Student vibe: why Sinchon/Ewha over Hongdae right now?

Seoul’s northwest youth scene once belonged to Sinchon. Ringed by Yonsei, Ewha Womans, Sogang and Hongik universities, the Sinchon rotary and the streets in front of Ewha were among the busiest in 1980s–90s Seoul. The Ewha strip in particular was called one of Gangbuk’s three biggest commercial districts (with Myeongdong and Jongno) — a “fashion district #1” full of individual clothing and accessory shops, a launchpad for trends. The now-giant E-Land group started here in a tiny Ewha-area shop; this alley was a cradle of Korean fashion and retail.

From the mid-2000s the current shifted. As online shopping grew and young people chased “newer, more distinctive” districts, the crown for northwest youth passed to Hongdae. Hongdae absorbed club, live-music and indie culture, then commerce and tourism, and exploded in scale — today it is one of the most tourist-heavy districts in Seoul. The streets are lively, but it feels less like “where local students hang out” and more like “where travellers from everywhere gather.”

For a traveller: if Hongdae is “a student district that became a tourist attraction,” Sinchon/Ewha is “a student district students still fill.” Sinchon/Ewha has more international students than before, but it never got as touristy as Hongdae. Because the district runs on students, prices are reasonable, and on a weekday afternoon it fills with students out for a meal or coffee between classes. If you want to walk the ordinary day of a Seoul student rather than the Seoul of tourist photos, Sinchon/Ewha is the closer answer. (Some say Sinchon isn’t the powerhouse it once was — but flip that around and it simply means it’s less touristified.)

Starbucks Ewha: Korea’s very first store, and a symbol of the district

No account of Sinchon/Ewha is complete without Starbucks Ewha. On 27 July 1999, the very first Starbucks store in Korea (store #1) opened right in front of Ewha Womans University. The fact that the chain chose this spot for its debut — because Ewha was then the trendiest district in the country — makes the café itself a piece of evidence for “peak Ewha.”

For the brand’s 20th anniversary in 2019 it was refitted as a premium Reserve store; in September 2024 it dropped the Reserve title and reopened as a special store foregrounding its “store #1” status, now running store-#1-exclusive drinks, dedicated merch and a tumbler-engraving service. The Ewha Womans campus is famous for its architecture (the ECC and main hall), so between cafés it’s worth a quick stroll just inside the front gate.
