For an AREX-free destination like Myeongdong, you have two choices. Ride the non-stop express (roughly 39–43 minutes to Seoul Station, ₩11,000 one way), transfer to Line 4, and ride about 3 more minutes to Myeongdong Station. Or take the all-stop train to Seoul Station and make the same transfer. Either way, you’re dragging a suitcase through at least one change of trains.

Where Does the Club-Street Noise Zone End and the Quiet Edge of Yeonnam and Sangsu Begin?
Administratively, Hongdae covers Yeonnam-dong, Donggyo-dong, Seogyo-dong, Hapjeong-dong, and Sangsu-dong. On Friday and weekend nights, the club street and the bars and hunting pocha (pickup bars) around Hongdae’s main street hum until the small hours. Yeonnam-dong leans residential and stays calmer than the club street, and even inside Seogyo-dong the alleys off the commercial core are noticeably quieter.
A place right on the main street means you can walk home at 2 a.m. — but you’ll pay for it in noise. Tuck deeper into Seogyo-dong and you add ten minutes or so on foot in exchange for a much quieter night.

On a tight budget, Hongdae wins
Under the same conditions, Myeongdong's feed didn't surface a single guesthouse or hostel. On a backpacker budget, it makes far more sense to start with a guesthouse in Hongdae or Yeonnam.
Some “Hongdae”-Named Hotels Are Actually Far From the Action
It happens. This very feed mixes in “Hongdae” and “Mapo” names, yet several of those properties are actually nearest to Gongdeok Station. Glad Mapo connects straight to Gongdeok Station Exit 9. Shilla Stay Mapo Hongdae is two minutes on foot from Gongdeok but a 15-minute subway ride from Hongik Univ. Station. And Roynet Hotel Seoul Mapo sits three minutes from Mapo Station — a fair distance from the Hongdae scene.
That’s not to say these are bad hotels. Gongdeok is a transfer hub where Lines 5 and 6, the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, and the Airport Railroad all meet, and an airport-bus stop often sits right outside. Just know that if you book expecting a “Hongdae walking radius,” you’ll actually be catching a subway ride instead.
