The short answer

  • Tourists can book private checkups. Without Korean insurance eligibility, expect to pay the centre’s quoted international rate.
  • Compare official hospital prices, package contents and exclusions. A larger package does not by itself mean a better medical outcome.
  • Allow time for results and follow-up. Sedated endoscopy requires an escort; a biopsy or polyp removal can affect your return-flight plan.
  • Insured residents should first check NHIS screening eligibility and choose a designated provider.

A tourist paying for a package and an insured resident using national screening are taking different routes. The useful starting point is your insurance status, age, symptoms and medical history. Discuss which tests are appropriate with a clinician; no package guarantees that disease will be found or prevented.

Why do visitors consider a Korean checkup?

Centres combine several appointments in one place and publish package information. That convenience is distinct from medical benefit. The Health Ministry recorded about 65,000 foreign screening-centre patients in 2025, representing 3.1% of its department-level count.

How much do official hospital packages cost?

Use the hospital’s own price table and ask for a fresh quote. The examples below come from official pages or 2026 brochures. Samsung, SNUH and Severance prices were rechecked on 2026-10-16; Asan’s brochure figures were last read on 2026-10-08 and could not be reopened in this check.

International rates and medical value

  • Severance says its international rate applies to foreign nationals without Korean health-insurance eligibility. Ask whether your NHIS status changes the quote.
  • SNUH displays US-dollar prices; the payment currency and conversion method were not confirmed. KMI’s ₩900,000 listing is official, but the full pricing basis remains unclear.
  • Extra CT, MRI, tumour-marker and genetic tests are not automatically appropriate for every asymptomatic person. Discuss benefits, limitations, false positives and radiation where relevant with the clinician.

How do booking, preparation and results work?

Book early enough to receive preparation instructions and allow follow-up time. Do not copy another hospital’s fasting or medication instructions: they depend on the tests and your health.

Sedated endoscopy and flights

  • Severance and Samsung require an escort and no driving on the day of sedated endoscopy. Confirm what counts as an acceptable guardian before arriving alone.
  • Severance advises avoiding flights for 1 week after polyp removal. KMI’s preparation guidance says no flying for 2 weeks after biopsy or polyp removal. These are institution-specific instructions, not a universal clearance rule.
  • Tell the centre your flight date before the procedure, and ask the treating clinician when it is safe for you to fly. Procedure charges may be separate.

Request reports and image copies when booking or on the examination day. Translation is not necessarily ready within the standard medical-result window. Arrange follow-up for abnormal findings before leaving Korea, or plan how your doctor at home will receive the records.

Do you need a medical visa?

Check your entry permission with immigration or the Korean embassy. Medical Korea lists C-3-3 for short-term medical visits of up to 90 days and G-1-10 for longer treatment, up to 1 year. An appointment does not itself establish visa eligibility.

Entry-purpose check

  • An explicit official rule allowing every visa-free or K-ETA visitor to attend a checkup was not found. Ask immigration on 1345 or your embassy about your own nationality and purpose.
  • Request the hospital’s reservation confirmation and the embassy’s current document list if applying for a medical visa.

How do payment, insurance and VAT work?

Expect a self-pay package unless your insurer confirms cover. Samsung accepts Korean cash and cards, including overseas cards, and asks you to bring the physical card. Other centres’ payment methods and currency rules need confirmation.

VAT and insurance

  • Ordinary medical checkup services generally fall within VAT-exempt medical services under Article 35 of the VAT Act Enforcement Decree. They are not the same as taxable cosmetic procedures or a shopping tax-refund purchase.
  • Preventive screening may be excluded from travel insurance. Ask your insurer for written confirmation; direct billing for medical treatment does not mean a self-pay checkup package is covered.

Can insured foreign residents use national screening?

Yes, if they meet the programme’s eligibility rules. NHIS eligibility, age and screening category matter. NHIS lists employee-insured people, self-employed heads of household, and insured members or dependants aged 20+ as general-screening groups. Confirm that you are a target this year.

National screening: general eligibility and cancer programme outline

ScreeningTarget groupFrequencyUsual patient share
GeneralEligible employee insured; self-employed heads of household; insured members/dependants aged 20+Every 2 years; non-office employees annuallyFully covered by NHIS
Stomach cancerAge 40+Every 2 years10% for the upper premium half; eligible subsidised groups pay none
Colorectal cancerAge 50+; stool test firstAnnuallyNo share for the covered screening
Liver cancerHigh-risk people aged 40+Every 6 months10% for the upper premium half; eligible subsidised groups pay none
Breast cancerWomen aged 40+Every 2 years10% for the upper premium half; eligible subsidised groups pay none
Cervical cancerWomen aged 20+Every 2 yearsNo share for the covered screening
Lung cancerHigh-risk smokers aged 54–74Every 2 years10% for the upper premium half; eligible subsidised groups pay none

Confirm your own entitlement

  • Use the NHIS eligibility notice, official account or customer service. Do not decide solely from nationality, enrolment or an even/odd birth-year shortcut.
  • Book an NHIS-designated provider. Samsung’s private screening centre and Severance Health Check-up say they do not provide NHIS screening.
  • Ask separately about sedation and optional tests; no verified national sedation add-on price was found. NHIS: 1577-1000; foreign-language service: 033-811-2000.

How can you avoid unclear fees and brokers?

Use registered providers and request an itemised written quote. Compare the hospital’s own public package with the offer, and clarify sedation, contrast, biopsy, polyp removal, translation and follow-up fees.
