The short answer
- Gangnam Station to Myeongdong Station runs about 28 min by subway (1 transfer), and roughly 43–44 min to Hongdae Station
- Within the same Shilla Stay brand, the Gangnam COEX branch costs 39% more than the Hongdae branch
- Flip to L7 and the Gangnam branch (USD 174.39) comes in 34% below Myeongdong (USD 265.05)
Gangnam was never the center of Seoul’s sightseeing loop. From walkable districts like Gyeongbokgung, Myeongdong and Hongdae, you have to change trains at least once just to reach it. And yet its hotels book out year after year. So what’s the pull? We broke the question into three parts: the extra commute, the brand-for-brand price premium, and the three exceptions — COEX, medical tourism and business — where Gangnam genuinely earns its keep.
Rates are based on 20 properties captured in Klook’s affiliate feed, and every location and walking time below comes straight from each hotel’s official page or a booking platform.
How long does Gangnam really take to the top sights?
It’s not short. Gangnam Station to Myeongdong Station is about 28 minutes by subway — one transfer, for example changing at Sadang from Line 4 to Line 2, or at Seoul Nat’l Univ. of Education from Line 3 to Line 2 — and roughly 43–44 minutes to Hongdae Station. Gyeongbokgung is where the numbers get slippery: sources range from 33 minutes to 1 hour 11 minutes, so we’re not pinning it down here.
🏆 Travel times to key sights from Gangnam Station
| Destination | Travel time (subway) | Transfers |
|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong Station | about 28 min | 1 |
| Hongdae Station | about 43–44 min | 1 |
| Gyeongbokgung Station | 1 |
Background: Gangnam hugs the southern end of the subway map
Walkable sights like Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon and Myeongdong cluster in the north of Seoul's subway network, while Gangnam sits far south. If sightseeing is the priority, that structural distance is itself the drawback.
Same brand, Gangnam: how much more do you pay?
It’s not consistently more expensive. Take the two chains that show up in Myeongdong, Hongdae and Gangnam at the same time in this feed — Shilla Stay and L7 by Lotte — and the results split right down the middle.
Shilla Stay’s spread is wild even within Gangnam. Against the Hongdae branch (USD 137.90), the Gangnam Seocho branch (USD 139.55) barely differs, but the Gangnam Yeoksam branch (USD 157.25) runs 14% higher and the Samseong COEX branch (USD 192.15) is 39% up. L7 flips the script: its Gangnam branch (USD 174.39) is 11% cheaper than Hongdae (USD 195.29) and a full 34% below Myeongdong (USD 265.05).

Same-brand matchups possible in this feed
So “Gangnam is always more expensive” is only half true. Where business demand concentrates — around COEX and Samseong-dong — the premium is real. Around Gangnam Station and Seocho, though, rates can match other neighborhoods or even come in lower.
Practical tip: paying a premium rarely buys you sightseeing convenience
Spending more in Gangnam won't get you closer to the sights. You're already further from the walkable districts, so you'd be adding travel time on top of the price. For pure sightseeing, Myeongdong and Hongdae often win on both money and minutes.
Still worth staying in Gangnam: three cases
Attending a COEX convention, medical tourism, and business meetings in the Gangnam area. For these three, the time you save getting around outweighs the commuting hit.
COEX conventions. Hotels near Samseong and Bongeunsa Stations link to COEX Mall and the convention center on foot or underground. You can slip between your room and the venue without a daily round-trip commute.
Check rates for Oakwood Premier, connected underground to COEX Mall
About a 10-minute walk from Samseong Station, with an underground passage to COEX Mall — so you can move around regardless of the weather. Reference rate on Klook's feed: USD 315.6 a night.
Prices and availability as of August 2026; vary by date and option. If there's no convention on your calendar, there's no real reason to insist on this location.
Medical tourism. Sinsa and Apgujeong are dense with plastic surgery and dermatology clinics. The draw is a route where consultation, procedure and recovery sit a short taxi ride from each other.
Check rates for ANDAZ SEOUL GANGNAM, connected to Apgujeong Station
Linked directly to Apgujeong Station Exit 3, so you can walk to the Sinsa and Apgujeong clinic districts. At USD 567.69 a night on Klook's feed, it's the priciest option in this batch.
Prices and availability as of August 2026; vary by date and option. If sightseeing is all you're after, there's no reason to pay this kind of money.
Business meetings. Around Gangnam Station you can wrap a meeting and walk straight into the evening restaurant district. And for a quick one-night trip, there’s no need to book a pricey hotel.
Check rates for Toyoko Inn, 5 minutes' walk from Gangnam Station
About a 5–6 minute walk from Gangnam Station, and at USD 84.75 a night it's one of the cheapest of the 20 Gangnam properties in this feed. Suits a work trip that values location and price over breakfast and facilities.
Prices and availability as of August 2026; vary by date and option. If you want rock-bottom, the lowest rate in this feed is YaKorea Hostel Gangnam (USD 38.65) — compare both in the table below.
Within Gangnam, what changes from one neighborhood to the next?
Even within “Gangnam,” walkability swings wildly depending on whether you land near Gangnam Station, Yeoksam, Samseong or Seolleung. Plenty of hotels carry “Gangnam” in the name yet actually sit near Seolleung or Samseong Station, not Gangnam Station — so always check the nearest station before you book.
