Look up from the end of Gimpo Airport’s runway and the green ridge to the west is Gyeyangsan. At 395 m it is the highest peak on mainland Incheon, and the district around it, Gyeyang-gu, is where the airport’s fence ends and Incheon begins. Most people pass through without stopping: Gyeyang Station is the first AREX stop after Gimpo Airport, the place where airport trains meet Incheon Line 1.
The name is older than the city around it. In 1215, during the Goryeo dynasty, this area became Gyeyang Dohobu, a regional seat that oversaw the lower Han River. It was later renamed Bupyeong, and the old government office still stands in Gyesan-dong, inside Gyeyang-gu, not in today’s Bupyeong-gu. Today Gyeyang is mostly apartment blocks, schools and commuter stations. It does not try to be a tourist district. What it offers is a city mountain with a Three Kingdoms fortress on its shoulder, a stretch of canal with a waterfall, and neighbourhood food that nobody has polished for visitors.
The short answer
- Where: northern inland Incheon, right next to Gimpo Airport. AREX from Seoul Station or Hongik Univ. to Gyeyang Station, then Incheon Line 1 for the mountain.
- Best for: a half-day hike with airport and sea views, a canal walk or bike ride, and residents' food. Not a priority on a first trip to Korea.
- Must-see: Gyeyangsan and the Gyeyang Fortress, a Historic Site since 2020, plus the fortress museum at the foot of the trail.
- Must-eat: oak-grilled duck at Hayarobi, a certified Baeknyeon Gage (century shop), or a bowl of pork gukbap in Gyesan-dong after the hike.
Is Gyeyang-gu worth visiting?
For some travellers, yes — but plan a half-day around one draw rather than a full sightseeing day. Gyeyang has no palace, no market famous outside Incheon and no street built for visitors. It is worth the trip if one of these describes you:
- Hikers who want a real summit near Seoul without a long bus ride. From the top you see Gimpo Airport and Seoul to the east, Yeongjongdo and Ganghwa Island to the west.
- Cyclists and walkers on the Gyeongin Ara Waterway path, whose most dramatic stretch, the gorge cut through Gyeyangsan, is in this district.
- Travellers flying from Gimpo Airport with a few spare hours, or staying near it. Gyeyang Station is one stop away; for hotels on the Seoul side see our Gimpo Airport hotels guide.
- Volleyball fans. Incheon Gyeyang Gymnasium is the home court of the Korean Air Jumbos — see our V-League game guide.
On a long Incheon Airport layover, Gyeyang is technically on the way, since AREX runs from the airport through Gyeyang to Seoul, but the canal and mountain are better on a relaxed day. If you are planning around a connection, start with our Incheon layover plan.
How do you get to Gyeyang from Seoul?
AREX to Gyeyang Station, then Incheon Line 1 or a short taxi ride. AREX all-stop trains run from Seoul Station through Hongik Univ. and Gimpo Airport to Gyeyang; the express trains to Incheon Airport do not stop there. At Gyeyang you change to Incheon Line 1, which runs south through the district’s residential core to Bupyeong.
🚇 Seoul to Gyeyang by public transport (AREX and Incheon Line 1 route data, K-water; Oct 2026)
| Leg | Line | Approx. time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seoul Station or Hongik Univ. → Gyeyang Station | AREX all-stop train | About 25–35 min | 27 km from Seoul Station; express trains do not stop |
| Gimpo Airport → Gyeyang Station | AREX | About 5–7 min | One stop, 6.6 km |
| Gyeyang → Imhak / Gyesan | Incheon Line 1 towards Songdo | 3 / 4 stops, about 10 min | For the market and the Gyeyangsan trailheads |
| Southern Seoul → Gyesan | Line 7 to Bupyeong-gu Office, then Incheon Line 1 north | Varies | Useful from the Gangnam side |
| Gyeyang Station → Suhyangwon (Ara Waterway) | On foot | About 22 min | Exit 1, K-water’s directions |
| Gyeyang Station → Aramaru observatory | Taxi | Short ride | No convenient rail stop; K-water lists a 45-min walk from Geomam Station Exit 3 |
Changing lines at Gyeyang takes longer than it looks. Kyeongin Ilbo reported in July 2026 that transfers between AREX and Incheon Line 1 go down to transfer gates on B1 and back up, and the gates bottleneck at rush hour. The station handled about 12.4 million AREX trips in the first half of 2026 (Segye Ilbo), so avoid 07:30–08:30 on weekdays.
