To introduce this neighborhood, I have to start with a restaurant that’s no longer here.
There was a place called Seodaemun Wonjo Tong Suljip tucked into an alley beside Seodaemun Police Station in Migeun-dong. A couple who’d moved up from Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do opened it in November 1961 — they sawed a steel drum in half to make tables and grilled pork ribs over it. In 2021, the year it turned 60, the Seoul Metropolitan Government named it a Seoul Future Heritage site. Two months later, on January 3, 2022, Covid finished what 60 years couldn’t. The last lunch service came and went, and the doors never opened again.
A nopo (노포 — old restaurants that have held their ground for decades) means “old store” in Korean, but the truth is, it’s a list that shrinks by a handful of names every year. The ten below are the ones still standing as of July 2026.
The short answer
- The nopo cluster in two pockets: ① Migeundong Ttaengttaeng-geori (Seodaemun Station Exits 7 & 8) ② Jungnim-dong Cheongpa-ro (south of Chungjeongno Station). They're a 10-minute walk apart — easy to string together in one day.
- Prices are office-lunch prices, not tourist prices. Seolleongtang ₩9,000 · sundae jeongsik ₩9,000 · hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap ₩8,000 — the Seoul average bibimbap was ₩11,769 in May 2026 (Korea Consumer Agency).
- ⚠️ Nearly half the spots close on weekends. It's an office district — Saturday and Sunday closures are the default. Aim for a weekday lunch (before 11:30am or after 1pm).
What kind of neighborhood are Chungjeongno and Migeundong?
In one line: it’s the spot where the tourist trail in central Seoul runs out of road. Travelers make it as far as Gwanghwamun, City Hall, Deoksugung, and Jeongdong. Push one block further west and the crowd flips completely.
The name Migeun-dong (渼芹洞) gives it away. During the Joseon era, this was a marshy patch along a stream — named for a deep well that never ran dry and the water-dropwort fields that grew around it. Today, the National Police Agency headquarters (97 Tongil-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Migeun-dong 209) stands on that exact spot. Across the street in Chungjeongno 1-ga, you’ll find Nonghyup’s headquarters and the Munhwa Ilbo building. Just north of Seodaemun Station in Pyeong-dong sits Kangbuk Samsung Hospital. This isn’t a tourist district — it’s a lunch district for civil servants, corporate HQs, and hospital staff.
The road name Chungjeongno (忠正路) was assigned in 1946. It comes from Chungjeong (忠正), the posthumous title of Min Yeong-hwan (1861–1905), a Joseon official who took his own life in protest of the Eulsa Treaty. After liberation, Seoul City swept away the Japanese-era neighborhood names and gave this one his title instead. It still marks the subway station and administrative district to this day.
Ttaengttaeng-geori — the station is gone, only the eateries remain
During the Japanese colonial period, the Gyeongui Line's Seosomun Station sat right here in Migeun-dong. The station was decommissioned and torn down, but the alley in front of it — and the restaurants — stayed put. Today locals call it Ttaengttaeng-geori (땡땡거리, the "ding-ding street"), named after the alarm that sounds when the crossing gates drop. Seoul city data puts daily train traffic at roughly 500 — the highest of any railroad crossing in the country. KTX, ITX, Mugunghwa, electric commuter trains, and freight trains all barrel past at close range. Inside the alley, you'll find Midong Elementary School (over a century old) and Seosomun Apartment, both still standing. Three nopo from this article — Hyeongjeok, Cheolgil Tteokbokki, and Daerimjeong — sit right along this alley.
Before you go — weekend closures

- Break times are long at many of these places (Hyeongjeok 3pm–6pm, Hosujip 2pm–5pm, Samo Jjukkumi 2pm–5pm). Between 3pm and 5pm, the whole neighborhood essentially goes quiet.
- Noon to 1pm is office-worker lunch rush. To skip the queue, come before 11:30am or after 1pm.
Where do locals keep going back to, decade after decade?
The selection criteria are threefold: ① open for at least 20 years in the same spot ② within walking distance of Chungjeongno or Seodaemun Station ③ most customers are neighborhood office workers. I prioritized places that consistently rank high on Korean review platforms (Dining Code, Siksin) and have appeared in Seoul Future Heritage designations or media coverage.

Migeundong Ttaengttaeng-geori — eateries along the tracks
Come out of Seodaemun Station Exit 7 and head toward Chungjeongno 6-gil — in about three minutes you’ll hit the crossing. This is where Ttaengttaeng-geori starts. The alley is short, maybe 20 minutes end to end, but tucked inside are restaurants that opened in 1957 and 1973, still going.
1. Hyeongjeok — three generations of seolleongtang since 1957 (69 years and counting)
The oldest spot on this list. Opened in 1957, now run by the third generation. The menu is simple: seolleongtang, haejangguk, dogani-tang. As of May 2025 media reports: seolleongtang ₩9,000 · haejangguk ₩9,000 · dogani-tang ₩14,000.

2. Cheolgil Tteokbokki — the snack bar where KTX trains roll past your table
The most famous spot on Ttaengttaeng-geori, and the one I’d steer a traveler toward first. The reason isn’t really the food — it’s the seat. The shop is pressed right up against the crossing, so you sit there eating tteokbokki while KTX trains and freight cars slide past a few meters away.

They use wheat rice cakes, not the rice-based ones trending lately — the texture is different, and the sauce is the kind of thing you’d find outside a school gate in the 1980s or ’90s. Everything’s made fresh on the griddle. Closed Saturdays, so if you’re visiting on a weekend, aim for Sunday.

