile studio builds an image. Booths cost 4,000–6,000 won per person and wrap in five minutes. Profile studios are reservation-only: a photographer sets up the lighting, spends 40 minutes to four hours shooting, then retouches each selected image individually and delivers high-resolution files.

The market trajectory is telling. According to NTS data obtained by Representative Cha Gyu-geun’s office (Rebuilding Korea Party), revenue in the instant photo booth industry rose from ₩134.4 billion in 2020 to ₩319.6 billion in 2024 — a 2.4× jump. But closures rose even faster, from 176 to 611 over the same period — a 3.5× increase. When closures outpace revenue growth, the sector is already saturated and consolidating.

📊 Instant Photo Booth Industry Revenue & Closures (NTS data, reported February 2026)

YearRevenue (tax base)Closures
2020₩134.4B176
2021₩133.7B195
2022₩247.1B296
2023₩290.6B514
2024₩319.6B611

On the other side of the market, appointment-based studios — the ones where you pay to get one proper image made — are expanding their footprint. The studios below sit at the center of that shift.

Note: No Official Profile Studio Statistics

In the Korean Standard Industrial Classification, 73302 covers commercial photography, and portrait photography technically falls under a separate subcategory — but KOSIS does not publish a standalone "profile photo studio" statistic. That's why all the market figures in this article come from the instant photo (self-booth) industry.

SIHYUNHADA — Gangnam · Seongsu · Hongdae · Dangsan

This brand launched in 2016 from a disarmingly simple question: “Why does an ID photo have to look like an ID photo?” It began as a project to shoot 1,000 people in an ID-photo format — and has since earned exhibitions at the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia and the Dior Photography Award invitational. The industry sees it as the moment commercial ID photography crossed into art.

The process is what sets it apart. You pick from a set of adjective cards and a color book to describe yourself, and the photographer — they call them recordists — builds the lighting and backdrop around those choices. Because the briefing happens through color and mood rather than language, it works surprisingly well for international visitors. The retouching philosophy is different, too: instead of the default bigger-eyes-slimmer-jaw approach, they’ll sometimes leave a mole or a scar untouched. Recordists are ranked by experience (Drawer 1 through Drawer 5), and their portfolios are public before you book.

A few things to know upfront: they do not provide unedited originals, and once the final image is delivered, re-edits aren’t possible. No wardrobe, props, or makeup are provided either — consistent with their philosophy of “recording how you looked that year, as you were.”

Don't Be Late

Bukchon Photo Studio has a strict policy: 10 minutes late and your booking is automatically canceled with no refund. Gyeongbokgung snaps have fixed shooting permits with time windows, so give yourself a generous buffer.

STYLEGRAPHER — Nonhyeon

An ultra-premium line aimed squarely at overseas K-pop fans. One concept, three hours, starts at 2.2 million won. Three concepts over seven hours runs 3.3 million won. The price includes pre-shoot email consultation and planning, full makeup, hair, wardrobe (jewelry and shoes included), and styling — plus all unedited originals and two high-resolution retouched images per concept.

The booking requirements are exacting: a minimum 30–40 day lead time, and for the pre-shoot consultation you’ll need to submit three face photos, four full-body photos, a 30-second self-introduction video, an interview form, and a concept board. This isn’t an everyday option for a Korean twenty-something — it’s closer to a curated production that recreates an idol concept.

Rising Neighborhood Studios in Seongsu & Hongdae

Beyond the big brands, solo-photographer neighborhood studios are multiplying fast. They’re less booked out and more affordable — a solid pick for your first profile shoot.

Why Black-and-White & Film Studios Are a Different Category

Because most of them are self-shoot formats. The black-and-white photo spaces trending lately aren’t unmanned booths — but they aren’t photographer-shot either. You operate the shutter yourself with a remote, then pick a few favorites for retouching. It’s a different experience from the appointment studios above, and it’s worth knowing the distinction before you book.

4 Things to Check Before You Book

  • Do you get the unedited originals? — SIHYUNHADA doesn't give them at all. STUDIOPEOPLE gives them only as ~850px low-res files
  • Is hair and makeup included? — Usually separate, adding 30,000–50,000 won
  • How long does retouching take? — From same-day (Eyes'U) to 7–8 days (STUDIOPEOPLE)
  • What's the cancellation policy? — STUDIOPEOPLE: no refund within 2 days. STYLEGRAPHER: full forfeiture within 9 days

Can Foreign Visitors Book These Studios?

Yes — three routes, all viable.

  1. In-house multilingual sites — SIHYUNHADA operates a Korean, English, and Chinese (Simplified) official site. STUDIOPEOPLE runs a dedicated English page with a separate booking guide for overseas customers.
  2. Multilingual booking platforms — Creatrip is the de facto standard. SIHYUNHADA Hongdae Space has a platform-exclusive product here, with 24-hour English and Chinese support and free cancellation up to three days before.
  3. Studios with English-speaking staff — Eyes’U, OCTOBEE, and STYLEGRAPHER can handle consultations in English on site.
