For a first-time visitor to Korea, the culture shock that hits soonest — and most often — is not the food or the greetings. It is the entryway. Open the door and the floor dips down a hand’s width, shoes lined up neatly inside. The moment you step over that ledge, walking in with shoes on is no longer an option. Your host does not have to say a word. The floor level says it for them.

Why go to such lengths? The answer is right under your feet. In Korea, the floor is not just a surface to walk on — it is a heating appliance. Touch a room floor in winter and it is faintly warm. People sit on it, lie on it, eat on it, sleep on it. So you simply cannot walk on it in shoes.

The short answer

  • Korean heating warms the floor, not the air. It is called ondol. Its traces appear in Neolithic sites, and in 2018 it was designated National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 135.
  • Today's apartment floor heating is not a firebox but hot-water ondol: a boiler heats water that circulates through pipes under the floor. The principle changed, but living on top of a warm floor did not.
  • On the boiler controller in your accommodation, you only need five words: room temperature · ondol · hot water only · schedule · away. Day to day, just leave it on 22–24°C.

So What Exactly Is Ondol?

It is a heating system that lights a fire in the agungi and sends the hot smoke beneath the floor of the room. In Sino-Korean it is called ondol (溫突, “warm tunnel”); the native Korean word is gudeul, most likely from the words for “baked stone.”

A Western fireplace or a Japanese irori keeps the fire inside the room and radiates its heat directly. Ondol is the exact opposite. The fire stays outside the room; only the smoke crawls beneath the floor. The stones heat up, and the stones release their warmth slowly. That is why the room is still warm in the morning after the fire dies — and the mark of a well-built gudeul is not raw power but how long the warmth lingers after the fire is out.

Over the gudeuljang they spread clay, then finished with thick, oiled paper (yuji jangpan). That glossy flooring you see in Korean homes today traces straight back to this.

A-raetmok and witmok — a pecking order in one room

The side near the firebox is a-raetmok, the far side is witmok. Same room, different temperatures. So the warm side naturally became the seat of elders and guests. In the Joseon era, this temperature difference doubled as the seating hierarchy.

Even today, when Koreans enter a restaurant room they instinctively seat the oldest person in the warmest spot. The floor heating long ago switched to boilers and the temperature gap is gone — but the seating order remains.


How Long Have People Lived Like This?

It goes back a long way. Neolithic dwellings in the northern Korean Peninsula — including the Seopohang and Gulpo-ri sites at Unggi (today’s Sonbong) in North Hamgyong Province — already show traces that can be read as gudeul. The murals of the 4th-century Goguryeo tomb Anak Tomb No. 3 even depict ondol. But it did not heat a whole room at first. Jjok-gudeul, which warmed only part of the room, came first; tong-gudeul, which heated the whole room, only appeared in the late Goryeo period. Even then it was a luxury, installed mostly in rooms for the sick and the elderly.

The knockout blow was climate. The 16th and 17th centuries were the Little Ice Age, exceptionally cold around the globe, and through that stretch ondol descended to commoners’ thatched houses until, by the late Joseon era, it was the de facto national standard. It came at a price. Ondol devours wood. From the late Joseon period into the 1950s and 60s, demand for firewood played a big part in stripping the peninsula’s mountains bare — and the dense forests ringing Seoul today are the result of massive replanting since the 1970s.


How Do Modern Apartments Get Warm Floors?

No more firebox. A boiler heats water that circulates through pipes laid in the floor. This is called hot-water ondol. The turning point came in the 1960s. The gudeuljang structure stayed, but firewood was swapped for yeontan (coal briquettes) — and briquettes emit carbon monoxide when they burn incompletely. The gas seeped through cracks in the gudeul into rooms, killing people in their sleep, and the hot-water boiler system developed in 1962 was created to solve exactly that problem.

As late as 1980, eight in ten Korean homes were still burning a fire in a firebox. Within a single generation, nearly all of them switched to boilers. Today, to see a real agungi in Seoul you have to go to a hanok village or a museum.

The Korea Heritage Service put it precisely when designating ondol culture a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Ondol is talhwa-jwasik (脫靴坐式) floor heating — literally, heating you use with your shoes off, sitting down. It is not just the technology but the way of life that was inscribed. That is why the designation has no individual holder and no holding group. It is something the entire nation still does every day.

Your Accommodation's Boiler: Which Button to Press

That white controller on the wall of your Korean accommodation — you only need five words. The wording varies a little by manufacturer (Kyungdong Navien, Kiturami, Rinnai, and so on), but the idea is the same.

Boiler tips — the only rules you need

  • Don't turn it on and off. Reheating the whole floor costs more energy. Keeping it on low continuously is cheaper and warmer.
  • Hot water doesn't come out instantly. Most Korean apartments use on-demand heating, so after you open the tap, cold water runs for about 30 seconds to a minute before it turns hot. That is not a fault.
  • A warm floor and cool air is normal. Ondol heats from underfoot, not the air above. If you come from a country of radiators, it feels strange at first.
  • If the floor won't warm in room-temperature mode, the controller's sensor has already reached the set temperature. Switch to ondol mode if you want floor warmth.
  • If you leave the accommodation for more than two days in winter, don't turn it off completely — press away (oechul). Frozen pipes are a host's worst nightmare.

