Buying character goods in Seoul has quietly changed over the past few years. There used to be character flagships on Gangnam-daero, on Garosu-gil, in Itaewon. Not anymore. The brands have wound down their big stores and compressed everything into two shopping districts — Hongdae and Myeongdong — which means if you don’t check the map first, you can easily walk to a building that no longer exists.

This guide only lists stores that are actually open as of September 2, 2026. Prices are the same-day selling prices I checked on each brand’s official online store.

The short answer

  • To knock out all three brands in one neighborhood, go to Hongdae. The Kakao Friends flagship (162 Yanghwa-ro) and K-pop Square Hongdae (141 Yanghwa-ro) face each other three minutes apart on foot.
  • The Kakao Friends Gangnam flagship closed on January 19, 2025. The Line Friends Sinsa and Seongsu stores are gone too. Follow an old blog post and you'll be standing in front of an empty building.
  • Budget for a keyring at 10,000–20,000 won and a medium plush at 30,000–70,000 won. To stay under 10,000 won, head to Daiso Myeongdong Station's 4th floor or Artbox.

What kind of character shopping are you after?

Where you should go depends entirely on what you’re after. There are four rough lanes.

🐻
National character flagships
Kakao Friends — Ryan and Chun-sik. These are the characters Koreans actually use on KakaoTalk, so they're about as close to "the definitive Korean gift" as it gets.
💜
K-pop-linked IP
Line Friends, BT21, TRUZ. This is where you go for a gift for an idol fan. Only two stores in the city — Hongdae and Myeongdong.
🎀
Japanese IP & subculture
Sanrio, Crayon Shin-chan, Animate. Clustered in the AK& Hongdae building and the backstreets around it, from official goods to secondhand finds.
🧺
Cheap bulk buying
Artbox and Daiso, in the 1,000–5,000 won range. This is the right answer for little gifts for ten coworkers.

Kakao Friends — Hongdae is now the only flagship left in Seoul

Straight answer: to see Kakao Friends properly, go to the Hongdae flagship store (162 Yanghwa-ro, Mapo-gu). It spans all of floors 1 to 3 and is open 10:30 to 22:00, every day of the year.

The Gangnam flagship that vanished in 2025

The Kakao Friends Gangnam flagship at 429 Gangnam-daero, Seocho-gu closed on January 19, 2025. It opened in July 2016, and for eight and a half years the three-floor, roughly 210-pyeong space was a photo landmark along Gangnam-daero. Kakao called it "an end for more efficient retail operations" and reorganized around the Hongdae store. The Myeongdong Lotte Young Plaza branch, Yongsan Station branch, and Yeouido IFC branch had already shut down.

Line Friends and BT21 — just two stores: Myeongdong and Hongdae

Straight answer: to buy BT21, go to K-pop Square Hongdae or Line Friends Square Myeongdong. There is no other option in Seoul.

BT21 is the IP that BTS members helped sketch themselves, and the rights belong to Line Friends (IPX). So a Line Friends store is, in effect, a BT21 store. HYBE INSIGHT at the Yongsan HYBE headquarters ended operations on January 15, 2023 and was converted into studios — there is no permanent merch shop at the HYBE building now.

The two stores have different personalities

  • K-pop Square Hongdae — specializes in K-pop artist IP, with BT21, TRUZ, and NCT-related goods plus photo zones and photo booths. It's registered with the Korea Tourism Organization as an immediate tax-refund store.
  • Line Friends Square Myeongdong — a character select shop that opened in April 2024. Alongside Line Friends' own IP, other brands like Joguman, Minini, and Jelly Bubble and rotating K-pop pop-ups come and go.

What do the prices actually look like?

Straight answer: keyrings in the 10,000-won range, pouches at 10,000–20,000 won, and medium plushies at 30,000–70,000 won. Below are the selling prices I checked on each brand’s official online store on September 2, 2026. In-store prices match.

2,500won
Cheapest official Kakao Friends item — figure 3-color ballpoint pen
13,000won

Tumbler16,000–18,000 won19,000–49,000 won
Cushion · body pillow32,900–45,000 wonNot carried

On price alone, Kakao Friends has the lower barrier to entry — it starts with a 2,500-won pen. Line Friends, by contrast, reaches far higher: the BT21 hologram tumbler runs 49,000 won and the CASETiFY collab phone case 83,000 won.

A sense of gift budgets: 20,000 won per person gets you a plush keyring or a pouch, 50,000 won gets a medium plush, and under 10,000 won you're looking at a sticker pack, pen, and deco-sticker combo. If you're buying for a whole group, the budget stores below are far more efficient.

On a tight budget — Artbox and Daiso

Straight answer: the 4th floor of Daiso Myeongdong Station is the character floor. The building is a single 12-story structure with a different category on each floor, and the 4th floor is characters, kids’ goods, and party supplies. There’s a floor-by-floor guidebook for foreigners on the 1st floor.

Artbox has 57 branches in Seoul alone and carries the widest range of Sanrio, Disney, and Korean character licensed goods. What’s most useful to travelers is its hours.

🕙 Key Artbox branches that stay open late

Most Daiso character goods run 1,000–5,000 won. One caveat: licensed stock comes in and sells out fast, so the shelves can look completely different if you come back two days later. If you spot something you like, buy it that day.

Sanrio and Japanese anime goods — one building, AK& Hongdae

Straight answer: the AK& Hongdae building at 188 Yanghwa-ro, Mapo-gu is the center of Seoul’s subculture goods scene. The entire 5th floor is Animate Hongdae, the 3rd floor is the figure specialist MegaHouse, and the 1st floor is Artbox. One building solves official goods, figures, and fancy goods all at once.

The alleys around it are lined with more goods shops, each with a slightly different flavor.

For a dedicated Sanrio space, there’s the Sanrio Lovers Club Hongdae (18 Wausan-ro 19-gil, Mapo-gu). The 1st floor is a walk-in MD shop, while the 2nd floor is a cafe and photo zone that requires a Catch Table advance reservation.

Check before you go

Sanrio Lovers Club runs on a seasonal system, so the entire exhibition can change or the venue can close for a break. Always check their Instagram account before heading over. Korea has no permanent Sanrio directly-operated store — most Sanrio goods are licensed and sold through Artbox, Daiso, and stationery shops.

Where do the new homegrown Korean characters live?

Straight answer: there are almost no permanent stores — it’s pop-ups, so timing is everything. Characters like Bellygom, Janmang Loopy, Choigosim, and Esther Bunny are hugely popular in Korea, but their offline presence shifts around.

For all four characters, your best odds of running into them are at Artbox and the 5th-floor pop-up zone at The Hyundai Seoul. If you’re set on a specific character, check that brand’s Instagram for the current pop-up location before you commit to the trip.

Can you get a tax refund?

Straight answer: it varies by store. K-pop Square Hongdae is confirmed as an immediate-refund store.

The common conditions are:

Line Friends Square Myeongdong and the Kakao Friends Hongdae flagship aren’t marked as tax-refund stores on the Korea Tourism Organization page. Given Myeongdong’s tourist-heavy character, it’s likely they support it — but your safest bet is to ask before you pay. Large Artbox and Daiso branches sometimes have self-service refund kiosks.

Route: you can see it all in half a day

Doing everything in Hongdae is the most efficient. Everything sits within a 500m radius of Hongik Univ. Station Exit 9.

If your itinerary is on the Myeongdong side, three stops are plenty: Line Friends Square Myeongdong (43 Myeongdong-gil), Artbox Myeongdong Central, and Daiso Myeongdong Station’s 4th floor. Myeongdong has plenty of stores open past 22:00, so it slots neatly into an evening.
