“So who’s the hottest actor in Korea right now?” Ask a Korean friend and you’ll get a different answer every time. One person thinks of drama buzz, another of box office numbers, someone else of the face they keep seeing in commercials. This piece is the companion to one of our most-read guides, the most popular K-pop groups of 2026. It puts brand reputation, FUNdex buzz, KOBIS admissions, Netflix’s global Top 10 and Gallup Korea on one table to map out who leads among Korean actors and actresses as of early October 2026.
The short answer
- The buzz leaders right now are Lee Jun-young and Song Kang of tvN's Four Hands, Two Sonatas: #1 and #2 in FUNdex's drama-cast buzz ranking for five straight weeks, late August to late September.
- This year's box office kings are Yoo Hai-jin and Park Ji-hoon of The King's Warden: 16.92 million admissions (KOBIS), #2 in Korean box office history.
- For actresses, it depends on the metric. Buzz: Gong Hyo-jin. Global streaming: Go Youn-jung. Theaters: Jun Ji-hyun (Colony, 5.95 million).
- For recognition across all ages (Gallup Korea 2025), the top TV actor is Park Bo-gum at 13.3% and the top film actor is Lee Byung-hun at 25.8%.
Who is the most popular Korean actor in 2026?
For buzz right this moment, it’s Song Kang and Lee Jun-young. For the whole year at the box office, it’s Yoo Hai-jin and Park Ji-hoon. You need both pairs to see the real picture of 2026.
Start with buzz. tvN’s weekend drama Four Hands, Two Sonatas, which premiered on August 29, follows two piano rivals at an arts high school from age 17 to 27. In Good Data Corporation’s official FUNdex rankings, lead Lee Jun-young sat at #1 in drama-cast buzz and Song Kang at #2 for five straight weeks, from the fourth week of August through the fourth week of September (September 21–27). In that last week, Lee Jun-young held a 12.18% share of drama-cast buzz and Song Kang 11.18%, nearly double the 6.35% of #3 Hyun Bin (Disney+‘s Made in Korea Season 2). The show came with a ready-made storyline, too: it’s Song Kang’s comeback after finishing his military service and Lee Jun-young’s last project before enlisting (per Wikitree). In the Korea Corporate Reputation Research Institute’s September actor brand reputation ranking (100 drama, film and OTT actors), Song Kang was again #1, with Seo Kang-joon (KBS2’s Neo Malgo Dareun Yeonae) at #2 (per Ilgan Today and GP Korea).
The box office tells a completely different story. The King’s Warden, director Jang Hang-jun’s historical drama released on February 4, drew 16,929,362 admissions per KOBIS, second only to The Admiral: Roaring Currents in Korean box office history. Park Ji-hoon plays Danjong (Yi Hong-wi), the exiled boy king, and Yoo Hai-jin plays Eom Heung-do, the village headman in the mountains of Yeongwol who protects him. Park Ji-hoon, a former member of the idol group Wanna One, climbed as high as #2 in June’s film actor brand reputation ranking on the back of this role (per Segye Ilbo), while Yoo Hai-jin is back in theaters with The Assassin(s), released September 23.

Who is the most popular Korean actress in 2026?
With actresses, the #1 spot splits the most from one metric to the next. The most consistently talked-about name right now is Gong Hyo-jin, the 2026 face best known to overseas viewers is Go Youn-jung, and the actress who has drawn the biggest crowds in theaters is Jun Ji-hyun.
In MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama Yubunyeo Killer, based on a webtoon, Gong Hyo-jin plays a woman who snipes violent criminals at work and is a working mom at home. The show ranked #2 in Gallup Korea’s September survey of favorite TV programs with 2.9%, and Gong Hyo-jin was #1 in the Korea Corporate Reputation Research Institute’s September drama actor brand reputation ranking (per Wikitree and Asia News Agency). She also appears in the film The Journey to Gyeongju, released in late August.
Go Youn-jung’s profile abroad jumped when her Netflix series Can This Love Be Translated? (co-starring Kim Seon-ho), released January 16, held #1 on Netflix’s global non-English TV chart for two straight weeks, January 19 to February 1. That run carried through to #1 in August’s actor brand reputation ranking (per bnt News) and #1 among female rookie ad models of 2026 in a survey of advertising professionals by the Busan International Advertising Festival (MAD STARS).
