Seoul gets most of Korea’s visitors, and Busan most of the rest. Between them sit a handful of big cities that run their own affairs at the level of a province: the 광역시 gwangyeoksi, or metropolitan cities. Most are cities of a million or more people, each has its own food and its own history, and most are within two hours of Seoul by KTX. They are also where Koreans go when they visit family, watch baseball or eat the dish their hometown is proud of, which makes them good places to see ordinary Korean life away from the capital.
This page is the map for our series. It compares the five cities we cover in depth (Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Ulsan and Sejong) with the two that most visitors already know, Busan and Incheon, and says who each one suits. Note one change in 2026: on July 1, Gwangju merged with South Jeolla Province into Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, so the “metropolitan city” list in older guides is now out of date.
The short answer
- Closest: Daejeon (54 min on the fastest KTX) and Sejong next door; Incheon is on the Seoul subway.
- Best food trip: Daegu for makchang and jjimgalbi, Gwangju for Jeolla cooking, Daejeon for bread and kalguksu.
- Best history: Gwangju for the May 18 Democratic Uprising, Daegu for its modern-history alleys, Ulsan for the UNESCO-listed Bangucheon Petroglyphs.
- Easiest to skip: Sejong, unless you like gardens and modern city design; it is best as a day out from Daejeon.
Which Korean metropolitan city should you visit?
Pick by what you want from the trip: food in Daegu or Gwangju, an easy add-on in Daejeon and Sejong, coast and industry in Ulsan, and the sea and nightlife in Busan. The cards below sum up each city; the table compares them on travel time, food and how long to stay.

What is each city like?
Daegu is the big city of the southeast inland, hot in summer and proud of its food. Since taking in Gunwi County on July 1, 2023 it has the largest area of any metropolitan city, and its mountain, Palgongsan, became Korea’s 23rd national park at the end of that year. Most visitors stay in the old downtown, between the modern-history alleys around Cheongna Hill, Kim Kwang-seok Street and Seomun Market, whose night market ran Friday to Sunday in 2026. The city named its “Daegu 10 Flavors” in 2006; grilled makchang, garlicky Dongin-dong jjimgalbi and flat napjak mandu are the ones to start with. Read the full Daegu city guide.
Daejeon grew up around a railway station on the Seoul–Busan line in 1905 and became a science city after the 1993 Expo, which left behind Hanbit Tower. In April 2026 the city named bread, kalguksu and tofu duruchigi its official representative foods, and the bakery Sungsimdang is a pilgrimage in its own right. It has one subway line; the planned tram, Line 2, has been pushed back to the second half of 2030. Hanbit Tower and the National Science Museum’s main halls are free, and the Yuseong hot spring foot bath is free and open 07:00–22:00 every day. Read the full Daejeon city guide.
Gwangju is the largest city in the southwest and the center of Jeolla food. It is also where the May 18 Democratic Uprising took place in 1980; the old South Jeolla Provincial Office, the site of the last stand, formally reopened on May 18, 2026, beside the Asia Culture Center. The 16th Gwangju Biennale runs from September 5 to November 15, 2026. Do not confuse it with Gwangju in Gyeonggi-do, the small city next to Seoul with Namhansanseong fortress. What the city titles mean
- 특별시 special city — Seoul, the capital.
- 광역시 metropolitan city — a big city governed at province level: Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Daejeon and Ulsan.
- 특별자치시 special self-governing city — Sejong, created on July 1, 2012 to take government ministries out of Seoul.
- 통합특별시 integrated special city — new in 2026: Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, formed on July 1, 2026 from Gwangju and South Jeolla Province.
Ulsan is Korea’s industrial capital on the southeast coast, between Gyeongju and Busan. Its oldest story is carved in stone: the Bangucheon Petroglyphs, carvings of whales, hunters and boats, became Korea’s 17th UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2025, and the petroglyph museum is free. Taehwagang became Korea’s second national garden in 2019, and Jangsaengpo has been a whale culture zone since 2008. There is no subway, and KTX trains stop at Ulsan Station in the western hills, so plan on buses or taxis. Read the full Ulsan city guide.
Sejong is the newest and least touristy. It became a city on July 1, 2012, created so that government ministries could move out of Seoul, and most of it is less than fifteen years old. Its real draws are green: the Government Complex rooftop garden, which Guinness listed in 2016 as the world’s largest, and the National Sejong Arboretum. Read the full Sejong city guide.
Busan needs no introduction, and we already cover it in detail: what Busan’s locals queue for, which neighborhood to stay in and a two-day KTX trip budget. Incheon is where most visitors land, and it is close enough to Seoul to visit on the subway: see Incheon day trips, what to do on an Incheon Airport layover and how to get from the airport to Seoul. Our Incheon district series covers Jemulpo-gu for Chinatown and Wolmido, Yeongjong-gu on the airport island and Songdo in Yeonsu-gu.
How do you combine the cities on one trip?
Link them along the KTX lines rather than going back to Seoul each time. The high-speed network runs south from Seoul and splits: the Gyeongbu line toward Daejeon, Daegu, Ulsan and Busan, and the Honam line toward Gwangju. These pairings work well:
- Daejeon + Sejong (2 days): stay in Daejeon and take BRT B2 or B1 to Sejong for a day; B2 runs from Osong Station through Sejong to Daejeon's Banseok Station and on to Daejeon World Cup Stadium.
- Daegu + Gyeongju (3 days): two nights in Daegu, one day in Gyeongju; we compare the two in Gyeongju, Daegu or Yeosu.
- Ulsan + Gyeongju + Busan (4 days): Ulsan sits between the two, so go up the coast from Busan or down from Gyeongju; see where to stay in Busan for the last night.
- Gwangju + Jeonju (3 days): Jeonju is an easy KTX hop from Gwangju, so a Seoul – Jeonju – Gwangju loop works; see Jeonju Hanok Village.
Practical tips
One card for all of them: a T-money card works on the subways and buses in every city in this list, so you do not need a new card in each one.
Mondays: many public museums and attractions in these cities close on Mondays, including the Daejeon science museums, the Ulsan petroglyph museum and the Sejong arboretum.
Baseball: Daegu, Daejeon and Gwangju all have KBO teams, and a home game is one of the best evenings out; see our KBO game guide.
Trains: for booking (KTX and SRT have run as one network since September 2026), see KTX and SRT day trips from Seoul. For one-day trips built around a single station, see our KTX day trips to Daejeon, Dongdaegu and Ulsan. All stations are collected in our KTX day trips by station guide.
When is the best time to visit Korea's big cities?
Spring and autumn, when the festivals cluster; summer is hot inland, especially in Daegu. A few dates from this series:
- July: the Daegu Chimac Festival (July 1–5 in 2026) and the Jochiwon Peach Festival in Sejong (July 24–26 in 2026).
- September–November: the 16th Gwangju Biennale (September 5 – November 15, 2026).
- October: the Sejong Hangeul Festival (October 9–11 in 2026) and the Ulsan Whale Festival (October 15–18 in 2026).
For what else is on across the country, see Korea’s fall festivals for 2026.
