There’s a common misconception about Yeouido — that it’s an island where everyone works late into the night. The data suggests almost the opposite.
The short answer
- Yeouido has the earliest commutes of any Seoul business district, yet its 5 p.m. departure rate is also No. 1 nationwide. That's the finance sector's clock, synced to the 9 a.m. market open.
- Which is why its nightlife doesn't spread wide — it condenses into a few 24-hour spots. Two clusters do nearly all the work: the KBS main building and the Yeouido-dong 44 alley.
- The real high season is the 100 days from September 1 to December 2. The Assembly session and the budget deadline are fixed by the Constitution and law, so Yeouido's nights run on a date-locked calendar.
- After midnight, there's exactly one night bus: N16. Which is also the reason Yeouido has 24-hour gukbap joints.
What time does Yeouido actually start and finish work?
A telecom company analyzed commute patterns across 11 major business districts nationwide in 2022. The results defy the usual image.
The reason is simple: the stock market opens at 9 and closes at 3:30 p.m. On an island packed with finance, everyone’s body clock runs early.
So Yeouido’s nights aren’t a scene of everyone pulling all-nighters. They split sharply between the many who clock in at dawn and leave at five, and the few who stay behind for Assembly sessions, deadlines, and deals. Because it’s a minority, the nightlife can’t sprawl wide — it condenses into a handful of 24-hour spots.
Yeouido's high season is written into the law
No other commercial district has this feature. The peak of Yeouido’s night scene is date-locked by the Constitution and the National Assembly Act.

Early September opening → October state audit → November budget review → December 2 statutory budget deadline. These 100 days are when Yeouido actually comes alive at night, and the small hours of late November–early December in West Yeouido, right before the budget deadline, are the year’s absolute peak.
By contrast, Yeouido nights in the January–February and July–August recess are dead quiet. If you’re planning a Yeouido night out, check the Assembly calendar before the season — it’s a better guide than the weather.
Three things Yeouido does
- Politics — the National Assembly Building (completed September 1, 1975; 300 seats), the Members' Office Building, the National Assembly Library, and each party's headquarters. West Yeouido.
- Finance — the Korea Exchange, the Financial Supervisory Service, brokerage headquarters, IFC, Parc.1, TP Tower. East Yeouido.
- Broadcasting — the KBS main, new, and annex buildings. Right outside National Assembly Station exit 4.
One correction — MBC is not in Yeouido. It fully relocated to its new Sangam-dong headquarters in August 2014; the old building was sold in 2018 and demolished in 2019. Guides still circulating that say "Yeouido MBC" are describing a place that no longer exists.
There’s one more surprising late-night crowd. KBS’s new building hosts audiences for music and comedy shows, and K-pop fans who come for pre-recordings sometimes spend the small hours in Yeouido. You can see the traces in the reviews of the 24-hour ramyeon shop.
Where to eat at night — by area
① KBS main building (West Yeouido) — the heart of Yeouido’s small hours
Within a 50 m radius of 38 Uisadang-daero, the 24-hour spots cluster tightly. This is where broadcast staff, Assembly aides, and studio audiences mix.
② The Yeouido-dong 44 area — effectively the only second-round alley
The alley behind Yeouido Department Store. It’s where the bars huddle in a single block.

Gaehwajip is the latest-running spot in Yeouido — 4 a.m. on weekdays. When there are still people there at that hour, it’s usually a day with Assembly business on the calendar.

Yeouido by day — the old-guard spots where brokers and lawmakers eat
To talk about the night, you need to know the day. Location decides the clientele. A 500 m radius around National Assembly Station exit 1 is Assembly-and-media territory; the Yeouido-dong 44 block is brokerage territory.

Jinjujip has been in the basement of Yeouido Department Store since 1974. A few more of these old-timers hide in the basements of Yeouido’s 1970s–80s commercial buildings. Byeolmi Bokkeumjeom is in the same building’s basement.
The Assembly's staff cafeterias are open to the public
The Assembly grounds house seven cafeterias serving thousands of meals — the 300 members, Secretariat staff, and the Library, budget office, and legislative research staff. The 2nd-floor cafeteria in the main Assembly building charges ₩4,200 for staff and ₩5,500 for visitors, and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The National Assembly Library's basement cafeteria is also open to visitors. It pairs nicely with an Assembly tour.
Getting home at night — Yeouido Transit Center
It sits above the median bus lane on Yeouidaero. Opened July 10, 2005, together with the median bus lanes on Gyeongin-ro and Mapo-ro. The platforms are numbered 1–4, not lettered.