What is Gyeyang known for?
A mountain, a very old name, and archery. Gyeyangsan dominates the district; the name is said to come from the osmanthus (gyesu) and boxwood (hoeyang) trees that once grew on it. Below it, the walls of 계양산성 Gyeyangsanseong mark a fortress that controlled the lower Han River from the Three Kingdoms period onward. Gyeyang-gu itself is young: it was created in 1995, when Incheon’s old Buk-gu was divided into Bupyeong-gu and Gyeyang-gu.
Gyeyang in six dates
- 1215 — the area takes the name Gyeyang Dohobu under Goryeo's King Gojong.
- 1413 — now called Bupyeong, it becomes a 도호부 dohobu, a regional seat, with its office in Gyesan-dong completed around 1418.
- 1995 — Gyeyang-gu is created from Incheon's old Buk-gu.
- 2012 — the Gyeongin Ara Waterway opens along the district's northern edge.
- 2020 — Gyeyang Fortress becomes Historic Site No. 556 (May 22).
- 2026 — on July 1, neighbouring Seo-gu is split into Seohae-gu and Geomdan-gu; Gyeyang-gu itself is unchanged.
Archery is the modern identity. The district’s archery team was founded in 1996, and the Gyeyang Asiad Archery Field hosts the Gyeyang Open, a World Archery-sanctioned international event; the May 2026 edition drew more than 400 athletes from 22 countries, Segye Ilbo reported, with the finals moved to the canal-side garden at Suhyangwon.
What should you see in Gyeyang?
Gyeyangsan — The Korea Tourism Organization describes it as a half-day hike that beginners can manage, with nine courses lasting from about 50 minutes to just over two hours. A common route starts at Yeonmujeong, climbs past the octagonal pavilion to the summit and comes down the south ridge. The main ridge has little shade, so spring and autumn are easier than midsummer. A barrier-free path links Imhak Park with the fortress for wheelchair users and older walkers. The summit is a New Year sunrise spot: Kyeonggi Ilbo noted in February 2026 that the Incheon Tourism Organization put it on its holiday travel course, with the sun rising behind Gwanaksan. Gyesan Station on Incheon Line 1 is close to the trailheads, and parking at Gyeyang Park is free.
Gyeyang Fortress and Gyeyangsanseong Museum — The stone fortress sits on a peak running east from the main summit. It has a circumference of 1,184 m; more than 80% of the wall has gone, and the tallest surviving section is about 7 m. Excavations since the late 1990s have turned up arrowheads, iron cauldrons, Unified Silla pottery and wooden tablets from the Baekje period, one of them inscribed with lines from the Analects of Confucius. The museum at the trailhead (Gyeyangsan-ro 101) presents itself as Korea’s first museum devoted to fortresses, with fortress history on two floors and a viewing deck on the third. According to Kyeonggi Ilbo (July 2025), adults aged 19–64 pay 1,000 won and children, teens and seniors enter free.
About 1 km away, on the grounds of Bupyeong Elementary School, stands the Bupyeong Dohobu government office — one surviving building of an office complex completed around 1418, moved within the site in 1968. You can only look at it from outside, when the school gate is open, but it explains why “Bupyeong” history lives in Gyeyang.
Aramaru observatory and Ara Falls — The Gyeongin Ara Waterway, Korea’s first man-made canal, runs 18 km from the Han River to the Yellow Sea. Where it slices through the flank of Gyeyangsan, K-water built a 150 m wide artificial waterfall down the gorge wall and, beside it, Aramaru, a circular deck with a glass floor looking straight down at the canal. Stairs connect it to the waterside path. Come at dusk, when the deck is lit.
Gyeyang Araon and Suhyangwon — “Gyeyang Araon” is the district’s name for its section of the canal. Its centrepiece is Suhyangwon, a Korean-style garden with the Suhyangru pavilion, 22 minutes on foot from Gyeyang Station. Kyeongin Ilbo reported in March 2025 that a light street at nearby Hwangeo Plaza, with a large fish sculpture and illuminated flowers and deer, runs 18:00–23:00 in winter and 19:00–23:00 in summer; the city picked Gyeyang Araon as one of its “Incheon 9 Scenic Spots”. Summer water events and an autumn flower show are held here. The canal-side bike path continues west to Jeongseojin in Seohae-gu and east towards the Han River.