Female actors across the metrics (as of early October 2026)
| Actor | Key 2026 work | Strongest metric | By the numbers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gong Hyo-jin | Yubunyeo Killer (MBC), The Journey to Gyeongju | Buzz, viewer preference | #2 in Gallup’s September favorite programs (2.9%), #1 in September drama actor brand reputation |
| Go Youn-jung | Can This Love Be Translated? (Netflix) | Global streaming, advertising | #1 on Netflix non-English TV for two straight weeks, #1 in August actor brand reputation |
| Jun Ji-hyun | Colony | Box office | 5,953,042 admissions (KOBIS, #2 Korean film of the year) |
| Kim Hye-soo | — | Brand reputation | #1 in September film actor brand reputation |
| Son Ye-jin | The Scandal (Netflix) | Global streaming, buzz | Non-English TV #7 → #3 (third and fourth weeks of September), #4 in FUNdex for the fourth week of September |
| Kim Hye-yoon | Salmokji: Whispering Water | Box office | 3,241,491 admissions (KOBIS) |
| Shin Min-a | The Eyes | Box office | 1,541,511 admissions (KOBIS), #4 in September film actor brand reputation |
| Ahn Hee-yeon | Sarang-i Onda (KBS2) | Viewer preference | #1 in Gallup’s September favorite programs (4.9%) |
| IU | When Life Gives You Tangerines (2025) | National recognition, advertising | #2 on Gallup Korea’s 2025 TV Actor of the Year list, 11.3%; MAD STARS top ad model three years running |
Who starred in 2026’s biggest films and streaming hits?
In theaters, The King’s Warden is #1. On Netflix, the biggest global hit is Teach You a Lesson. Unlike buzz metrics, these numbers come from people actually buying tickets or pressing play, which makes them the “hardest” popularity data there is.
2026 Korean box office ranking and leads (KOBIS yearly box office, through October 2)
| # | Film | Release | Admissions | Leads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The King’s Warden | February 4 | 16,929,362 | Yoo Hai-jin, Park Ji-hoon |
| 2 | Colony | May 21 | 5,953,042 | Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook |
| 3 | Hope | July 15 | 4,587,347 | Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon |
| 4 | Salmokji: Whispering Water | April 8 | 3,241,491 | Kim Hye-yoon |
| 5 | Humint | February 11 | 1,982,506 | Zo In-sung, Park Jeong-min |
| 6 | The Assassin(s) | September 23 | 1,890,413 (still showing) | Yoo Hai-jin, Park Hae-il, Lee Min-ho |
| 7 | The Eyes | June 24 | 1,541,511 | Shin Min-a, Kim Nam-hee |
| 8 | Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub | September 23 | 1,125,973 (still showing) | Byun Yo-han, Noh Jae-won |
Notice that Zo In-sung and Yoo Hai-jin each have two films on the list. Korean audiences’ habit of backing actors they “trust to deliver” shows up right there in the numbers. At the same time, genre films led by actresses, like Colony, Salmokji: Whispering Water and The Eyes, also filled the upper ranks, so the box office isn’t nearly as male-skewed as the Gallup survey.
For streaming, the reference point is Tudum, Netflix’s official Top 10 site. Teach You a Lesson, starring Kim Mu-yeol and Jin Ki-joo and released June 5, racked up 67.2 million views in its first 91 days, landing at #10 on Netflix’s all-time non-English TV list. That puts it on the list as the next Korean title after Squid Game Seasons 1–3. So Ji-sub’s SBS drama Kim Bujang also reached #1 on Netflix’s weekly non-English TV chart in July, and The Scandal, starring Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook and Nana and released September 18, climbed from #7 in its first week to #3 the next.
Popularity through the lens of advertising
The ad industry cares less about buzz than about "a face you can trust for the long haul." When the Busan International Advertising Festival (MAD STARS) surveyed Korean advertising and marketing professionals from March to May 2026, the top ad models were IU (three years running) and Park Bo-gum (his first #1), and the top rookie ad models were Go Youn-jung and Park Ji-hoon (per Kookmin Ilbo and Financial News). There's no official count of how many ad deals each actor has, so we've left that out.
Why does each ranking have a different #1?
Because each metric differs in who it asks, when, and what it measures. Measure online mentions and the actors on air right now come out ahead. Measure admissions and it’s the actors with films in theaters. Ask people directly once a year and long-built name recognition wins.
How to read actor popularity metrics
| Metric | What it measures | Scope and frequency | Who it favors |
|---|---|---|---|
| FUNdex buzz (Good Data Corporation) | Reaction volume across news, blogs, communities, video and social media | Cast of TV and OTT dramas airing or upcoming, weekly (films excluded) | Leads of dramas airing right now (Lee Jun-young, Song Kang) |
| Brand reputation (Korea Corporate Reputation Research Institute) | Big data on participation, media, communication and community | Separate pools for film actors, drama actors and all actors, monthly | Actors with a new release or lots of news that month |
| KOBIS admissions (Korean Film Council) | Actual cinema tickets issued | Films only, cumulative | Leads of hit films (Yoo Hai-jin, Park Ji-hoon) |
| Netflix Top 10 (Tudum) | Global views | Netflix titles, weekly | Leads of global streaming hits (Go Youn-jung, Kim Mu-yeol) |
| Gallup Korea Actor of the Year | Asks directly “which actor stood out most” (open-ended, up to two names) | 1,700 people aged 13+, face-to-face interviews, every November | Actors known to every generation (Park Bo-gum, Lee Byung-hun) |
This table also solves the “six actresses sweep the top” puzzle. Brand reputation’s film actor ranking measures that month’s online mentions within a pool of actors who have film credits, so a drama airing or news of a new project can push someone up the chart even without a new movie. Sure enough, Gong Hyo-jin also topped the drama actor ranking that same September. Gallup’s Film Actor of the Year, by contrast, asks which “face of film” stuck in people’s minds over a whole year, which favors male actors with long track records.
