The short answer

  • Danggeun connects nearby buyers and sellers; neighborhood verification is part of trading.
  • Prepare your own Korean number and phone identity verification. SMS reception and identity verification are separate checks.
  • Inspect first, agree on payment in chat, and distinguish a transfer from 안심결제 protected payment.

A desk for your rented room is an easy purchase until you discover it will not fit in the lift. That is where Danggeun makes sense: it connects you with someone nearby, and the conversation covers both the object and how to collect it. For a student or a resident staying several months, the useful skill is learning that small local negotiation. This guide focuses on completing it safely, rather than promising that every foreign phone, bank account or language setting will work.

What is Danggeun, and why does the neighborhood matter?

Danggeun (당근), formerly Danggeun Market and associated internationally with Karrot, is a local community app with secondhand trading at its core. Its Korean service also has neighborhood information and other services, so a store order or a job advertisement is not the same transaction as buying a used chair from a neighbor. Start in the secondhand section and read the listing type before treating it as a private sale.

The company describes neighborhood verification and its manner-rating system as trust features. Verification uses your location to establish the neighborhood where you trade; it is not a promise that every seller lives at the address they give you, owns the goods or will refund you. Allow location access while verifying, use your actual neighborhood and follow the app if it asks you to verify again. Do not plan around a fixed radius or renewal period: these were not confirmed for every account. A high manner temperature can help you assess past activity, but it cannot replace inspection.

Check the three gates separately

Your number receives SMS; your identity passes the carrier check; your current location passes neighborhood verification. Passing one gate does not establish the other two. Keep the number active until your sales and account changes are finished.

Can a foreign resident sign up with a Korean number?

Prepare a Korean mobile number registered to you and check that the carrier supports the phone identity-verification flow offered in the app. The current official account policy says service use involves phone identity verification and that a number in another person’s name cannot be used. Older tutorials that describe an SMS code as the whole signup process are therefore insufficient. Email registration helps with account recovery; it does not replace having an available phone number.

Foreign nationality should not be confused with having the required verification credentials. A resident whose carrier records match their registered identity is in a different position from a visitor with a data-only eSIM. If verification fails, compare the name, date of birth, foreign-national selection and carrier choice with the carrier’s records. Ask the carrier and in-app support about the exact error. We could not confirm a universal passport-only route or a promise that every prepaid plan works. Do not borrow an account or pay someone to verify for you. Our identity-verification guide explains the wider system; the service’s current screen controls this particular signup.

Can you use it in English?

The Korean iOS listing names Korean, English, Japanese, Spanish and French. That is app-level metadata, not proof that every Korean-market feature, help article or seller message has an English version. Nor does an overseas Karrot guide establish the Korean service’s rules. Use the language options your installation actually shows, but plan to read Korean descriptions and arrange pickup in simple Korean. Translate a message before sending it and keep model numbers, measurements, money and times unchanged.

Ask one concrete question at a time. A seller can answer a short message about a scratch or collection time more reliably than a long translated explanation of your move. Do not send passport pictures, residence-card numbers or verification codes to prove you are a serious buyer. Identity verification belongs inside the official app flow. The phrases below are written for ordinary polite chat; replace the time or place with the details you have agreed.

Useful messages for a local transaction

Korean messageMeaning / when to use it
아직 판매 중인가요?Is this still available?
하자가 있나요?Are there any defects?
가로, 세로, 높이가 어떻게 되나요?What are the width, depth and height?
오늘 오후 6시에 가능할까요?Would 18:00 today work?
직거래 가능할까요?Could we meet for the exchange?
현금으로 드려도 될까요?May I pay cash?
물건 확인 후 송금할게요.I will transfer after inspecting the item.
제가 직접 가지러 갈게요.I will collect it myself.

How do buying and payment actually work?

Open the listing, compare the photographs and description, and read the seller’s history before making an offer. Ask about the exact model, missing accessories, defects and whether you can test the item. For furniture, write down width, depth and height, and ask who carries it downstairs. A low price can become an expensive purchase once a van, disassembly or disposal is involved. Keep the agreed price, item and meeting arrangement in the app’s chat.

