Search for Jeju activities and you’ll find a lot of articles lumping everything together as “book this, book that.” In reality, the line is sharp: some things are mandatory by rule or operation (the Hallasan trails, the submarines), while others you can simply show up for (the ticket booths at national and provincial parks like Seongsan Ilchulbong).

Can you really do Jeju with just buses and taxis?

You can — but not by winging it. The trick is to base yourself in Jeju City or Seogwipo, where bus routes run dense, and tackle one area per day.

Jeju city buses have a ₩1,200 base fare by card, with up to two free transfers within 40 minutes of tapping off. Express buses can run as high as ₩3,000 depending on the route. The airport limousine buses into town (routes 600 and 800) charge by distance, in the ₩1,300–5,500 band. For volcanic cones (oreum) and stretches of coast where no bus reaches, you’ll fill the gap with a taxi — and note that as of July 1, 2026, the standard-taxi base fare (2 km) rose ₩200 to ₩4,300, with the late-night surcharge base fare (after 11 p.m.) at ₩4,920.

Which activities don’t need a reservation?

Seongsan Ilchulbong is the textbook example. It’s split into a paid section and a free section, and you simply buy your ticket at the on-site booth during opening hours. Online advance booking isn’t required.

Ticketing hours change with the season. In winter (November–February) the booth runs 06:00–17:00; in spring and fall (March–April, September–October) 05:00–18:00; and in summer (May–August) 04:30–19:00. Arrive before the booth opens to catch the sunrise and, since no one is selling tickets yet, even the paid section is open to enter.

If you’d rather bundle several sights into one day, a join-in bus tour is the way. The route is pre-planned for you, so you can cover the west and east outskirts — where buses run thin — in a single day.

Which activities are must-book?

Three stand out: the Hallasan Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa trails, the Seogwipo and Udo submarines, and most yacht tours. None of the three can be done on a whim at the gate.

The Hallasan trails run on a quota system. On the Hallasan trail reservation system (visithalla.jeju.go.kr), bookings for the following month open all at once at 9 a.m. on the 1st of each month. Each person can book up to 4 people and at most once per week (based on the hiking date), and the reservation itself is free. For inquiries, call 064-713-9953 (Seongpanak office).

Both submarines — Seogwipo Submarine (064-732-6060) and Udo Submarine (1899-4644) — require advance phone booking, plus arrival 20 minutes before boarding, an ID, and a boarding declaration form. The marine provincial park fee is paid separately in cash on-site.

What’s the total budget once Seoul–Jeju airfare is included?

On flight comparison sites, Seoul–Jeju round-trip airfare runs from the low ₩80,000s up to an average ₩150,000–250,000 depending on the season — and peak periods (summer holidays, long weekends) can push higher still.

Add it all up for a 3-night, 4-day trip: airfare (₩150,000–250,000) + accommodation (which swings hard by area and grade) + bus and taxi fares (₩15,000–20,000 a day) + one or two activities, and the per-person total usually lands in the ₩400,000–700,000 range. Add a rental car and you’re paying its rental, fuel, and insurance on top.