Past midnight? You have exactly three options
- ① Night bus N16. The only owl bus serving Yeouido Transit Center. From Dobongsan Station 00:10–03:35, from Onsu-dong 00:20–03:45, every 20–30 minutes, 8 trips a night.
- N16 route: Dobongsan Station – Suyu Station – Sungshin Women's University Station – Hyehwa-dong – Seoul Station – Mapo Station – Yeouido Transit Center – Yeongdeungpo Station – Sindorim Station – Gaebong Station – Onsu Station. In other words, it only covers the Gangbuk downtown axis and the southwest axis. There's no Gangnam or Jamsil option.
- ② A taxi. The most reliable, but the late-night surcharge applies.
- ③ Hold out until first train at a 24-hour gukbap joint. Not a joke — this is literally why Yeouido has 24-hour restaurants.
Yeouido Station and the underground route — what to know on rainy days
Yeouido Station is a transfer between Lines 5 (1996) and 9 (2009), with a combined daily ridership of about 109,000 in 2024. It’s the only station not served by Lines 1–4 to pass 100,000. Its secondary name — “Shinhan Investment & Securities” — says everything about this island.
Two exits are closed for construction
Yeouido Station exits 2 and 4 are closed for the Sinansan Line construction. Exit 4 is replaced by exit 4-1, which heads toward The Hyundai Seoul and Parc.1. Exit 5 is the Korea Exchange and KBS annex side. Follow old signage looking for exits 2 and 4, and you'll go in circles.
Yeouido isn’t one island connected entirely underground. The underground route is a single block.

IFC Mall L2 ─ The Hyundai SeoulA 320 m moving walkway from Yeouido Station exit 3 connects straight into IFC Mall’s second floor, and the same passage continues to The Hyundai Seoul. There’s even a Yeouido-dong community center civil-affairs office along the corridor.
By contrast, West Yeouido — KBS and the Assembly — is entirely above ground on foot. National Assembly Station and Yeouido Station are not connected underground. If you’re heading toward the Assembly on a rainy day, an umbrella is non-negotiable.
Weekend Yeouido is a different island
Yeouido Station’s commercial population runs about 90% office workers to 10% residents (Yeongdeungpo-gu as a whole is 50:50). That’s why the real-estate industry classifies Yeouido as a “five-day-a-week trading area.”

In other words, weekend Yeouido is an island left with only the river park and the malls. Yeouido Hangang Park (8.4 km long) and The Hyundai Seoul · IFC Mall actually peak on weekends, drawing people in from Yeongdeungpo and Mapo. Meanwhile, the West Yeouido lanes effectively roll their shutters down.

Since September 2025, you can commute home by boat
Hangang Bus began regular service on September 18, 2025, linking eight docks: Magok – Mangwon – Yeouido – Apgujeong – Oksu – Seoul Forest – Ttukseom – Jamsil, with express service stopping only at Magok–Yeouido–Jamsil. The full route takes about 75 minutes, express about 54.
Fares are ₩3,000 one-way for adults, ₩1,800 for youth, ₩1,100 for children, with transfer discounts and the Climate Card accepted. Free shuttle buses connect the docks to subway stations. Check the official channel for exact schedules and last departures.

Two things are worth flagging.
First, the Sinansan Line is not opening in 2026. The target had been December 2026, but a string of construction incidents pushed it back, and it’s now slated for 2027 or later. It’s also why Yeouido Station exits 2 and 4 are closed.
Second, Yeouido Park becomes a construction zone from December 2026. The Second Sejong Center is going up on its north side. The site was originally in Mullae-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, and its 2023 relocation into Yeouido Park drew fairness controversy and an audit, but the project was ultimately cleared to proceed. You won’t be able to see today’s Yeouido Park for much longer.
A one-night itinerary — in late, out at dawn
- 17:00 Yeouido Station exit 3 → 320 m moving walkway → IFC Mall → The Hyundai Seoul. The only stretch where you stay dry in the rain.
- 18:30 Yeouido Hangang Park. The Rolljang running track or Mulbit Plaza. Apr–Oct, Fri–Sat, there are floating-stage performances.
- 20:00 63 Art Observatory (closes 22:00). Adults ₩13,000.
- 21:30 To the Yeouido-dong 44 alley. Gaehwajip, Hwanggeum Macha, or Disco Seoul.
- 24:00 Move to Myeongdong Kalguksu (until 03:00) or the 24-hour sundae-guk spot by the KBS main building.
- 02:00 Head home on night bus N16 (Yeouido Transit Center, until ~03:45), or hold out until Won Haejangguk opens at 06:00 and finish with buk-eo-guk, ₩7,000.
What I verified while writing this
Yeouido is a place where even "how many people work here" is hard to pin down. I couldn't find a reliable primary source for the absolute number of resident office workers, so it isn't in this article — instead I used ratio data like 90% office : 10% residential and the No. 3 ranking by business-district workforce. The commute data is flagged as a 2022 survey.
One thing, though, is certain. The Assembly session calendar is written into the Constitution and the National Assembly Act, so it doesn't change. If you want to see Yeouido at night, go between September and early December. Restaurant info uses registered business data, and anything I couldn't verify is marked in the text.