Gyeyang Kkotmaru and the Asiad Archery Field — On open land at Gyeyang Stadium (Bongodae-ro 855), the district plants large flower fields. Korea Tourism Organization data lists canola in May and June and cosmos in September and October, with free entry and free parking. The Asiad Archery Field and Gyeyang Gymnasium are in the same sports complex in Seoun-dong; check the volleyball fixture list if you want to combine flowers with a match.

Where do locals eat in Gyeyang?
Gyeyang eats like the residential district it is: duck and goat houses on the mountain’s edge, soup shops near the stations, and pubs that fill after work around Jakjeon. All of these had visitor posts or listings in 2026; prices are quoted from those posts.
Hayarobi (at the foot of Gyeyangsan) — One of four Incheon restaurants certified as 백년가게 Baeknyeon Gage (the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ “century shop” programme) in a July 2026 roundup by Hot Siksin. It occupies a converted house with a garden: duck is marinated in wine and garlic, part-grilled over oak charcoal, then finished at the table and wrapped in vegetables from the restaurant’s own plot. The same post listed duck barbecue at 70,000 won, a herbal duck soup set at 73,000 won and boiled goat at 38,000 won per person, with daily hours of 10:00–22:00. It suits a group after a hike.
Yennal Dwaeji Gukbap (Gyesan-dong) — “Old-style pork soup” is exactly what it serves: rice in milky pork broth, with boiled pork on the side. A September 2026 review paid 10,000 won for gukbap and 25,000 won for a small plate of suyuk. It opens 10:30–23:00 (last order 22:00) and closes on Mondays, so it works for a late lunch after Gyeyangsan.
Gyeyangsan Traditional Market (Byeongbang-dong) — Opened in 1989 as Byeongbang Market and renamed in 2017, it has about 150 shops under a roof arcade, a seven-minute walk from Imhak Station Exit 4, according to Korea Tourism Organization data. Because the Gyeyangsan loop trail starts nearby, hikers stop here for twisted doughnuts (kkwabaegi), kalguksu, buckwheat naengmyeon and gamjatang. Hours run roughly 09:00–20:30, varying by shop.
Ttungttanji Naeng Makgeolli, Jakjeon main branch (Jakjeon-dong) — An after-work pub on Hyoseo-ro serving ice-cold makgeolli and big sharing plates. A September 2026 post listed stir-fried pork with aged Jeju kimchi at 20,000 won, seafood pajeon at 13,000 won and makgeolli at 5,000 won. Open Monday to Saturday from 16:00 to midnight, closed Sundays. Go on a weekday evening to see how Gyeyang’s commuters unwind.

What does a half-day in Gyeyang look like?
- Morning — AREX to Gyeyang, then Incheon Line 1 to Gyesan Station. Avoid the 07:30–08:30 weekday crush.
- 09:00 — Gyeyangsanseong Museum when it opens (not on Mondays), then up the fortress path.
- Late morning — the summit. Look east for Gimpo Airport's runways and Seoul, west for Yeongjongdo. Come down by the south ridge or towards Imhak.
- Lunch — gukbap in Gyesan-dong or a market lunch at Gyeyangsan Traditional Market.
- Afternoon — the canal. Taxi to Aramaru for the falls and glass deck, then walk or cycle the path towards Suhyangwon.
- Evening — lights at Gyeyang Araon, or makgeolli in Jakjeon, then AREX back to Seoul or one stop to Gimpo Airport.
Practical tip
- Mondays: the fortress museum is closed and Yennal Dwaeji Gukbap is off; the mountain and the canal are open.
- Weather: K-water closes Aramaru, the falls and stretches of the bike path in heavy rain — it did so twice in July 2026. Check the Ara Waterway notice board before a rainy-season trip.
- Seasons: spring and autumn for the exposed ridge, May–June canola and September–October cosmos at Kkotmaru, and New Year's Day for the summit sunrise.
- Old maps: Gyeyang-gu did not change on July 1, 2026, but the district to its west did. Older maps and signs saying "Seo-gu" now mean Seohae-gu (south of the canal) or Geomdan-gu (north of it).
