Incheon’s newest district has no old centre to speak of. Until 1995, Geomdan was a township of Gimpo County, a place of orchards, vineyards, family graves and small factories on the edge of the capital region. Then it was moved into Incheon’s Seo-gu, and the fields gave way to Geomdan New Town. On July 1, 2026, the area north of the Gyeongin Ara Waterway left Seo-gu and became 검단구 Geomdan-gu, Incheon’s first new autonomous district in 31 years.

This is a district for people who live here, and it does not pretend otherwise. There is no palace, no famous market and no sunset spot: Jeongseojin, which many guides placed in Geomdan, turned out to be in neighbouring Seohae-gu. What Geomdan does have is a flower park built inside the capital region’s landfill, a free museum of the area’s prehistory, a brand-new subway extension, and a row of local restaurants around the Incheon Line 2 stations that the commuters of the new town fill every evening.

The short answer

  • Where: northwest Incheon, between the Ara Waterway and Gimpo. AREX to Gyeyang, then Incheon Line 1; or AREX to Geomam, then Incheon Line 2 north.
  • Best for: repeat visitors, families and people curious about how a Korean new town is built. Plan a half day around one draw, not a full sightseeing day.
  • Must-see: the Dream Park Wildflower Complex (April to November, free), plus the free Geomdan Prehistory Museum.
  • Must-eat: yukgaejang at Danpungnamu near Wanggil Station, or hand-cut kalguksu at Sarangbang Kalguksu.

Is Geomdan-gu part of Seo-gu?

It was until June 30, 2026; since July 1 it is a district of its own. Incheon’s reorganization took the city from two counties and eight districts to two counties and nine. The law that created Geomdan-gu named seven neighbourhoods (dong) north of the Ara Waterway: Geomdan, Bullo-Daegok, Wondang, Dangha, Oryu-Wanggil, Majeon and Ara, about 47.7 km² in all. The rest of old Seo-gu, south of the canal, took the new name Seohae-gu on the same day. The new district office works from a temporary modular building in Dangha-dong; Wikitree reported in October 2026 that a site in Bullo-dong has been fixed for the permanent one.

Kakao Map switched to the new district names on July 2, 2026, but many bus stops, apps and blog posts written before July still say Seo-gu (서구). If you search in Korean, try both names.

Where is Jeongseojin, then?

정서진 Jeongseojin, the sunset plaza at the sea end of the Ara Waterway, is in Seohae-gu. The Seohae-gu office lists it at Jeongseojin-namro 95, Seohae-gu, and ran free kayak and rubber-boat classes there from July to October 2026. The confusion comes from the land register: the plaza and the Ara Tower terminal stand on reclaimed land recorded under the name Oryu-dong, and Oryu-dong is otherwise a Geomdan neighbourhood. Some listings, including the national tourism database, therefore still show Geomdan-gu. For a visit it hardly matters: Jeongseojin is a short taxi ride from Geomdan, and we cover it below as a neighbour.

How do you get to Geomdan from Seoul?

By AREX, then one of two Incheon lines. The new town in the east (Ara, Wondang, Bullo) is on the Incheon Line 1 extension from Gyeyang. The older western neighbourhoods (Wanggil, Majeon, Geomdan Sageori, Oryu) are on Incheon Line 2, which runs north from Geomam and ends at Geomdan Oryu.

Before the extension, one Ara-dong resident told Kyeongin Ilbo, it took 20–30 minutes by bus just to reach Gyeyang Station. A Seoul Line 5 extension through Geomdan passed its feasibility review in March 2026 (Herald Corporation), and the district is lobbying for stations at Wondang Sageori and Bullo, but it is years from opening. Use a T-money card on all of these; see our T-money guide.

On a layover? Geomdan is not a natural layover trip. AREX from Incheon Airport Terminal 1 to Geomam takes about 24 minutes, but if you have a long connection, Cheongna and Jeongseojin in Seohae-gu are closer and more rewarding. Leaving the airport means entering Korea, so check the K-ETA rules for your nationality and our Incheon layover plans.