Cash and an agreed bank transfer are practical ways to settle a face-to-face private sale, provided both parties accept them. With cash, prepare the agreed amount. With a transfer, the seller should verify the incoming payment in their own account rather than relying on your screenshot. The official Danggeun Pay guide separately names Danggeun Money transfers, account transfers, 안심결제 and 바로구매. Availability and enrollment checks are separate from having a trading account; do not assume that an overseas card or account will qualify.

These are different payment flows

MethodWhat to check
CashAgreed amount and an attended exchange
Bank transfer / 계좌송금Recipient and actual receipt; not automatically protected
Danggeun Money transfer / 당근머니 송금Correct chat recipient; completed transfers cannot simply be canceled
안심결제Official in-app protected-payment order, terms and receipt confirmation
바로구매Eligible purchase-and-delivery listing; unavailable for giveaways

Which scams should you watch for?

A transfer is not automatically escrow. In the protected-payment flow, follow the in-app order and its conditions, including any fees and compensation exclusions shown before paying. The company’s guide warns that a completed money transfer cannot simply be canceled. For 안심결제, inspect the goods before pressing 구매확정, the receipt-confirmation button. 바로구매 adds a purchase-and-delivery flow to eligible listings; it is not available for giveaway listings. A seller-supplied web link with an official-looking logo is not a substitute for opening the function inside your own app.

The National Police Agency advises checking reported phone or account details, preferring a face-to-face exchange where practical, and avoiding unknown links. A clean search result only means no matching report was found in that check; it is not a certificate of honesty. Save the listing and conversation while they are available. If something goes wrong, report the account in the app and use the police ECRM reporting system. Keep payment records and the receiving account details; do not send another payment to unlock a supposed refund.

A safe handoff has an agreed sequence

Confirm the object and meeting point → inspect and test → settle through the agreed method → confirm receipt when appropriate. If a third person collects or pays, pause and make sure every party understands the same transaction.

What does a free giveaway include?

나눔 means the owner is giving the listed object away. It can be useful when furnishing a room, but the person may choose a recipient based on pickup arrangements rather than the order messages arrive. Be specific about when you can collect it and how you will transport it. Do not ask the giver to hold a large object indefinitely or assume it has been professionally cleaned or checked. Inspect it with the same care you would use for a purchase.

문고리 거래 means an agreed doorstep handoff, sometimes without meeting. It is convenient for a low-value object but removes the chance to ask questions or inspect together. Agree precisely which item is yours and collect only that item. For an unfamiliar seller, valuable electronics or anything you need to test, ask for an attended handoff instead. Share an exact home address only when necessary for an agreed collection, and keep building access codes out of public listings.

How does it compare with Bunjang and Joonggonara?

The comparison below uses only features visible in the operators’ own descriptions and help pages. It is not a ranking of safety, popularity or foreigner access. Both shipped and face-to-face options can depend on the listing and product. Platform names alone do not tell you which payment protection applies: the actual checkout method does.

For a chair or drying rack you can collect nearby, start with a local search. For a specific collectible or size, a wider catalog may be more useful, but shipping and return arrangements need extra attention. None of these services should be treated as an English-language guarantee. For browsing clothes in person, our vintage-shopping guide solves a different problem; buying a used car needs the registration and insurance checks in our separate car guide.

How should you sell things before moving out?

List bulky items while you still have time to agree on collection, and leave yourself a fallback before the lease ends. Photograph each object in daylight, show defects clearly and state dimensions, included parts, collection location at neighborhood level, and whether the buyer must disassemble or carry it. Give an honest pickup window. Mark a reservation only after an agreement and update the listing when collection is complete so other people do not travel unnecessarily.

Separate things you own from furniture supplied by the landlord. Check the lease or ask the owner before offering anything that came with the room. For each large object, work out the route through doors, stairs and the lift before confirming collection. A ladder truck or moving service is a separate arrangement with its own access conditions; a secondhand listing does not book one. If an object cannot be sold or safely reused, follow your district’s waste rules rather than leaving it on the pavement with a “free” note. Build your move around the pickup deadline, not the hoped-for sale price.
