The short version (July 2026)

  • Visa-free nationals can enter Korea without a K-ETA (temporary waiver extended through Dec 31, 2026). But the e-Arrival Card is mandatory.
  • Get a K-ETA (₩10,000, 3 years) and you skip the e-Arrival Card and the paper arrival card — worth it if you visit often.
  • Airport → Seoul Station: AREX Express 43 min · ₩13,000 / taxi ~₩65,000–₩100,000 / airport limousine bus.

Honestly, what you need to sort before landing at Incheon has gotten way simpler than it used to be. For the vast majority of travelers in 2026, it comes down to two things: ① K-ETA (optional) or e-Arrival Card (mandatory) — pick one, and ② whether you need to declare anything at customs. That’s it. Run through the decision tree below and you’ll have this figured out in three minutes flat.

What do I actually need to prepare in 2026?

Here’s the deal — just find your situation in the table below. Most tourists from visa-free countries have exactly one decision to make: get a K-ETA, or submit an e-Arrival Card. No need to overthink this.

Bottom line: if you get a K-ETA, you don’t need the e-Arrival Card. If you skip the K-ETA, you must submit the e-Arrival Card. That one sentence pretty much sums up Korea entry prep for 2026.

K-ETA — do I actually need one in 2026?

If you’re from a visa-free country, you can enter without a K-ETA through December 31, 2026. The Ministry of Justice extended the temporary waiver for another full year (Jan 1–Dec 31, 2026 KST). That covers the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan, most EU countries, and other major visa-free nations.

That said, “waiver” just means you can skip it — you’re still free to apply if you want to. Having a K-ETA gets you the perks below.

DetailInfo
Where to applyk-eta.go.kr (official) or the official app — watch out for third-party middleman sites
Fee₩10,000 (~US$7–8), non-refundable whether you’re approved or not
Validity3 years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first)
When to applyAt least 72 hours before departure recommended (usually processed within 24h)
PerksMultiple entries during the validity period + e-Arrival Card & paper arrival card waived

Rule of thumb: If you’re visiting once a year or less, don’t bother paying — the free e-Arrival Card is all you need. But if you’ll be back two or more times within three years, or you just hate filling out online forms every trip, the K-ETA is the more convenient play.

e-Arrival Card — who needs it, when, and how?

As of January 1, 2026, the e-Arrival Card is mandatory for all arrivals — with three exceptions: valid K-ETA holders, registered foreign residents, and flight crew. It’s a free online form that replaces the old paper arrival card.

Paper cardOfficially phased out in favor of the digital version. If you show up without submitting, you can use a QR code, tablet kiosk, or paper form at the airport — but that’s a backup, not the intended process. Do it online beforehand.

Have your accommodation address ready. You just need the name, address, and phone number of your first place. Even if you’re hopping between multiple hotels, only the first one matters.

K-ETA vs e-Arrival Card — which one makes more sense?

These two aren’t a “do both” situation — it’s really a “pick one.” The K-ETA is the superior option in the sense that it overrides the card requirement.

Q-CODE (quarantine declaration) — do I need to do this?

For most travelers, no. Q-CODE is a quarantine (infectious disease) declaration system. It’s only mandatory if you’re arriving from — or have transited through — a designated quarantine management zone, or if you have symptoms like a fever. As of July 2026, the mandatory list covers 25 countries, mostly in the Middle East (13 countries: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen), plus select Asian countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Mongolia, parts of China), and parts of Africa (DR Congo, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda). The usual tourist origin points — US, Japan, Europe, Australia — are not on the list.

Customs — what’s my duty-free limit and what can’t I bring?

Your personal duty-free allowance is US$800 (purchases and gifts included). Alcohol, tobacco, and perfume have separate limits on top of that. Go over the limits and you’re looking at declaration and possible duties at the arrival hall.

Category2026 Duty-Free Limit
General goodsUS$800 total (overseas purchases + duty-free shop buys + gifts combined)
Alcohol2L total + under US$400 (must be 19+. The 2-bottle limit was scrapped in March 2025)
Tobacco200 cigarettes (1 carton)
PerfumeApprox. 60mL

Prohibited / restricted items (key ones):

“Duty-free” means you didn’t pay tax in the country where you bought it — it doesn’t mean it’s automatically tax-free when you enter Korea. Exceed the allowance and you will be taxed.

Cash & foreign currency — how much can I bring without declaring?

Up to US$10,000 equivalent — no declaration needed. That covers Korean won, foreign currency, and negotiable instruments combined. If you’re carrying more than US$10,000, you must declare it at customs upon arrival. Fail to do so and you risk penalties and seizure.

Arrival procedure — step-by-step at the airport

  1. Disembark → Quarantine (present Q-CODE if you’re on the mandatory list; otherwise walk through)
  2. Immigration — Passport + e-Arrival Card (unless you have a K-ETA). Fingerprints & facial scan
  3. Baggage Claim
  4. Customs — Nothing to declare? Green channel. Something to declare? Red channel.
  5. Arrivals hall → transport

Immigration lines can get long depending on the time of day and how many flights land at once. Check Incheon Airport’s congestion forecast ahead of time if you want to shave minutes off your arrival slog.

Airport to central Seoul — how much and how long?

💡 Common mistakes to avoid

  • Falling for overpriced K-ETA agency sites — only use k-eta.go.kr and e-arrivalcard.go.kr, the official government domains.
  • Getting a K-ETA and then submitting an e-Arrival Card anyway — if you have a K-ETA, the card is unnecessary.
  • Trying to submit the e-Arrival Card too early — the form only opens 72 hours before arrival.
  • Bringing jerky, instant ramen seasoning packs, or fruit — meat and agricultural items can be prohibited.
  • Exchanging large sums at the airport — the rates are terrible. Hit a money changer in the city.
