How do you get the tax refund? — instant refund is the default
Korea’s tax refund is a system where short-term foreign visitors get the VAT back on purchases of 15,000 won or more at designated stores. The part that matters at department stores is “instant refund.”
Instant refund limits — doubled since January 2024
The instant-refund limit — paying the VAT-excluded amount right at the register — is 1 million won per single payment and 5 million won cumulative during your stay. The Ministry of Economy and Finance doubled the old limits (500,000 won per purchase, 2.5 million won cumulative) in January 2024, and also lowered the minimum for refunds from 30,000 won to 15,000 won. Those standards still hold in 2026.

- ① Head to the membership/coupon desk first — if you sign up after shopping, that day's purchases often can't be applied retroactively. Bring your physical passport.
- ② Show your passport at every checkout — just saying "tax refund" works. Under 1 million won, you'll usually pay the VAT-excluded amount on the spot.
- ③ Keep slips for payments without instant refund — payments over 1 million won and some brands give you a refund slip. Process it at the floor tax-refund desk or a kiosk, or bring it to the airport refund counter.
- ④ Leave with items unopened — items refunded at the airport may be checked by customs, so finish the refund before checking your bags.
- ⑤ Check the duty-free conditions — the tax refund applies only if you leave the country within 3 months of purchase. Long-term residents may not qualify.
Which department store should you go to?
It depends on your goal, but by routing alone Myeongdong is close to the right answer. The Lotte and Shinsegae flagships are a 10-minute walk apart, so you can collect both stores’ foreigner benefits in a single half-day — and they tie into Myeongdong’s road shops, money changers, and duty-free stores. The Hyundai Seoul, by contrast, is in Yeouido, so its route splits off from Myeongdong; save it for a day when you have Han River or Yeouido plans.
