The short answer
- Korea’s OTT usage rate was 81.8% in the 2025 government survey; OTT includes more than paid drama apps.
- TVING, Coupang Play and Wavve help explain the local mix of variety, drama and sports alongside Netflix and Disney+.
- While traveling, check the actual title and subtitle options in your account before buying another subscription.
Someone at the next café table is discussing a dating show; the television in your accommodation is showing baseball; your Netflix home screen looks different from the one you left behind. All three can be part of the same Korean viewing evening. To understand it, separate the service carrying a program from the channel that made it, and separate either of those from the device used to watch it. The useful map is wider than a single league table of apps.
How many people in Korea use OTT?
The latest annual release we verified is the 2025 Broadcast Media Usage Behavior Survey, published on 2025-12-30 by the Broadcasting and Media Communications Commission, succeeding the KCC name used for earlier surveys. It reports OTT use at 81.8%, up from 79.2% in 2024 and 77.0% in 2023. The survey covered 8,320 people aged 13 and over in 5,566 households through face-to-face interviews. These are survey results with a defined population, not live counts of app installations.
The survey’s definition of online video includes free services and short-form viewing. Its overall OTT rate therefore does not mean that the same share of people pays for a streaming subscription. The detailed release labels the 65.5% paid-service figure with OTT users as the denominator. It also reports viewing through a TV set at 36.4% among OTT users. Neither should be presented as a percentage of all residents, and neither is a share of the market’s revenue.
Which streaming services matter beyond Netflix?
Netflix is a natural starting point for internationally distributed Korean series and films. TVING is useful for understanding the mix of Korean originals, television programs and sports; Wavve has its own Korean television and original-content offering; Coupang Play combines entertainment with a separately defined sports offer; Disney+ combines its international brands with Korean originals. YouTube sits across the whole landscape through clips, creators, official broadcaster channels and other free video.
Treat those descriptions as a search map rather than a guarantee that a specific title or match is included. Rights change by season, territory and plan. The current TVING and Disney+ pages also advertise bundles, so an existing membership can overlap with another offer. Check the actual program page, available episodes and subtitle menu before paying. The companion subscription-price guide keeps the cost discussion separate from this viewing guide.
A service map; always verify the specific title, rights and plan
| Service | What to look for | Access question |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Korean and international series, films, originals | Local catalog and subtitle availability |
| TVING | Korean shows, originals, live content and sports | Specific plan and competition |
| Coupang Play | Entertainment and sports offering | Base access versus Sports Pass |
| Wavve | Korean television programs and originals | Service activation and bundle terms |
| Disney+ | International brands and Korean originals | Territory, plan and any bundle |
| YouTube | Creators, official clips and broadcaster channels | Full episode versus clip; official upload |
What can an OTT ranking actually tell you?
A government survey answers who says they use a service; an app analytics panel estimates usage of particular apps over a defined period. Subscriber totals, monthly active users, viewing time and revenue are different measures. A person who opens several apps can count in several rows, and someone watching on a television can be missed by a phone-only panel. That is why adding platform usage percentages to make a 100% pie chart would be misleading.
For a comparable published baseline, KISDI’s June 2025 paper reproduces 2024 government-survey figures for the four selected services below. Among these services, Netflix leads the paid-streaming names, while YouTube is larger under the broader online-video definition. The table is deliberately labeled 2024; it is not a complete current ranking and excludes services for which that figure does not provide comparable rows. We did not establish a reproducible 2026 all-platform ranking from an original app-panel publication, so no private MAU estimate is promoted into the summary or FAQ.
Selected 2024 services, government survey reproduced by KISDI; all respondents, multiple answers
| Service | 2024 usage rate | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 72.7% | Includes free online video |
| Netflix | 36.0% | Service use, not subscriber market share |
| TVING | 14.8% | Service use, multiple answers allowed |
| Wavve | 6.9% | Service use, multiple answers allowed |
What do people watch: variety, drama or sports?
