The short answer

  • The Cheonggyecheon Seoul Lantern Festival is free. In the 2025-2026 season it ran December 12–January 18, daily from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. (previous-season baseline).
  • Paid light gardens like Herb Island and the Garden of Morning Calm charge roughly ₩10,000–12,000 (2025-2026 season).
  • Seoul's January average temperature is -1.9℃. Night illuminations only show after dark, so it feels even colder.

This guide covers the winter season from December 2026 through February 2027. Most winter-light write-ups just list the spots, but this one first splits things into what you can see for free and what you pay for, then covers how cold outdoor viewing actually gets and where to escape when it’s too cold. As of August 2026, exact dates for the 2026-2027 season are mostly unannounced, so confirmed facts are stated as such, and the rest is flagged as based on previous seasons.

Where Can You See Winter Lights in Seoul for Free?

Cheonggyecheon and Myeongdong. Both are free to watch from the street, and they’re the biggest nighttime light displays in central Seoul.

Lotte Town Light switches on for the first time this season

Lotte Department Store's new media facade "Lotte Town Light," on the Young Plaza exterior in Myeongdong, is 77 m wide and 21 m tall — the size of four basketball courts — and bigger than Shinsegae's existing facade. It's due to start officially from the Christmas season in December 2026, making the 2026-2027 season covered here effectively its debut. The exact switch-on date and hours are not yet officially announced.

What's Different About the Paid Light Gardens?

Scale and location. Herb Island (Pocheon) and the Garden of Morning Calm (Gapyeong) sit not in central Seoul but in the Gyeonggi suburbs, and they flood entire multi-acre grounds with lights — far wider than Cheonggyecheon.

If Cheonggyecheon alone is enough for you, there's no need to trek out to Gyeonggi. The free Cheonggyecheon–Myeongdong combo makes a complete evening walk you can finish in 30 minutes to an hour, right in the city center. The paid suburban gardens are the right call if you want "a bigger light display" or want to "pair them with other day-trip stops nearby."

Heading toward Pocheon, there are also tours that bundle other nearby sights. These aren’t Herb Island’s own admission tickets, but bookable products in the same Pocheon–Gapyeong area right now.

How Cold Does Outdoor Light Viewing Really Get?

January is the coldest. Seoul’s January average temperature is -1.9℃, and December is the stretch when the average daily high drops from 7℃ to 2℃. Climate records consistently explain that the city sits directly in the path of the Siberian High, so it feels colder than other places at the same latitude.

Lights only shine after dark, so it's colder than you think

  • Cheonggyecheon and Myeongdong lights look best after about 6 p.m. — a time when temperatures sit near the nighttime low, not the daytime high. Safest to assume it feels colder than the published average.
  • In wide-open gardens like Herb Island or the Garden of Morning Calm, you'll stand around taking photos for long stretches and lose body heat faster than indoors. Bring hand warmers and insulated gloves.
  • Precipitation itself is light (67.6 mm for the whole winter), so it's dry cold rather than snow or rain that gets you.

Too Cold? What to Do Indoors Instead

Ice rinks and hot springs are the classic indoor or warm-water fallbacks. An ice rink is still a cold-weather activity, but being indoors blocks the wind; hot springs are perfect for warming up before or after an outdoor light schedule.

Icheon Miranda Spa Plus hot-spring water park

One to one-and-a-half hours from Seoul, close enough to pair with a suburban light garden in a single day. As an indoor hot-water facility, it works regardless of the temperature.

Prices and availability as of August 2026; vary by date and option. Skip this course if you only plan to see Cheonggyecheon and Myeongdong.

🚗 When you want to combine hot springs with activities in one day

Ganghwa Island hot spring, luge & mountain bike day tour

An Incheon-area course bundling the Seongmodo hot spring with luge, mountain biking, or horseback riding. You can schedule outdoor activities and the hot spring on the same day, so it's for when you'd rather move half your plan indoors than cancel the whole day because of the cold.

Prices and availability as of August 2026; vary by date and option.

Can You Add More Stops on the Way to the Suburban Light Gardens?

Heading toward Yeoju or Icheon, there are also courses that combine outlet shopping with cafés. It’s not a ticket for the Garden of Morning Calm’s own Five-Color Starlight Garden Festival, but a private tour you can stop into along the same direction.

The Lotte Premium Outlet & Café Garden Tour (private, from Seoul) pairs outlet shopping with a café garden that has lights — so if you go expecting a major light festival, the scale difference may disappoint. For a big light garden, Herb Island or the Garden of Morning Calm above is the better fit.

There’s also the option of touring Pocheon’s Sanjeong Lake area on a private tour. The Sanjeong Lake & Art Valley private tour covers the Pocheon area in a day with no public-transit transfers.