What is Geomdan known for?

Three things: it used to be Gimpo, it holds the capital region’s landfill, and it is one of Incheon’s largest new towns. In 1914 the Japanese colonial administration merged three Gimpo townships into Geomdan-myeon, and on March 1, 1995, the township was transferred to Incheon’s Seo-gu. Gimpo asked for it back in the early years; it never got it.

The 수도권매립지 Sudokwon Landfill, shared by Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi, lies in the district’s west. It is also the reason for the area’s best-known rule change: from January 1, 2026, the capital region in principle stopped burying household rubbish untreated, with exceptions for disasters and plant shutdowns (Chosun Ilbo, December 2025). Part of the site has been turned into the flower park described below.

The third identity is the new town. Geomdan New Town spreads across Wondang, Bullo, Dangha and Ara-dong, and it is still being built. Its final phase is around Geomdan Lake Park Station, where the lake park the station is named after was due for completion at the end of 2026; the Incheon Ilbo reported in August 2026 that it opens to the public only after LH hands it over to the city. An archaeology museum for finds from the new-town digs is due to start construction in November 2026 and open in 2029.

Dream Park Wildflower Complex — The landfill management corporation turned a former coal-ash storage area inside the Sudokwon Landfill into a park of themed gardens, wetland and wildflower meadows with about 300 plant species, Korea Tourism Organization data says. It is the closest thing Geomdan has to a seasonal event. In spring a 2 km tunnel of Yoshino cherries lines the path; the 2026 cherry walk ran April 10–19, Dailian reported. In autumn the park holds a chrysanthemum festival, with pink muhly, cosmos and flower topiaries; visitor posts give the 2026 dates as October 16–25. Outside the festivals it is a quiet walk. The address is Jawonsunhwan-ro 170 in Baekseok-dong, and there is no rail station nearby, so take a taxi; parking is free. Our story on Haneul Park in Seoul tells a similar landfill-to-park tale.

Geomdan Prehistory Museum — In 1999, during land readjustment work, Geomdan produced the first Paleolithic site ever found in Incheon, and Bronze Age houses have turned up since. The museum, a branch of the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum, opened on November 27, 2008, in Wondang-dong. The ground-floor permanent gallery covers Korean and Incheon prehistory, with a Bronze Age house and a stone-cist tomb reconstructed as they were excavated; the collection holds about 11,000 artefacts. Upstairs, the children’s exhibition on Incheon’s dolmens runs from July 14, 2026, to May 16, 2027, with a full-size copy of the dolmen at Daegok-dong in Geomdan. Allow an hour, more with children.

Geomdan New Town and the Line 1 extension — The 6.8 km extension added Ara, Sin-Geomdan Jungang and Geomdan Lake Park stations, and about 130,000 people in Ara-dong, Wondang-dong and Bullo-dong gained a station, Kyeongin Ilbo reported. Riding it is the quickest way to see the new town: towers, wide boulevards, schools and cranes. Around Ara Station you will find the district court and prosecutors’ office branches and a strip of new restaurants and bars. Geomdan Lake Park Station still stands beside building sites; come back after the lake park opens.

Ara Waterway cycle path — The Gyeongin Ara Waterway, Korea’s first man-made canal, runs 18 km from the Han River to the Yellow Sea, with a cycle path along the canal. At the sea end, an arch marked “Seoul 21 km, Busan 633 km” signals the start of the national cross-country cycle route, and riders collect their first stamp at the Ara West Sea Lock certification centre. Wikitree reported that the district office was looking in October 2026 at closing a gap in the path between Gyeyangcheon stream and the canal. For the canal’s waterfall and glass-floored observatory, see our Gyeyang-gu guide.