In the 2025 government release, entertainment/variety and drama lead the genres watched among viewers of terrestrial or paid-TV programs through OTT, followed by news. That denominator is narrower than all OTT viewers: it is not a ranking of every creator video, original film and sports stream. It is still a useful clue to why a Korean conversation about television often includes a weekly variety show as readily as a drama.
Variety is a broad label. It can mean dating reality, competition, travel, food, observation or a studio conversation, often with episodes designed for weekly discussion. Dramas are another route into current conversation, but a famous actor does not identify the distributor: search by the exact title and season. Some stories begin as webtoons, while a filming location becomes interesting after you have seen the scene. Those are the connections explored in our webtoon, actor and filming-location guides.
Start with the program, then the platform
Search the exact title and season, open its official page, and check subtitles and included episodes before comparing monthly fees.
How is Korean television organized?
Think of Korean TV in layers. Terrestrial broadcasters include KBS, MBC, SBS and EBS. Additional channels include general programming channels such as JTBC and specialist channels for news, sports, entertainment and other interests, including tvN. IPTV, cable and satellite services carry channel packages; they are delivery systems, not individual program genres. An OTT service may carry live channels, catch-up episodes or licensed programs from those channels without owning every program it carries.
For a traveler, the practical consequence is simple: the channel logo on a hotel television does not tell you which app has the catch-up rights or whether English subtitles are available. Channel numbers depend on the television provider, so use the on-screen program guide or ask the accommodation for its channel list. A familiar drama can also be a rerun. Check the episode and date before assuming everyone is watching the same new release that night.
Have TVING and Wavve merged?
There has been a real corporate-combination process, but it needs careful wording. In June 2025, the Fair Trade Commission announced its decision on a combination involving CJ ENM/TVING executives concurrently holding Wavve executive positions. It imposed remedies including maintenance of existing plans through the end of 2026 and safeguards for comparable choices if the services integrate. The decision is more specific than the casual headline “two apps merged.”
As checked on 2026-10-16, TVING’s official purchase page offers double-service plans, while Disney+ Korea advertises bundles and instructs users to activate TVING and/or Wavve memberships after subscribing. That is evidence of linked offers and distinct service activation. It is not evidence that one login, one library or every right has become universal. We could not confirm a completed single-app integration from a current official announcement; check the exact bundle terms instead of canceling an account on the strength of merger news.
A bundle is a billing arrangement
Read its activation instructions and existing-account conditions. Linked subscriptions do not establish one common catalog or transfer every sports right.
What changes when you open Netflix in Korea?
Netflix says you can use the service while traveling, including on mobile devices, computers and a television at your accommodation. It also says the selection of streaming and downloadable titles, audio and subtitles can change by country. My List or Continue Watching can therefore contain titles you cannot play in Korea. Country-specific maturity ratings can interact with parental controls, and a download made at home may not remain available abroad.
Changing the profile’s display language does not create subtitles that the local license does not include. Open the title’s audio and subtitle menu on the device you will use. If an ad-supported plan produces a region-availability error, follow Netflix’s official troubleshooting rather than assuming every plan works in every country. Korea’s library is not an assurance of more English subtitles or every Korean drama. Keep your home account’s payment arrangements current and follow travel-verification prompts; visiting Korea does not automatically change your billing country.
Which viewing setup makes sense for your stay?
For a short trip, test your existing account first and use official free clips when you only want a little context. For a semester or longer stay, identify the programs you will actually follow, then check access, language, device support and billing in that order. Domestic services can have Korean-language registration or verification requirements, and a subscription does not resolve those automatically. Ask support about your own account rather than buying a shared login from a stranger.
Sports needs an extra step: check the exact competition, date and required plan. TVING’s March 2026 announcement confirms its Futures League coverage, while Coupang’s official information describes a separate Sports Pass. Neither means every baseball or football match comes with every base membership. If you watch on a shared television, sign out when leaving. Use the price guide for fees and bundle arithmetic, the SNS guide for clips and social discussion, and the film-ranking guide when choosing a movie rather than another series.