Top buzz doesn't mean top viewership
When Gallup Korea asked 1,002 people aged 18 and over about their favorite programs on September 15–17, #1 was KBS2's weekend drama Sarang-i Onda (starring Ahn Hee-yeon and Ha Seok-jin, 4.9%), while Four Hands, Two Sonatas, #1 in buzz for five straight weeks, came in at #14 (1.2%). The viewers who react loudly online and the viewers who watch weekend dramas on TV week after week are simply different crowds. "The actor everyone online is talking about" and "the actor the whole family knows" are worth looking at separately.
Why is an actor’s popularity in Korea different from their popularity abroad?
Because most fans overseas meet Korean actors through global streaming services like Netflix. In Korea, plenty of actors become household names through network weekend dramas or theatrical films, but if those titles don’t rank on global streaming charts, international fans see far less of them.
Same show, different report card: in Korea vs. abroad (2026)
| Title | Leads | Performance in Korea | Performance abroad (Netflix global) |
|---|---|---|---|
| The King’s Warden | Yoo Hai-jin, Park Ji-hoon | 16.92 million admissions, #2 all time | Theatrical film, so no global streaming ranking applies |
| Sarang-i Onda (KBS2) | Ahn Hee-yeon, Ha Seok-jin | #1 in Gallup’s September favorites, 4.9% | Not found in September’s non-English TV Top 10 |
| Four Hands, Two Sonatas (tvN) | Lee Jun-young, Song Kang | FUNdex cast #1 and #2 for five straight weeks, #14 in Gallup’s September survey | Non-English TV #7 (Sept 7–13), #10 (Sept 14–20) |
| Kim Bujang (SBS) | So Ji-sub | Finale peaked at 27.1% (as reported) | Non-English TV weekly #1 (July 6–12) |
| Teach You a Lesson (Netflix) | Kim Mu-yeol, Jin Ki-joo | #1 in Gallup’s June favorites | #10 all-time non-English TV, 67.2 million views |
| Can This Love Be Translated? (Netflix) | Go Youn-jung, Kim Seon-ho | #1 in August actor brand reputation (Go Youn-jung) | Non-English TV #1 for two straight weeks |
| The Scandal (Netflix) | Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook, Nana | FUNdex #4–6 in the fourth week of September | Non-English TV #7 → #3 |
Two takeaways. First, starring in a Netflix original sends an actor’s international profile up almost overnight. Kim Mu-yeol has a long career behind him, but before Teach You a Lesson his wasn’t a familiar name to fans abroad. Second, a Korean “national drama” isn’t necessarily a global hit. Historical dramas that need Korean history for context, like the story of Danjong, and family weekend dramas feel far bigger at home than global charts suggest. Overseas fandoms also tend to be locked in by hits from a few years back, so it’s common for an actor who’s quiet in Korea’s monthly metrics to still be the biggest draw at fan events abroad. Then again, as Gallup itself pointed out, 2025’s TV Actor of the Year came from an OTT drama (When Life Gives You Tangerines) for the first time, a sign that popularity at home and abroad is increasingly being made on the same screen.
Where in Korea can you follow in your favorite actor’s footsteps?
The surest pilgrimage spot of 2026 is Cheongnyeongpo and Jangneung in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, the setting of The King’s Warden. Because the film is set in Cheongnyeongpo, the place where Danjong was exiled, visitor numbers have surged. According to a report citing Yeongwol County figures, Jangneung and Cheongnyeongpo drew 522,365 visitors from January to mid-April 2026, about double the 263,327 for all of 2025.
Travel tips for actor fans
- Cheongnyeongpo and Jangneung, Yeongwol — Cheongnyeongpo is a place of exile ringed by a river, reached only by boat, so you feel the isolation from the film firsthand. A day trip from Seoul is doable, but the journey is long, so leave early in the morning.
- Filming locations in Seoul — We've mapped drama locations by route in our guide to K-drama filming locations in Seoul, and movie locations in our guide to movie filming locations in Seoul.
- Watch a Korean film in a Korean cinema — Big hits sometimes get separate screenings with English subtitles. KOBIS even lists an English-subtitled version of The King's Warden. For tips on picking a theater, see our guide to movie theaters in Seoul.
Note — FUNdex updates weekly and brand reputation monthly, and both swing hard as shows air and films open. Figures in this article reflect data published through October 2, 2026. For the idol side of the picture, our companion piece on the most popular K-pop groups of 2026 uses the same approach.