3. Bonga Seodaemun Jokbal — two minutes from Seodaemun Station Exit 7
The closest nopo to the station. Seodaemun Station Exit 7, a 2-minute walk, Migeun-dong 31-14. Jokbal ₩35,000, spicy seasoned jokbal around ₩37,000, and they give you unlimited sujebi on the side. They’re busy enough to run a separate annex building.

4. Samo Jjukkumi — jjukkumi jeongol at ₩8,000 per person
Tucked at the end of an alley near Seodaemun Station, and packed with office workers every lunchtime. Jjukkumi jeongol runs ₩8,000 per person. The spice level is aggressive even by Korean standards — if you’re not built for heat, keep that in mind. Closed Sat & Sun, break time 2pm–5pm.

5. Pyeongyangok — cauldron-brewed chicken gomtang since 1984
A chicken specialist that’s been at it in Migeun-dong since 1984. The signature is a native-breed chicken gomtang simmered in a cast-iron cauldron, with haesintang and dak-doritang on the menu as well. Open daily 10am–10pm — one of the rare spots in this neighborhood that opens on weekends.

Jungnim-dong Cheongpa-ro — the nopo belt south of Chungjeongno Station
From Chungjeongno Station, walk 6–8 minutes south along Cheongpa-ro toward Seoul Station and you’ll hit a stretch where restaurants from 1971, 1972, 1980, and 1986 sit within 400 meters of each other. The administrative district is Jungnim-dong in Jung-gu, but the neighborhood flows into Chungjeongno seamlessly. Looming over the alley is Yakhyeon Cathedral (est. 1892, Korea’s first Western-style brick church — six years older than Myeongdong Cathedral, designated a national historic site), which makes a solid pre- or post-meal detour.
6. Hwangseongjip — sundae jeongsik ₩9,000 (est. 1971, 55 years)
Opened in 1971. A single dish — sundae jeongsik at ₩9,000 — has kept this place alive for 55 years. Cheongpa-ro 447-15, roughly a 7-minute walk from Chungjeongno Station.

7. Jungnimjang Seolleongtang — seolleongtang, dogani-tang, kkori-tang, suyuk. That’s it. (1972)
Four items on the menu, nothing else. Seolleongtang, dogani-tang, kkori-tang, suyuk. Opened in 1972 (the Seoul Future Heritage registry lists it as 1974), and since 2006 the founder’s son has been running the show as the second generation. TV programs have introduced it as “48 years of tradition.”

8. Dakkal Wonjojip — dak-hanmari with freshly made chive dumplings (1980)
Opened in 1980 and passed down from mother-in-law to daughter-in-law. The format is the standard dak-hanmari — a whole chicken simmered at the table, finished with kalguksu noodles in the broth — but this house adds chive dumplings they roll and fold on the spot. Way fewer people than the Dongdaemun dak-hanmari alley.

9. Hosujip — charcoal-briquette chicken, 40 years of smoke (1986)
The best-known spot on this stretch. Since 1986 they’ve been grilling chicken over charcoal briquettes, and the twin pillars of the menu are dak-kkochi (chicken skewers) and dak-doritang (spicy braised chicken). By evening, the place tilts more toward drinking than dining. Closed Sundays, break time 2pm–5pm.

10. Jangho Wang Gopchang (main) — kimchi-jjigae ₩9,000 (Sunhwa-dong)
Tucked between Seodaemun Station and City Hall Station in Sunhwa-dong. Lunch is kimchi-jjigae at ₩9,000; evenings turn to gopchang, makchang, and daechang grilled over the fire. Listed as open year-round — one of the few weekend-safe options in the area.

Two spots office workers swarm to — founding years unconfirmed
I couldn’t verify that these two have hit the 20-year nopo threshold, but they come up every single time anyone talks about lunch in this neighborhood.
Daerimjeong’s hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap at ₩8,000 is the most striking number in this article. The Seoul average bibimbap was ₩11,769 in May 2026 (Korea Consumer Agency) — they’re piling raw hanwoo beef tartare on top and charging ₩3,769 less. A price that only exists because the entire customer base is office workers who’d mutiny otherwise.

How to fit it all into one day
I wouldn’t recommend coming to this neighborhood as a standalone destination. The natural move is to see Deoksugung and Jeongdong in the morning, then come here for lunch or dinner. Chungjeongno Station is one stop from City Hall on Line 2.

Chungjeong Apartment — see it now or you never will
Standing in Chungjeongno 3-ga, Chungjeong Apartment was completed in 1937 — the oldest surviving apartment building in Korea. It received the lowest safety grade (E), residents have been relocated, and demolition is confirmed under the redevelopment plan. Construction company bids fell through twice in 2025, and a new tender was announced in February 2026. As of July 2026, no demolition start has been reported — meaning it's likely still standing, but there are no guarantees. Check the latest before you go. This is a residential building; do not enter the premises or photograph residents. The nearby modern heritage building Chungjeonggak has been designated for preservation.
What should foreign travelers know before they go?
Practical checklist
- Don't expect English menus. This isn't a tourist district — most places only have Korean menus. Screenshot the names of the dishes you want in Korean before you go. It'll make ordering ten times easier.
- You might need cash. Older snack bars and small restaurants sometimes don't have card terminals, or have a minimum charge.
- For solo dining, stick to soups. Seolleongtang, chueotang, and sundae jeongsik are natural one-person orders. Jokbal, dak-doritang, and gopchang are built for two or more.
- Stay behind the safety line when filming near the tracks. This is an active mainline railroad crossing with close to 500 trains a day. The trains are not props.
- Avoid photographing police buildings. The National Police Agency headquarters is the anchor building of Migeun-dong.
