Templestay — “rest” vs. “experience,” what’s the difference?

The rest format centers on meditation and quiet personal time, while the experience format has you actually take part in temple life: temple etiquette, barugongyang (the traditional monastic meal), 108 prostrations, lotus-lantern making and more. Experience programs usually run only on weekends, and many temples swap them for the rest format on weekdays. If attendance drops to three or fewer people, a booking made as “experience” can quietly switch to “rest” — so if you’re a small group or going on a weekday, it’s safer not to count on the full experience program.

Do I have to join the dawn ceremony at a templestay?

Joining is basically the default. The dawn ceremony usually starts around 04:30, and you’re expected to be seated for it regardless of your faith. That said, you can skip the religious acts themselves — bowing and chanting — if they conflict with your beliefs.