Jeongseojin, just across the line — The name means “due west”, the western counterpart of Jeongdongjin on the east coast: measured from Gwanghwamun in Seoul, it is where the mainland meets the West Sea. The white, pebble-shaped 노을종 Sunset Bell, named by former culture minister Lee O-young and unveiled in 2012, frames the setting sun. The Ara Tower next door has a free observatory on the 23rd floor looking out to Yeongjong Bridge and Incheon Bridge. K-water’s directions are bus 44 from Cheongna International City Station; from Geomdan, a taxi is simpler. It is in Seohae-gu — see our Seohae-gu guide.

Where do locals eat in Geomdan?

The new town is full of chains. The places locals talk about sit in the older streets between Wanggil and Geomdan Sageori stations on Incheon Line 2. All four had visitor posts in September or October 2026; prices are quoted from posts dated between late 2025 and October 2026.

Danpungnamu (Wanggil-dong) — A house restaurant with a garden near Wanggil Station, where Geomdan office workers come for 육개장 yukgaejang, spicy beef and scallion soup. There is also a clear, mild baekgaejang for children and anyone who avoids chilli, plus big dumplings. Groups book ahead for duck: a September 2026 reviewer paid 53,000 won for a whole roast duck, cooked on a griddle with mushrooms and chives and finished as fried rice. An October 2026 post put the yukgaejang at 10,000 won a bowl. It opens at 10:00; one October 2026 post lists Sunday closing at 17:00. Parking is tight at dinner.

Sarangbang Kalguksu (Wondang-daero, near Wanggil Station) — An older noodle shop where the owner cuts the dough as you order. The kalguksu comes in clear broth with chopped green chilli on the side; in summer, regulars order the thick soy-milk kongguksu made with the same fresh noodles. Mung-bean pancakes and kimchi dumplings round out the menu. Reviewers in September and November 2025 paid 10,000 won for either noodle dish. A banner inside advertises its appearance on the TV show Misik Club as a long-time favourite of host Kim Gu-ra. It opens around 10:30 and has parking.

Bakdaljae Makchang Gui, main branch (near Geomdan Sageori Station) — An old-fashioned grill house, about eight minutes on foot from exit 1 of Geomdan Sageori Station, that is full by 19:00 on a Saturday. Pork 막창 makchang (intestine) and dwitgogi (mixed off-cuts) come out already grilled, with spring-onion kimchi and soybean-paste soup. An October 2026 post listed makchang at 11,000 won for 250 g and dwitgogi at 12,000 won for 300 g. It opens Monday to Saturday, 16:00–23:00 (last order 22:30), and closes on Sundays. Order the fried rice early; it takes a while when the room is busy. There is no car park.

Jeongga Myeoneuri Bolttaegi (near Geomdan Sageori Station) — A cod-cheek house in the restaurant streets by Geomdan Sageori Station. The bolttaegi soup is a clear broth with cod cheeks, roe and milt, the kind of bowl Koreans eat the morning after drinking. A December 2025 post listed bolttaegi haejangguk at 10,000 won and the sharing hotpot from 38,000 won. It opens 08:00–21:00 and closes on Tuesdays, according to an October 2026 post, so it doubles as a breakfast stop.

What does a day in Geomdan look like?

Practical tip

  • Watch the days: the museum and Dream Park close on Mondays, Bolttaegi on Tuesdays and Bakdaljae on Sundays. Dream Park is closed from December to March.
  • Taxis help. Geomdan's sights are spread out and the bus network is still catching up with the new town; keep a taxi app ready, or see our guide to renting a car in Korea.
  • Old names everywhere: signs and blogs from before July 2026 say Seo-gu. Jeongseojin is listed under either Geomdan-gu or Seohae-gu depending on the source; the Seohae-gu office treats it as its own.
  • Seasons: mid-April for the cherry walk, late October for the chrysanthemum festival, and autumn evenings for Jeongseojin sunsets.