Curious about winter heating costs? Short stays include them in the room rate, so there is nothing to worry about. If you pay utilities directly, as with a month-long stay, the winter utility bill for an 84 m² (84 sq m) apartment in Seoul averages around ₩280,000 a month including heating. In years with long cold snaps, there were reports of bills in the ₩600,000–700,000 range for 30-pyeong homes.

Heating rates in 2025–2026

  • In July 2025, Seoul adjusted city-gas retail supply costs, raising the usage charge by about 4.2% to ₩0.0663 per MJ (₩2.83 per cubic metre). The base charge was frozen.
  • As of August 2026, wholesale rates for residential and general use are frozen, with only non-residential categories such as industrial use up around 10%. The average wholesale rate in August 2026 is ₩21.8861 per MJ.
  • In other words, a traveler in 2026 will not feel much of a rise in home heating costs. That said, forecasts keep warning that a sustained high exchange rate could add upward pressure in winter.

Where Exactly Do You Take Your Shoes Off?

If it is a space where people sit or lie on the floor, take them off. That single sentence covers nearly every case. When in doubt, look for two things — a ledge where the floor level changes, and the shoes of the people who got there before you.

About socks — more important than you'd think

Many people consider it poor manners to walk into someone's home barefoot. It is not quite a taboo, but bringing socks even in summer is the safe move. Planning to visit a hanok or a floor-seated restaurant in sandals? Tuck a pair of socks in your bag.

On the flip side, holey socks are a famously awkward moment in Korea — a country where you take your shoes off several times a day. If a floor-seated restaurant is on the itinerary, give your socks a once-over in the morning.

One more thing — many homes keep bathroom-only slippers by the toilet. You don't wear those out of the bathroom.


A Way of Life Built on a Warm Floor

Ondol did not stop at being a heating technology. House layouts, the height of furniture, how people sit, even conflicts between neighbors — all of it branched out from that one floor.

It is the same reason many Korean guesthouses and hanok stays still hand you a yo and bedding instead of a bed. It looks inconvenient at first, but with a warm floor it is far warmer — because no mattress is blocking the heat.


What Happens in Summer?

It gets turned off. Flip the boiler controller to hot-water-only and the heating stops while the shower still runs hot. If you arrive at a summer accommodation and the controller is already in that state, that is normal.

The traditional hanok solved this in its architecture, placing a winter ondol room and a summer daecheong maru (wooden floor hall) side by side under one roof. The maru sits off the ground so air passes beneath it, and wood stays cool. That is why sitting on the maru of a hanok in summer is genuinely refreshing.

Modern apartments have no daecheong maru, so the air conditioner takes its place. And here a Korean cooling quirk shows up — most homes have a single standing unit in the living room, rarely one per room. Unlike winter heating, which rises evenly from the floor through every room, summer cooling concentrates in the living room. When choosing a summer stay, it is worth checking whether each room has its own AC.

Places to see a real gudeul structure, firebox, and chimney in Seoul are closer than you’d think. Both are free.

Namsangol Hanok Village — a firebox and chimney in the middle of downtown

Five Joseon-era hanok scattered across Seoul were moved to the northern slope of Namsan and restored here (opened 1998). Step into each house’s kitchen and the agungi is right there; look under the courtyard wall and you will find the chimney. The best part is tracing the whole route — firebox → floor → chimney — with your eyes in one go.

National Folk Museum of Korea — Ochon-daek, a real house rebuilt

A museum inside Gyeongbokgung. The permanent galleries cover Korean domestic life, but if you are here for ondol, the open-air exhibition area is more fun — especially Ochon-daek, the house of the Nam family from Yeongdeok, North Gyeongsang Province, donated to the museum and rebuilt exactly as it was in the museum yard. Since real people lived in it, the kitchen, agungi, jangdokdae (crock stand), and maru are all intact.

Korean Folk Village — where the fire is actually lit

An open-air folk village in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. Go in winter and you can watch a real fire being lit in the agungi. It is about the only place in the capital region where you can watch the smoke rise from the chimney. At 1–1.5 hours by public transport from Seoul, allow at least half a day.

Ondol Is Heading Out Into the World

Underfloor heating itself is not Korean alone. Ancient Rome’s hypocaust and China’s dikang came from a similar idea. But as a residential system used by an entire nation, continuously, for hundreds of years, Korea is essentially unique. The technical ancestor of modern hot-water floor heating is the panel heating patented in 1907 by Britain’s Arthur Henry Barker. In the United States, a well-known story has Frank Lloyd Wright, after experiencing an ondol room in Japan, introducing radiant floor heating to American homes in the 1930s.

Lately the flow has reversed. In November 2025, the Korea Heat Management Construction Association was reported to have discussed exporting Korean dry-install ondol methods with officials from the Uzbek embassy in Korea. In Central Asia and other northern countries with long winters, it is being introduced as K-ondol.

In the end, the Korean entryway ledge is an answer to the climate. On a peninsula with long, dry, bitingly cold winters, people chose to heat the floor under their feet rather than the air. And that one choice went on to decide how they sit, how high their furniture stands, how they sleep, and even how they enter someone's home. Taking your shoes off is not etiquette — it is the result of the structure.

So the next time you slip your shoes off at the door of a Korean stay, remember it is no mere custom. Beneath you runs a lineage of stone and smoke and fire stretching back to the Neolithic. It is now hot water through plastic pipes, but the feeling underfoot is the same as it was two thousand years ago.
